Hey Matt--- just a couple things---I've had several Macks and the door jambs are the same gray color as the interior, so that truck may have been "fleet white" from new. The only other thing I didn't notice you changing are the rearend vents on top of the axle housings. That's important because they get clogged up with dirt, and when the oil gets hot and expands, it will cause seals to leak due to the pressure buildup. Not every service, but every other maybe, especially where you run in dusty conditions. Oh and I think you'll end up using that as your main horse because of the air suspension and air cab. I'm 75 and have had them all. That Autocar is gonna be cool to haul your stuff to the steam show and as a 2nd horse, but I'm pretty sure you'll get spoiled by the Mack. Just my 2 cents worth !!

Just as a helping hand from an ex Mack tech. There should be a fuel primer on the passenger side of the engine by dip stick. Also there are 2 other places to change fluid on the Mack rear ends. The side cover has a fill hole and the power divider on the front differential also has a drain and fill hole. Keep up the good work!

Thats one reason I like using Fleetgaurd filters, many come with center plugs so you can pour diesel in, and it will only run to the dirty side of the filter for quick and clean starts.

I’m a parts guy with tech experience for a Mack dealership, and have gotten to know a lot about these trucks new and old. Big Mack Trucks forum is an excellent place for information and knowledge of all kinds, especially for the classic Mack’s. This truck has an E7 ETECH, which uses 6 individual EUP (electronic unit pump) to actuate and feed fuel to the injector nozzles. It’s a neat design that bridges the gap between injection pump and unit injection pre-common rail. Tends to be pretty reliable.

Mack’s EUP has to be the most robust design out there. I worked for a construction company that had a few R models and a CH613. One of the R models had a spring broken on the eup and I just replaced the unit pump assembly and it was back on the road. E7 family of engines are top tier

Matt. Don't forget on mack rears, the toploader gearbox has its own oil reservoir separate from the pumpkin. Also on the front drive there is an oil check plug on the power divider. Great buy and nice bulldog!

Hey Matt just a little bit of advice. I'm a Eaton certified tech for a dealer. Eaton heavy duty transmissions take full synthetic 50 or 40 weight. 75-90 could potentially cause failure...I've seen it before. Also when you're changing oil in those transmissions with a PTO you should pull the shift cover on the side of the PTO. The PTO is the lowest point in this application so naturally debris could be trapped in the PTO and get in the bearings. Hope this helps keep up the good work

Agreed, it did not look like shim material to me. If it is a bearing then you might have some damage to the bearing seat as it is; Best to fix it before it eats up too much metal.

Matt, Easy-Off oven cleaner GEL in a jar with the brush in the lid is what we always used to clean the gooey stuff of the doors. Works like a charm. Doesn’t affect the paint

I worked on Mack trucks for a couple years on around the same model year. If you pre fill the filters and high idle the truck after service they will normally stay running just stumble a little bit.

But still, there should be a way to bleed the system properly. It’s simple to make a easy to bleed system and any diesel engine that doesn’t have a easy to bleed system is a bad design. In my opinion there is no gray area. Its a bad design if you cant bleed easy.

@@gregh.7977 maybe not with regular maintenance. But sometimes you do have to bleed everything and since is so cheap to design in correctly it’s a failure not to have that option. In most cases, all you need is a hole with some thread and a bloody bolt in there. Just make it the right way. It’s stupid not to.

Matt, gonna share the secret trick for doing fiberglass work, two words 'wax paper'. Tape some over either side of the area to be repaired, lay up the resin and cloth patch, then while it's still wet, place more wax paper on the opposite side and use your hands to smooth out any bubbles, and adjust the shape. This will give you a surface like gel coat, and reduce your grinding time substantially. Great buy on the Mack, really dig your channel 👍

Matt there is a method for removing decals and pinstripes off paint work. It is a rubber wheel mounted on a stud for your drill. It removes decals and doesn't harm the paint. Its available from most automotive paint supply stores. It works well. Whatever you with that truck it should be good for yourself or a new owner. The importance of servicing! I'm a car mechanic in NZ. We serviced a customers truck because it had a few problems. The owner doesn't believe in regular servicing and only get thing repaired when the truck cant be driven. This is his 10 ton early 90s Hino. The rear brakes failed a C.O.F (certificate of Fitness ) safety inspection. Balance and travel. I looked at the inspection holes in the backing plates What you should see is a step in the side of the brake shoes that show minimum lining depth. I could only see 4mm of lining and the steel of the shoes. So out with the axles and axle nuts and try to remove the wheels on the hubs. They assy wont come off. the bearing move but it still wont come off!!! Grumble, grumble!@#$@!$!@! The adjusters are seized solid and won't back off too. So wheels off the hubs and out with the grinder, drill and chisel and big hammer.. I had to dissect the brake drums to get the hubs off as the rivets for the shoes had eaten 4 mm into the drums. This job went from shoes cyls, and possible drum resurfacing to drums cyls shoes and hubs seals and lock tabs and grease + more hours. so servicing picks up problems before they double the price of a job.

I just revived a cl713 we bought new in ‘99. What I love most about them is due to the frame being designed to fit the V8, they’re super easy to work on. When changing fuel filters, pre fill your filters then on the front right hand side of the engine there should be a hand primer with a black plunger. Push it down repeatedly until it gets hard then fire it up. Saves a ton of cranking. Mack rears have 3 drain plugs and 3 fill plugs. 1 each in the front cone, fill plug in the side cover drain plug under and behind the differential housing, and drain in the bottom of the axle housing. The side cover is removable with magnets to clean. However, the side cover is aluminum and will often corrode around the o ring seal. I’ll usually apply a thin bead of silicone when reinstalling. Great truck Matt, I think you’ll really enjoy it!

Sort the A/C out on the Mack and use it as your daily, they're pretty reliable and were really popular with fleet operators when new (drivers liked them a bit more than the R model Macks as well). Shell and most of the other oil companies back in the day used CH/CL/CM Macks almost exclusively in their tanker fleets here in Australia, that should tell you something about their reliability.

Just so that you're aware those big transmissions use a special full synthetic 50 weight transmission fluid. I've seen many of them transmissions scattered on the highway because people put gear lube in them like you did. Also they'll run super hot with regular gear lube. Also gear lube is perfectly fine for your hub oil but I've found that Lucas hub oil is much much better and usually runs around 30°F cooler than gear lube.

The Mack power divider on the front diff does make a lot of fine metal due to its design. Also, there’s really no way for shim material to get inside the diff. Take the big side cover off (it’s just 4 little bolts) and check the oil catch/diverter tray magnets. FYI There are 2 bolts inside the diff (behind the big cover) that attach it to the axle housing, Just in case you want to remove the diff for rebuild.

They cost a lot, but in the oilfield service equipment biz, we use stainless steel hydraulic and air fittings exclusively, because the cost of a breakdown just isnt worth the price difference.

I'm a simple man. I see Mack CL713 on Diesel Creek, I click. These rigs are workhorses. They just go. I have a feeling the Mack is going to become the toy hauler that you use to haul all your projects home with and the Autocar is going to become the show truck that you haul your restored projects to shows with. One last thing: If you haven't already which I'm sure you did, but in case you haven't: Drain the condensation from the front air tanks. It's appalling how many people don't do that and they end up with less and less air volume in their tanks over time. Love the Mack, Matt. Good choice.

I feel the same way. It's like driving a 69 camaro restomod vs a stock 2006 camaro. Sure the 06 will ride and drive better and have better amenities all around, But you don't get the enjoyment of driving a piece of history. You could have a fully decked out 2006 seting right next to a stock jalopy 69 and the older one will almost always get the attention.

Yes, same here. I do one fuel filter at a time, pre-fill with fuel and then start and let it run a few minutes before stopping and doing the next. Cartridge fuel filters in a bowl are the worst, since there'll be a air pocket inside the lid that causes a hard start for a long time.

And this is why i fill my oil and fuel filters when i put them on, they were full when i pulled them and ran fine so why install them dry and have to deal with all that air having to get worked out

The pieces were sheared off, take off the plate and do a detailed inspection, keeping in mind as a bearing gets worn, it throws out meshing of the gears. The plug shows there is a problem, complete inspection, showing the full amount of metal in the bottom of the housing, gives indication of the extent of problem. This is preventative to avoid costly down time at a remote location. Your engaged at this moment to getting the MACK to become dependable, so now go the extra mile to achieve peace of mind.

Try any "citric" cleaner/ any limonene. It can be bought as grease remover = cheap, or the very same stuff is also sold as decal remover = expensive. Xylene is also one good solvent for decals. It just depends on what is the correct type for the glue in question. Acetone does not work because it is not solvent for the glue. Even motor oil works as solvent for some glues.

You can make life easier by filling the fuel filters before putting them on . The Mack engine has a high pressure fuel fuel system. Also on the centerfuge filter you should have a new gasket with the replacement filter. It is very important for the centerfuge filter is on tight and not sucking air . I had many of these trucks over many years. Good luck!

Matt, love the videos, so much so I went out and found a W-9 Case wheel loader in the woods, After a few hours of cutting trees and knocking down brush, I could get close enough to have a good look, The owner said it had set in the woods for around 8 years, last service date on the filters was 10 years ago. #3 cylinder was the problem child. The other five looked great. I've been trying gently to free it up. After a week and a half of soaking and bumping it back and forth, she freed up today. I'm very excited to hear it run. Matt, thanks to you, i have found the usefulness of those pig mats, because that large filter slipping has happened to me before lol. Those pig mats from my local tractor supply have saved me from having to use multiple rags, oil dry, and catches a mess before it becomes one. That rig looks good, and if it was a fleet vehicle in it's last life, they usually at least do the maintenance which so many people neglect. I look forward to the Auto car completion, but this rig looks comfy as a main work hauler. You find some good stuff at that auction. G-d bless.

The Autocar almost seems like an unnecessary expense now that you have that Mack, and the Autocar will be exceedingly more difficult to find parts for as the years go by. That probably wouldn't be a major issue, except for the fact that you plan on using it as needed to haul stuff around. The Mack seems like a better fit. I doubt you'll ever get much out of that Autocar down the road with respect to what you will have put into it. Also, you are correct and those "stakes" on the hood are definitely supposed to have rubber grommets on them that snug into the sockets on the body. I'd be surprised if you couldn't hear it clattering from side to side while you're going down to the road, and the fact that they're missing is certainly not doing any favors to those rusting out hood hinges. They're taking an even worse beating than they otherwise would because of it. My company has a whole fleet of Macks from current models and some dating clear back into the 70's. We even have a couple U models floating around. The great thing about Mack is you can find parts for trucks LONG after they've become obsolete. I was the guy tasked with ordering all the parts, so I know that from 1st hand experience. Hell, you can still order window felts for 40 year old trucks. Whatever you decide, love your content regardless.

To clean up old paint especially white, wet it down and then using a spray bottle spray it with white wall tire cleaner, make sure you keep it wet and then sponge ( or brush for the grille) and then rinse. Do one panel at a time and make sure it stays wet! It the tire cleaner dries it will leave streaks. No sense in using rubbing compound and a buffer on something that size! Also who wants all those buffer marks?

Greetings Matt, the Metalparts from the transmission plug at 31:30 should be an "Lagerkäfig" (deepl says bearing cage, dunno if its the correct term) so the part of the ballbearing witch keeps the bearing balls spaced. You should investigate further and change the damaged Bearing ASAP

I find the best solvent to remove old sticker residue is xylene (lacquer thinner). I always have a rag with water to wipe down the area immediately after because xylene can be somewhat aggressive to the paint if you don't.

GOO GONE works magic to remove sticker adhesive . Have used it for years and it never fails.The sticker /label plastic surface needs removed first to let the product work on the actual adhesive crap..

When the Autocar is finished it'll be pretty cool hauling things with it but eventually you'll end up driving the Mack more. Put the Autocar on the flatbed and haul it to shows with the Mack. Best of both worlds.

G'day matt List pump right hand front corner of engine has a mechanical list pump driven by a plastic gear if the gear comes loose on the shaft truck can still run but hard to start . There is also a hand prime priming pump screwed into the lift pump for you priming have fun reliable old units . John

Those Macks are grey inside the doors, may be original paint because the factory CL600 decals on the hood and those factory stripes. Fill the fuel filters before installing and save batteries and starter

I'm a mechanic with about 7 macks in my fleet with the same engine. I've never had to do anything more than fill the filters during a service they always start right back up . Also hand primer is on passenger side on the fuel pump

In the first half of the 1970's, I worked for a trucking company in Oregon. They hauled wood products from Washington and Oregon into California with mostly Freightliners. The owners liked Freightlineds because their first truck passed over 1 million miles in 1973, and they had never had any problems with it on the Seattle - Fairbanks route. The company had 30 - 40 trucks and a shop that was a little rough but servicable. The thing i appreciated was that all the oil and grease was pumped by air and the used oil we just drained away into underground tanks. I changed oil and filters, greased and washed many trucks in 4 years.

Being around just Mack all my life so far. There’s a lift pump on the turbo side in between your front tire and the radiator area and you pump it enough until it gets hard than rather bleeding air out from the lines and killing the batteries down and getting the starter hot. I forget what size that engine is but an E7 isn’t a bad engine. My ex boss had a granite with that same engine and was nice. I’d say the CL be the main truck and the Autocar should be your secondary since you’re putting in the time to paint and making her nice again in her life.
