On Westinghouse Phase II Fire Service key switch (car switch) doesn't have a HOLD mode. Just ON and OFF. There's also no call cancel button.

Gerard Landry independent service is basically for inspection. The elevator won't respond to calls but can still be operated from the COP by pressing your floor button and holding the door close button until the door is closed. Basically it is like fire service.

On elevators that are connected to the building's fire alarm system, bypass resets the fire condition on the fire alarm control panel. This is usually only used if a smoke detector was tripped, the elevator went into fire service, and it needed a reset. Basically, bypass just turns it off if it was activated automatically.

Interesting, I don't think that's allowed where I live. Here, the fire department doesn't reset fire alarm panels and only someone responsible for the building can reset it.

I know why the safety door sensors are disabled; the sensors know no difference between smoke or a person as they both give off IR. And if smoke comes through the door it will refuse to close which is really dangerous so it disables it to stop the risk

JJ163 I've done just under a dozen fire recall tests in my job as a fire alarm inspector and I will tell you, these buzzers are horrible in person.

I also heard the reason elevator's should not be used in fires was when they had the heat-sensitive buttons. Fires would trigger the elevator to an engulfed floor, causing the rider to become trapped (elevator always on call).

Even with regular buttons a burned wire could short and trigger the elevator to stop there. There are other hazards as well. Firstly, the fire might burn up the power cables and cause it to get stuck. Secondly, if the fire is relatively close to the elevator, moving it past the fire floor could create a draft that helps the fire spread faster from where it is.

That is true, but there are other scenarios where the benefits outweighs the risks. Many fire services respond in conjunction with ambulances in medical emergencies where there is no fire. This is helpful especially in a tall building with constantly busy elevators used by tenants and visitors.

That's why they would check the areas near the elevator doors, on each floor, before they tried to use it. Also what CoolArrived said as well.

The one on the left is "independent service" (disables communication from car to elevator control station). The other switch is "security" (most elevators do not have this switch (due to increased risk of unauthorized manipulation of the switch); that switch bypasses all floor restrictions.
