Thanks for your great advice! In particular, the critical positioning/timing of the electrical plastic housing to match up with the transmission housing keyways on the 722.6 trans on my 2006 Sprinter!! My original OEM part was leaking. A good trick I came up with was to clean/ "drain" the harness and socket was using a clean shop towel and small shop vacuum. You were right- the fluid had traveled vertically. After about 5 minutes of vacuum, moving the towel in front of harness socket, it wicked dry. Thanks again!

If you have no leaks you can simply use a fluid extractor and pump out about 1 gallon of ATF from the dipstick hole of the transmission and replace it with equal amount of fresh ATF with no hassles. Repeat it three times after driving a little in between fluid exchanges and you replaced most of the ATF fluid by dilution quickly and easily. Do it every 4 years and it will be sufficient maintenance for the life of this transmission. You can do this from the engine bay while wearing your suit :). The cost will be ~$20/gallon per fluid exchange, if you use the fully synthetic Valvoline ATF that is approved for this transmission and works fine. My 20+ year old ML is at 250K miles and the transmission runs smoothly.

The procedure is incomplete: you are not emptying the torque converter. The transmission has an opening to empty the torque converter. After you take off the protecting cap you should turn the engine until you see a screw. By taking this screw out you will empty the torque converter leaving the transmission without oil. Now you can start filling with approximately 8 liters of fresh oil.

@phishboom4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the maintenance history of the transmission. If it's never been serviced or hasn't been serviced in 50,000+ miles, it's a good idea to leave the torque convert alone initially. Then give it a drain and fill after five-ten thousand miles, and again after another ten-fifteen thousand miles(even these miles could vary, depending of the condition of the transmission - not necessarily necessary, it all depends). After that third drain and fill, the fluid is, in theory, 99.9% new fluid. If it's been serviced regularly, sure, replace the fluid in the torque converter, it's shouldn't cause a problem. Some grit and grime is needed when that's what the clutch pack has been running on( non-maintained transmissions or non-serviced transmissions) in order for it to continue to function properly.

Thankyou Sir, i do enjoy your style. I do have a question, why did you not do a full fluid change. My understanding is that the 722.6 unit takes approx 9.5 ltrs, 4-5 in the pan/filter with another 4-5 in the torque converter. Is it not pointless going through all that effort and not do the job properly 1st time round??? The only benefit i see from this procedure was 1. no chunks of metal in the pan thus showing the unit not damaged and in good health. 2. connector change as this is a known issue with this unit of transmission. 3.cleaning pan from the metal filings. You still have 4-5 ltrs of dirty fluid in the unit, so i would argue that a fluid change was not performed. Please don't take this as criticism, i thank you for your efforts in producing these videos for mugs like me.... Regards kelly

There are other videos to show a full service for the gearbox especially draining the torque converter, vital stuff. I've checked the box specification for fluid quantity, 11 quarts. Check the fluid before commencement, measure wthat is drained from the box is the absolute test, the owner/repairer does have to be responsible despite anything on a KZbin video. One other option another guy describes, an inspection plate to access a drain plug on the torque converter. That was news to me I was going to do it your way.
