Tomahawks remain useful and thrive in combat, self-defense, and bushcraft. Today we forged our very own made from a ball peen hammer.

Want to see more forging videos? Did you enjoy the testing and outtakes at the end?
@leon.benedict
@leon.benedict 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes. Nice work on the end cap and top edge filework, the only thing I would have changed was from the rope to some thin leather strips, maybe with some forged "tacks" to keep it in place? Would enjoy seeing a massive bowie, forged, and accented with some brass or one of those fancy knife scales you used in one of your knifemaking videos a while back.

@@leon.benedict thanks, thing is everyone adds leather and tacs thats why i made it this way as nearly all the other ones are just leather and it gets a bit repetitive

You probably didn't notice, but the top die on ya press is a bit loose, mate. ;) Lol, of course you noticed, every time it closes. But it's still a great job on the dies and the whole setup... great welds on it, as usual from you. And another awesome project done well. Thanks for the sweet content as always, bro.

Great video! Love the sense of humor and the way you cut it together - you got yourself a new subscriber! Also, I appreciated that you managed to show all the steps while *not* making this 35 min. long. The length was perfect. Last: YES PLEASE more forging videos! I would, however, like to see more hand work though - your tools are amazing (especially the hydraulic press used for the initial shaping), but most are far, far out of reach for most of the people probably watching this for tips/tricks.

Thanks mate, i try make them a reasonable length so people don’t get bored, i prefer the under 10min videos myself. I do as much as i can by hand but due to time restraints i do use machines however i have a basic tool series that i try get a video for each month or so.

I wondered what led to the decision to normalize, quench, and then temper this one. The handle is beautiful. One problem with my having anything with a beautiful wooden handle is that I wrap hockey tape around the handle of anything that I want to use vigorously. I just like the grip that it gives.

Well because i forged this it had to be heat treated like anything else if you get it that hot you don’t have a HT left in it
@VTPSTTU
@VTPSTTU 2 жыл бұрын
@@DiesInEveryFilm I figured that you'd need to do another quench to get the martensite back. I assumed that you did the annealing in the vermiculite in order to get a softer steel for the cutting in bringing it to the right shape. I haven't seen that many forging channels on KZbin do an air-cool. I assume that was meant as a normalizing treatment. The quench looked pretty typical. I expected that, but I haven't seen that many people do a temper for something to be used this way. It felt as if you were giving this more treatment than I usually see on this kind of work on KZbin.

Had no idea you were set up to forge metal. Now I’m totally jealous. Dude. That tomahawk was awesome! Just curious, how legal are the toys you create where you live? I use to watch Alec Steel, he once said he couldn’t carry most of his creations out of his building. Starting to get that way here in the states in some areas. I would love to see you forge more stuff. Be safe my dude.

Yeh man ive been forging since i started this channel. Tbh the laws are strange but if you have good reason to have it then you are safe unless it’s actually an illegal item. Ridiculous laws really as it doesn’t stop criminals doing what they do

@DiesInEveryFilm Customs My granny use to say locks are there to keep honest folks out. Weapon laws only disarm honest folks. What grinds my gears are the same people here in the states that say no one needs a gun are surrounded with people who carry guns to protect them. Rules for thee but not for me. End rant.👍🏻

I am terribly jealous of your forge. I wish I had one of my own. The other day I asked about a bone breaking billie club. Unfortunately it was sold. Can I send you ax blades that you forge Viking axes, Danish axes, Russian early medieval axes, francisca or other interesting axes. What ever the metal tells you what it would rather be. The material cost you nothing, it's your work I want to pay for. Now it is of course a recession, so it will have to wait. But what do you think? _Did you know that former Swedish UN soldiers were called old axes? Songs have been written about them and they themselves sing about being old axes._ _"Gammel yxor"_

I wonder what Johnny Depp would think if he saw that tomahawk. He'd probably say, "I wish I had that for the 'Lone Ranger' movie I was in back in 2013... but then again, Disney probably would not have approved of me using a tomahawk like that during production anyway."

I noticed that your Jute cord, or twine tore off while you were abusing your tomahawk, If I might make a suggestion, Look online for some artificial sinew and that stuff will make things way nicer to use and it's considerably tougher than the twine or jute you like to use in your projects, and what's really cool about artificial sinew is that it looks like the real thing so it will give a seriously cool vibe to your kickarse projects! I found a huge roll of the stuff while visiting a yard sale in the summer a few years back and it is a great way to add some old-world authenticity to your modern projects. Go on, I dare ya to take a look! I double Black DOG Dare You!!!

It came loose yes but was an easy fix, if I could find sinew that’s what id have used but this is the closest I could get and im happy with it

but why a round handle on an edged tool? That will fk up the edge alignment. Oval or rectangular with softened corners is much much better. Makes the blade stay straight on impact stoping it from turning inside your palm.
