@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much!! I did etch it. The video that I took of the process was corrupted for some reason and I wasn’t able to use it in the full video. But it was the same process that I used on the antler handle knife video if you’ve seen that one. It was a copper etch so it gave the metal a copper patina.

Excellent craftsmanship! Love the simplicity of your video while showing fine detail. I'm just getting into blacksmithing myself and I'm curious to know something I see often in axe making - the edge made of a different steel you are pretty much adding this as a forge weld because of the unknown/low carbon characteristics of the body correct? If the whole body was made of the edge you essentially wouldn't have any need to forge weld anything (albeit it would be far more expensive)?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead Жыл бұрын
Yes exactly. It’s cheaper and easier to forge mild steel but you need a hardened steel to hold the edge.

@TheHiddenHomestead

tomahawks are normally just friction fitted which is the same way I did this one.The SD card was full when I started the leather wrapping unfortunately. It’s what keeps the head held up towards the end if the wood happens to shrink.

@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
To start forging is easier then you think! Basic primitive blacksmithing can be done with a hard flat stone as an anvil and hole in the ground for the forge using charcoal. Then you make your tools. Learn while you supply yourself! 😁 and thank you very much! I appreciate you saying that. It takes a bit more time to edit this way but I enjoy the end product and glad you do as well.

Yeah you’re right. Normally tomahawks are just friction fitted so when editing the video there wasn’t much to that shot so I took it out. When shooting the leather wrap though the SD card was full and I didn’t realize it. So I didn’t get any video other then picking the leather up to start the wrap.

If the whole thing was high carbon there wouldn’t be a point to I guess. But there’s no reason to make the whole thing out of high carbon. In my opinion anyway. It’s a waste of good high carbon and it’s easier to forge mild still. As far as I know traditionally axes, hatches, tomahawks, etc have been made from mild still/iron with a higher carbon bit forge welded into it. Higher carbon was more expensive and harder to come by so it wouldn’t be wasted.

The Workshop is also too hidden on KZbin. Very cool video. I am looking forward to watching many more. edit: what's that powder you put on the piece when you forge welded the blade-material to the base-material

Well hopefully I become more visible on here some day. And thank you!😁👍 it’s borax. It’s used as a flux for forge welding.

Since I’m not a blacksmith… How do I get one or two of your tomahawks?

I could put you on my list. I have a bunch that I’m trying to finish up and if you’re interested I could add one if I get the time. Reach out to me on Facebook or Instagram. We can discuss more there.
