The key 🔑 is that symptoms are NOT always an indication that a food is intrinsically BAD for you. Oftentimes, it is an indication that you have simply lost TOLERANCE to that food. I see many people who have lost tolerance to high fiber foods, but once they address the root cause(s) *voila!* they can not only tolerate more foods, but thrive on them again. I see this all the time with FODMAPs and fiber in general. (Fwiw, I agree with the basic premise of your nutrition advice in this video- limit grains and sugar, stick with grass-fed meats, and eat your veggies and healthy fats 😘)

@@gutmicrobiomequeen Are you speaking of the gut-brain as the neurological capacity / functionality of the gut? Or the gut - brain communication? (determined by coherence or lack of, in the electrical curcuitry of the body, which in my opinion is a direct effect of s. a. d. combined with the stress of our western way of life in general )
@gutmicrobiomequeen Жыл бұрын
@@inphiknitfractal I don't think we can separate the two. Heck, I think there are more layers still- the gut-brain axis largely refers to the vagus nerve, which is part of the autonomic nervous system. The ANS also has strong ties into the HPA axis (so, what most people would call "adrenal" stuff) and stress chemistry. When I speak on the topic, I usually layer it all into a mishmosh- vagus nerve, HPA axis/adrenals, mental health, and nervous system health in general. Hope that helps (even though it may have made it more confusing LOL)

I just appreciate that culinary culture of my country is built on fermented food - cucumbers, cabbage, sour cream, kefir, yoghurt. To almost any meat we eat a salad which consists of carrots, fermented cabbage, oil (in my country mainly sunflower oil, but in my family we use olive oil) and pepper to taste. We have also what's called "kapusta zasmażana" - fermented cabbage fried with bacon, carrots, onions, allspice, oil or butter and some scoops of flour (I know these are grains, but I think others benefits outweight it). Then I went gluten free keto. 2 days in and FIRST TIME IN LIFE my poop sank!! I love Dr. Berg's insight that we are all on a "digestive spectrum". Each person individually will discover what works best for them, and for some with severe gut issues, removing plants and fiber is a great way to start the healing journey back to omnivory.

Fat and protein. Paelomedicinia out of Hungry recommends 75-80% calories from fat, remainder from protein to heal gut permeability. Their protocol is called the PKD diet (Paleo Ketogenic), which is essentially a strict Carnivore Diet without any dairy or eggs in order to remove anything that could trigger symptoms. Then once symptoms improve, people slowly reintroduce plants again one at a time to make sure nothing is a trigger.

I remember one of Dr Bergs old videos about reducing the fibre content. I found the best diet for me is grass fed beef mainly (occasional other grass fed red meat) fresh fresh cod , salmon not farmed sardines etc and time to time good quality poultry. With vegetables only being fermented or pickled so like Kimchi, Spanish pickled garlic, Italian artichokes in extra virgin oil and pickled cucumbers. Good quality eggs and hard cheese . So difficult to talk about such subjects without including a degree-course in both biology and human-evolution to counter the usual pro-vegan or SAD muddle-heads. But one point I feel would aid understanding of a human-centric-diet that we generally follow here is that cats, dogs etc have a shorter digestive tract so are less prone to illness from raw-meat borne bacteria than humans and that we have adapted to survive from many food sources because of our opposing thumbs and the processing of food by washing, peeling cooking and fermenting prior to eating it. Excellent, Dr. Berg. Yes, people need to heal their guts. So being individuals, do what is best for you personally. Anatomically, we as humans are omnivores, no doubt. Even our teeth resemble a cow's more than a canine's or feline's or alligator's. However, seeing as how we've all been deceived by the grain culture, we are sick through no real fault of our own and may have problems, due to gut damage, digesting these beautiful, healthful plants, which add so much color and diversity to our diet. Went from strict vegetarian (20 years), then vegan (10 years) to Keto, then borderline carnivore. The less plant food I ate, the better I felt. Currently I am on mostly beef/bacon/butter/fish/chicken/eggs/cheese, and I eat some almonds and/or almond butter here and there. Some avocados sometimes and probably 2 slices of tomato and/or onion. Never felt this good. Grains cause instant bloating, cauliflower causes instant constipation. I just stay away from vegetables now, except "flavour quantities", like a thin slice of onion and tomato on a burger. That said, with the diet change I got rid of 15 kg in about 3 months (exercised before and do now, every day) .... and all my knee-back-wrist joint pains went away. That with mountain biking 5 days of the week at the age of 51. It's like someone replaced all the failing cartilage in me, and it literally happened in less that 3 weeks, that pains went away. On the "normal diet" I had days when I could barely tie my shoes or pick up something from the floor ... after a longer ride I could barely get out of bed due to back pain .... All that is gone ...

Love making sauerkraut and watching it 'come alive' in the jar. The local grocery has great kimchi too but it sells out in one day. - Seems like a good sign if more people are buying up quality fermented keto foods.

I am fasting for the month of January so I have an opportunity to reset my diet again. My plan is to focus on primarily eating big organic salads with lots of ingredients once or twice a day. I don't really care about being low carb, but I want to be high protein, so nuts, seeds, hard boiled eggs, smoked salmon, steak, chicken, bacon bits etc. My goal will be to get strong working out building muscle by eating in a calorie surplus. I don't want keto because I see the glycogen in my muscles as fuel for exercise. If and when I build up fat stores again I will fast it off next January rinse and repeat each year to cycle my bodies natural fat storage system regularly.

About 2 and a half years ago I went to a clinic because I noticed a lot of abdominal bloating out of no where. It never really effected my life, but I would like for my own sake to have my thin abdomen back. No pain or discomfort, just a bit of constipation and lack of energy some days. It actually took me a few months before deciding to finally get it looked at. At the time, I was 22, 6' tall, and 150lbs (height and weight are still the same today, which hasn't changed since high school). I never really ate well, I usually eat very little and snack most of the time, drink a soda once a day, typical 20 year old stuff, right? I was told I have IBS and should change my diet to high fiber and even start taking fiber supplements to help reduce bloating and constipation, and was given a list of things to eat and what to avoid. After not even a week on that diet I found that the symptoms got way worse with more fiber in my system. I continued for about a month or 2 longer and still had the same thing. During this time period, I even stopped drinking sodas all together to really follow the guidelines and rule out every possibility that caused this issue. I then tried the total opposite, low fiber ("BRAT" diet). Again, after only a week, bloating decreased, constipation lessened, and I felt like I had more energy. This was not certainly not the solution, but it was just a test for myself to try and figure out what works for me. I tried a few other supplements, probiotics, prebiotics, cut different things out of my diet, and eventually found nothing that really made the symptoms go away. I ended up just going back to my old ways of snacking, soda, burgers, frozen pizzas, that kind of thing. As time went on, the symptoms lessened by about half, but are still there. Never found a solution, and I'm still like this 2 and a half years later, but this video was really interesting to help confirm my belief that high fiber was actually worse for me. I'll try eating more meats like steak (even though I'm aware red meat isn't the greatest, I'll take it over chicken any day of the week) and see if that helps since I used to eat more meats when I was younger and try to lessen the carbs as well. Thanks, Doc!
@experimenthealthyketo83 Жыл бұрын
Yes. He explains this also in different ways in some of his earlier videos on gut issues. He explains how red meat (grass fed & finished) is a superfood. How a nutrients rich keto carnivore diet may be most helpful in the case of gut issues.
@DannyDL1ght Жыл бұрын
The problem with consuming too much meat is that it can increase uric acid and can cause all sorts of problems and diseases,i know this is not the case for everyone but many ppl are liable. I had this problem a few years ago and i had to cut animal protein, i had pain in my joints. Another friend had to cut meat because it caused liver problems and liver problems lead to gut problems, he had 2 surgeries and cut meat for a while.I guess it all depends on the quality of meat we eat and how our bodies respond to it.

Until Dr Berg addresses systemic oxalate overload from eating a plant-centric diet, he has a major gap in service and his bias is showing. He should be aware by now. It just conflicts with his brand. Everyone needs a heads up as oxalates from many specific plant foods accumulate silently until they start causing mystery health problems ranging from Gut to joint pain to muscular pain to skin problems and more. He only covers oxalate kidney stones which is the easier to diagnose and treat by mainstream medicine bad health outcome… But we are making people sick with high oxalate “healthy” diets. Watch Sally Norton on oxalates.

Hi ,just waw I live in urban NY.Then my building there is a slaughterhouse, so they have few animal and POULTRY. I used to buy from there but as I work hard to reduce my inflammation I have been avoiding them so far because the very thing of what do they feed the animals.Then there was this video about what causes inflammation to be avoided. When I brought up milk they wrote me to argue but here in this very video is my point .I don't have digestive issues but I do get pain ,inflammation, in 2017 among other Docs on YT I found Dr berg I stayed away from the dairies as SUGGESTED, then in less than a week I could move around after 4yrs with low carb and long fast ,my inflammation receded. But yes from what the animal is fed it can give inflammation.

Dear Dr. Berg, Thank you for making this video! I am confused... I have been told about 2 different types of fiber and each seem to have a particular function in our bodies but nothing more has been explained about it. I would very much appreciate if you could kindly make a video about that and also give us some foods that are rich in one and others that are rich in the other type of fiber. Also the ratio of the two, should we consume more of one than the other? and what to look for to know which of the two we are running low on. I love your videos and always find them helpful! Wholeheartedly thank you, ! Eva

Hey Doc, been on carnivore for 4 months, felt amazing. During the holidays I started incorporating some white rice once a week or so and since then I can't get rid of the bloated stomach & constipation feeling, I eat VERY clean so kind of lost on what I would eat to feel flat again.

Just... Go back to what you were doing before the bloat?
@daniellebill7478 Жыл бұрын
Stop eating the rice lol. Go back to carnivore for 2 weeks. Then add in another carb you’d like to add in. See how you feel. Then if THAT bothers you, rinse and repeat the steps above. Carnivore is like a neutral zone to see where other foods adding in agree with your system.

@@nessaswords lol yes, obviously that's the simple change, but I'm more looking to NOT stay on 100% carnivore forever so that's why I have incorporated some plain white rice, just seeing if there was something else I'm missing pertaining to the bloating aspect, maybe gut bacteria or a non diverse gut causes this more easily.

Hi Dr Berg, I noticed that you didn't mention Kefir amongst the fermented foods you recommended taking. Would Kefir also help your gut? And speaking of fermentation, would making your own sourdough bread help with the digestion of the grains, seeing as it ferments them? One other question of great interest to me. I lived for some time in the Netherlands (I'm now back in my home country of New Zealand), and there the cows spend many months outside eating grass, but are kept inside during the winter months and are usually fed on a mixture of hay and maize silage. As this has taken the maize through a fermentation process, would that be better for the animal as well as for those of us who consume their milk or meat? Not sure whether thei maize is GMO or not. Thanks for all your great information.

@experimenthealthyketo83 Жыл бұрын
Yes, fermentation of the animals feed help in the digestion of it, he mentions this in one of his videos a few weeks/ months ago. That’s how I started to ferment the feed to my chickens and saw more eggs production despite crazy low temperatures… But of course if the feed is gmo…that will kill helpful bacteria in the guts…😢
