The difference in school requirements, salary, and roles/duties between a physical therapy assistant vs a physical therapy aide.
There is a huge difference in schooling. PTA's require at least 2 years of education/an associates degree, along with passing a licensing exam. But an aide only requires a high school diploma
Salary for PTA is about 50k and an aide is about 20k
The main difference in role differences is that a PTA is allowed to treat a patient and an aide is not. However, this may differ from state to state

I plan to practice in an outpatient setting and hopefully a SNF, (PRN) since I didn’t get the chance to have a rotation in that kind of setting.

I live in California and in the PT clinic where I'm volunteering, I see that aides give patients exercises, escort patients to there table, do laundry, clean the tables, and do file/computer work ( like checking insurance and do chartings).

Yup! thats pretty common in CA.. Its so much work for aides for such little pay. I feel clinics abuse the role of what aides could do and literally try to strain every bit of responsibility from them. They take advantage of aides and it makes me furious!! My clinic will not abuse aides, but provide a conducive environment for growth and success to get into PT school. FOR SURE.

Justin, thank you so much for posting this video! Since working as an aide, I’ve been questioning about what exactly are my responsibilities supposed to be in the state of Pennsylvania… And after seeing this video, I’m ready to move to Nebraska! I feel like my skills will be better served if I had a little bit more responsibilities, plus it would definitely help me with my PT classes as well. There’s also the fact that I tend to get bored easily if I’m not doing anything so I always try to find something to do, especially if the clinic has its slow days.

I live in California and I interned in an outpatient ortho clinic performing the duties of an aide for a month. I walked patients through their therex and applied modalities and did cleaning/laundry. At this clinic the aides didnt do any clerical work or insurance. Instead there were dedicated positions for medical insurance/front desk.

PTA's don't get enough credit imo. From personal experience (I'm a PT aide), PTA's seem very well educated in their area and play a role in manual therapy and notes for patient care and progress. That being said, a good PT aide in an outpatient setting can really help the flow for PTAs and DPTs with patient exercises and set ups to make things easier for them and the patients. It's unfortunate about hearing that PTA jobs may drop within the next few years due to the lack of knowledge insurance companies have on the roles PTA's truly have.
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 4 жыл бұрын
Alanjohn Quisido yeah I agree with you too man. PTAs are very capable of good quality care. A lot of them have a ton of experience (sometimes more than a DPT) and they are limited in their treatment simply because of their credentials. However, I do believe DPT’s have more of a knowledge base (because of schooling) to make decisions and dictate the direction of the plan of care. If a PTA feels they know more than a DPT, then they should step up their education and pursue a higher education to get a DPT. It’s important to know the scope of practice other wise things could get muddy and that’s where you get in trouble. I’m a huge fan of pt aides. They really help the clinic to run smoothly and keep things going. They make a significant difference in the clinic. But... it’s sad to say that they are too often taken advantage of. And the sad part is that most PT’s don’t even take the extra effort to educate the pt aides on the world of physical therapy. That is something I will absolutely do when I’m a PT. I think it’s super important to invest in the younger generation and help shepard them towards a better future

In order to work as a PTA, you have to have a PTA license. And to be eligible to take the licensing exam, according to FSBPT, you need "Have a degree appropriate for the exam level from a CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education) accredited institution" You can read more on it here: www.fsbpt.org/Secondary-Pages/Exam-Candidates/National-Exam-NPTE/Eligibility-Requirements

That's kind of scary that some states allow Aids to do PTA duties. I cannot find information for my state for aids yet but they are pretty strict about having licensed professional TOUCH people. I'm a licensed massage therapist that went to a CC, there were a lot of PTAs that went into the Massage Therapy program while waiting to get accepted in the PTA program. I could see an LMT doing the spot massage as they would have the appropriate license but just have somebody in the office would be a big deal. In all honesty, I wanted to be a PT but realized that was too much school for being a career change that late in life - this was prior to it become a PhD program. My BS is in computer science so I had a bunch of sciences prereqs, fell into massage therapy by accident. Considering PTA program now...
