Thank you, Brian. The tackle industry has really expanded the definition of "Ned rig" in my opinion, but I think of it as the rig Ned Kehde himself talked about in his video on the subject: A light (under 1/8 oz was what I think he said) jighead and a small 3-inch-ish or less plain plastic. Anything else might catch fish, but it's not a Ned rig in my opinion - no matter what is written on the bag. In broad terms, I think that a shakey head is designed to be fished weedless, a Ned is not. Thanks again!

@Larry77777 Жыл бұрын
@@BrianLatimerFishing Picking up on your reply to LSHD, Something I struggle with is swim jig trailers. I don't see how they can simultaneously look like a craw AND a minnow. To me it should mimic either/or, not both at the same time. The fishing industry is confusingly making paddletail swimbaits with craw imitating colours and craws with minnow colours. It would be a whole lot simpler to keep them separate.

Been rigging a torn in half Senko with a rig I’ve been calling the San Marcos rig. Some call it a modified Ned but it’s weightless with an EWG so it doesn’t stand straight up. It falls like wacky but then I can fish it more like a swim bait. Been highly effective on the river I fish.. usually catch 15+ fish every time I go out.

Interesting. There's a bait out there that's gaining traction, I think it's called a 'scat' bait, but it basically looks like a short turd with no action; it catches fish. Just reminded me of this/sounds similar. Going to try this Senko cut in half method next time I go out

Not going to lie. I use some regular old cheap leadheads for shakeyheads. I prefer a 90 degree bend over a 60 at the line tie. Not a fan of the z-man material. They are indestructible except never stay separated in the package and weld together easily. A trd glob isn’t nearly as effective. Lol I do like the Ned heads and the different size hooks available though. I use them with everything from senkos to LC helgies and even use ones with a weed guard with hula grubs for smallmouth.

Try a bobber stop, a bullet weight and an offset hook (size 1) with a TRD. Makes it weedless and will come through the hang ups easily. Now, it wont stand up at straight as a Ned rigged TRD does. For that, get Z Mans Nedlocks EWG hook.

Try a ZMan 1/10 ounce head. Some guys swear by the 1/16 ounce but, you'll need dead calm wind and a very light line for that one. I find 1/10 ounce to be universal for the Ned/TRD.
@dtoux3 ай бұрын
If you put trd on shaky head… will it turn it into a ned rig? 🙂 …the only difference i see is floating softbait vs longer and non-floating worm… I personally use whatever heads I have with z-mans plastics and it makes no difference in presentation… in fact, I recently switched to using a standard hooks with “cheburashka” weights to carry less tackle 😉

The elephant in the room is the swim jig. A shakey head is a like Ned rig, that wants to become a swig jig. With micro swim jigs and things skrinking in scale from the other end (the three quarter ounce C-rig, became three quarter ounce jig, the jig became a smaller jig, then it became a swim jig, and now it's a micro jig), it becomes harder to know what is what. There is 'the ball and chain' on one extreme, and the Ned rig on the other. And plenty in between both of those. The grandfather of everything was probably a few rusty nuts and bolts tied to a line. With a hook and bait coming off of it. Before people got to have custom-made, sleek, well-designed Carolina rigs (rather than engine parts).
@seizedcarcass8440 Жыл бұрын
Zman has a new finesse swim jig that has a lighter wire hook. Honestly it’s the Ned rig alternative to a swim jig. I highly recommend them.
@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
@@seizedcarcass8440 What I always appreciated about the saltwater focused tackle companies (or ones that make things, that work in either environment like the Zman stuff). It's tough and durable, which carries slightly more of a premium in harsh saltwater conditions. For that kind of customer. Saltwater anglers like pre-rigged, pre-made soft plastic baits too. So when you are out there, you are already rigged in terms of plastics, glue, hooks, baits, everything. Again, in freshwater the customer behaves a bit different. Their 'stuff' doesn't rust and degrade at the same rapid rates. People in freshwater like myself, can get more years out of baits and tackle. One doesn't have to protect stuff as much in freshwater. If you 'dry out' you're tackle box compartments regularly. You'll get away with a lot. In saltwater, the anglers like to carry a smaller 'inventory' of new stuff. And they will leave their stuff in factory sealed bubble packs etc. Until it's ready to tie on the line. For all of these reason. Pre-rigged soft plastics makes no sense to freshwater anglers, but it often does to saltwater.
@seizedcarcass8440 Жыл бұрын
@@academicmailbox7798 this wouldn’t help salt but you can put silica packets in tackle boxes to help the moisture issues. Zman does make really high quality stuff though.
@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
A couple of those swim jig 'Ned rig' (don't try to say that three times and fast), alternatives. I could imagine for the casual angler. Who only wants to throw out a line for a couple of hours from a saltwater dock. And catch some fish. On lightweight tackle. There's so little to worry about there (if one is not super focused full-time on fishing). It's a great option. I didn't know that existed even. A pre-made Neg rig, swim jig lure. For one type of customer it seems silly. For other anglers it could be a great way to learn about finesse type fishing. By being able just to get a sample type of item. From the retail supply chain.
@seizedcarcass8440 Жыл бұрын
@@academicmailbox7798 Zman should make a sample pack if Ned baits but for a smaller price. They have the $20 kit but I think the price is unappealing to most anglers.
