Great video. Great commentary. Goes to reinforce the fact that the pros are more consistent than amateurs and have a wider array of shots than the rest of us. I was watching a video of Bubba Watson putting on a clinic. At one point he’s got his driver out and he is asking people to call the shot they want to see....at the top of his backswing. So he’s at the top and someone yells “high cut” and he rips a high cut. Next swing, “low draw” and he does it. The awareness of their swing mechanics and the ability to control it to shape shots on demand makes a huge difference in the game. Also, their distance and control off the tee. Hitting wedges from the fairway into the majority of greens can result in good scoring opportunities. Which brings us to the last point, the short game. Pros have a short game that is just insane. The repertoire of shots they all possess from inside 100 yards is just nuts. But also, as Matt noted, the pros do this for a living. They have access to facilities, coaches, equipment, etc, that weekend warriors can’t even imagine, and they use all of that all the time. If weekend warriors could hit 500+ shots a day with a launch monitor that told them everything about each shot, then played 18 holes, then worked out, and hit the chipping and putting green, we’d all be a lot better. But to get there, you have to play at or near the pro level.

Something about golf disconnects the reasoning centers of the brain and makes golfers think they can consistently pull off shots they've never practiced, even routine or easy shots. Your channel has been helping me reconnect the rational part of my brain when I golf, so I can accept that I shouldn't always be "going for it", and more importantly, accept that the results, good or bad, are mostly the product of how much I've practiced or not. Hey Matt, I really enjoy your videos. I struggled with the driver for many years. I've been enjoying recent success with it. Here are a few keys. First, when you get to the top of your backswing, just have a slight pause. Second, when coming down simply imagine that you are throwing a ball side arm...let your right hand be the main feel. Strangely, this will keep you behind the ball where you need to be. Finally, release that throw fully towards the target with a full follow through including a release of the hands. If you don't follow through, you're gonna snap hook it. As you practice, you may find that you're killing it but the direction may be slightly off. Solve this by adjusting your ball position either more in front or further back. This simple move, throwing a ball sidearm...like skipping a stone, is something everybody can do. The driver should be the easiest club in your bag to manage.

I can tell your body swing was different today, like you were swinging across, but you managed to play well under the circumstances and was the bad chip ,wrong club etc that hurt your score. As a 1 HC I can tell you, that yes , you need to fall in love with your driver but use it when it make sense . Try to find a Driver that is more forgiving for you, do a fitting with a pro and launch monitor to find out. And you are right, we recreational players save strokes by avoiding errors ,which usually come from bad decisions (course management ). Great video brother,like always. Thanks for sharing.

There is only one kind of real low handicapper and its an enlightened one. This is one of the things no one talks about. Genuine low handicappers below 3 handicap, talk a certain way. There's very little malice in the way a genuine "in real life" low-handicap talks - very little disbelief regarding someone's handicap, but an understanding of playing partners and how they are playing and potential of that playing partner. The internet pros and internet low handicappers are the worst. It's very rare to get a comment like yours but if anyone reads this guy's comment, this is how low handicappers talk. Thanks for the comment

I think "slipping further into self-loathing" sums up the golf experience for many people. Despite being a 17 hcp and having the kind of misses that are a danger to wildlife and adjacent housing, I have worked on the ability to reset, mentally. Hi Matt nice video as always, great play by both of you. Comment at 16:20 I can totally agree with. This is pretty much exactly where I'm at right now, and I find the tee shot to be the "key" to most holes for me. While I am aiming to shoot under par, and often like to get the ball as far down the fairway (!) as possible, if it isn't quite working then I have to sometimes step back and remember this: I don't have to bomb the driver 300+, but I DO need to make solid contact and have a reasonable ball flight with whatever club I select, to get confidence up and execute the second shot to the best of my ability. Sounds a bit like the GolfSidekick philosophy... I wonder where I got it from... ;-)

I threw out my driver after my round yesterday. It's my most inconsistent club by far. Even on the 1/10 chance I hit it "well", it's still only about 220 yards. I have one of those "The Perfect Club" in 24 degree that I easily hit 200 yards and straight 90% of the time. It's not as flashy as a driver, but my drives are usually worm-burners for 75 yards max. I never played well (100-100 on a par 72 course...shot a 90 ONCE) and I didn't play for 13 years after my dad died in 2007. I played my first round back with no range time and shot a 94 with your suggestions about course management, not trying to hit "hero" shots, and playing the clubs I do hit pretty well. First round back in almost 14 years and I break 100 with ease. I would have been damn close to breaking 90 if I had not tried several times to hit my driver, knowing full well I couldn't hit it reliably. I took your advice in other videos and played to have fun. I took 3 seconds to curse bad shots, then looked forward to hitting the next good one. I intentionally tried to play to my strengths and away from my weaknesses. Thanks for your videos, Matt.

The 3 biggest things i get out of your videos comparing different level players. 1. Play shots your comfortable with, I especially need a hybrid or lofted wood that i can hit in the 200 range. That’s a great display of the difference, even though you can beat a pro or be equal on some holes. I have the capability of making easy par or birdie on every hole but half the time I don’t, mostly because of accuracy with the driver. And because I can mess up even easy shots from 100 yards in the rough or fairway. It’s always about consistency
@bobrella47404 жыл бұрын
I noticed in your recap that you didn’t mention the 3-4 putts that burned the hole and didn’t drop. My recap would have been more along the lines of if those putts just dropped, see how much better my score would have been. In reality, if the short game is better, those putts would’ve been shorter and more of a realistic chance to make. That thinking is the difference between a low handicapper wanting to improve and a high handicapper like me!

Well that's the thing. Hole two, I hit 4 iron 9 iron for bird, and Mo hits 3 wood punch, up n down for par. Now in the grand scheme of things, we play 10 rounds there, he may be slightly lower than me in score doing the same strategy we each used over and over. But for the FIRST time we play a course and perhaps the only time we get to play it, do we want to enjoy it and not lose our shit, trying to "experience" the course? Or play to what we can see and leave us hungry for more for the next time

Well im a scratch golfer making and error once in a while and I can play myself out of just about any situation. I work full time but was able to go from 98 to sub 70's in about a year of driving range and lots of study. Now after 20 years of play and lots of practice I have narrowed down the perfect gold swing to 4 fundamentals.

Same score Hole 5: Tied in par Hole 6: Low confidence in driver, pain in body, weak effort. Poor bunker shot, 3 shot swing in one hole. That was the real difference. I 3 putted last year three times I think and have a great short game, but only hit my 7 iron 150, but am really good from 130 in, usually inside 25 feet. I play with an ex PGA tour winner who is over 50 and the big difference is driver, he's 60 yards longer, and his long game is much better than mine, and his bunker play is significantly better; those are the main differences I find in all plus golfers over myself, even young scratch players.

I'm a 3 handicap and I'll tell you - 30-50 yards off the tee with the same club, and 5 less putts a round. I can hit clubs the same distance as a pro, but I can't make the same athletic swing on the ball, generate the clubhead speed, and still have the same accuracy. And I don't have the patience to line up and read every putt, or practice enough to drop down to a 25-30 putts a round average. Nor do I play on greens straight enough, nor have playing partners willing to let me take that long.
@GolfSidekick4 жыл бұрын
100% absolutely. I am a quick player in general. But when I add the camera, I have to be even quicker. Then I was running between shots to record all the other players, yep all 3 others. And so things are hyper sped up. If I had the time, with no camera and playing with peopl who are okay to jam a 5 hour round, with no one behind me, I would shoot lower scores. I would line that little line up on the greens, commit to better-visualized shots, get comofrtable on the tee shots with driver more often. But it's that extra 30 seconds per shot that I need t use for myself, not filming! When I am not running around, and I don't film, it is a much better result for sure

Agreed but I will say after being a walking scorer at a WGC event the last 4 years, Pro's don't dilly dally their rounds are quicker than some of mine at a municipal. The day I watched Henrik Stenson hit an iron while I was about 20ft away.... That sound... I knew he was on an entirely different planet than me. Maybe even galaxy.

Yeah so Mo was explaining to me how he doesn't have the shots that the PGA tour guys do. The guys who come from Asian tour after a good season and go to the PGA Tour come back and they're like NAH DUDE THOSE AMERICAN GUYS ARE ON ANOTHER PLANET. The shots where you need to draw one into a back left pin off a fade lie onto a green sloping into the water. Mo was saying that is an example of a shot he doesn't have yet and people like the top 200 in the world can just jam one in 6 feet

John Daly once said the biggest difference between weekend warriors and the pros was that the pros all had phenomenal short games. I agree with that, but with the caveat that all the pros can ALSO hit their driver 280-300 yards AND keep it in play at the same time :)
@Golfzilla704 жыл бұрын
@@megabonnar keeping it in play and hitting the fairway are two different things --- they're good enough to bomb it, and not care if it's in the fairway or not -- as long as they can put a club on the ball and they've got a pathway to hit through, they're fine not hitting fairways. I believe it's one of the problems with today's game. I absolutely love seeing these guys bomb the ball, but at the same time i DON'T like seeing them bomb it, miss the target, and it makes no difference. Accuracy off the tee doesn't mean what it used to, but that's just my humble opinion.

"If you drop bombs, then back it up. Your gameplay MUST match your strengths." This spoke to me on so many levels. I play off 6 and hit 300 yard drives and can chip like a BAUS, but my approach game is shocking inside 120. I am almost ALWAYS inside 120 if I pipe a Driver somewhere and NOTHING is more frustrating than being 60 yards closer to the hole than your buddy and missing the green.
@GolfSidekick4 жыл бұрын
100% - so at the range, hit 10 drivers, 90 shots inside 120 - groove that shit. Then hit the pitching area and practice those 30-70 yarders. You should be off scratch. But you can see there is a fine line. Is it GAINING strokes? Or is it stopping those silly errors?
@jpecora24 жыл бұрын
@@GolfSidekick it's so true Matt! I think part of my problem, and something they never tell you with "strokes gained," is that the temptation to fire at the pin only INCREASES the closer you get to the hole. So if I'm 140 out, I may just aim middle and be safe, but if I'm 75 yards away, I'm thinking "get it close" and often bring trouble into play with bunkers or short sides. Plus I almost feel there's MORE pressure to convert when I've hit a great drive and am sitting pretty in the fairway. Gotta just grind on inside 70-120 yard shots and just get comfortable with all my wedges hitting full. Such a great video. Killiing the quarantine content game!

@@jpecora2That's where I am right now, you see? I am not PROGRESSING becauseI con comfortably play off a 5 handicap just jamming 2 irons all day. But the knock on effect is where the strategy and practice really comes in. With 2 iron off every tee, I gotta be strong with 4-7 iron approaches. And have a great short game because I miss greens more often. But if I want to GAIN strokes, I need to get the driver going like I did while I was in Malaysia for a while last year. But then I need to shift focus to other approach clubs. It's great beacue I have the 4-7 iron licked. But now to focus on inside 160 cos that's where most approaches will be from. And particularly 140 and in which is my PW, 50, 54, 58. The whole strategy takes a shift to longer tee ball, shorter approaches. BETTER LAG PUTTING and better proximity to the hole for more putts dropping. This is what I think can bring me to scratch again because when I was scratch, I hit my driver more accurately than my 8 iron. I always used to say it when I was scratch too. It will come but it needs to be undrstood which shots are needed and the mindset shift that needs to happen
@jpecora24 жыл бұрын
@@GolfSidekick 100% Boss Man. That's where the pressure comes in for me. Because I'm so close to the green on many approaches, I put too much pressure on myself to hit it close because my putting isn't great and anything outside 5 feet is a likely miss, so it filters up the rest of the bag. You've said it so many times, you have to work from the green backwards. Even in my best rounds (close to level par), I usually have 28-30 putts, which is crazy when you think about it.

Sometimes man, but I have to leave the ego in the lockers. If I go out there and try KEEP UP with them, I will fail. But I guess with Mo, I am comfortable so we can jam. It does put into perspective what you need to work on and everyone who wants to get better should be playing with people whose handicap is 5 shots lower than theirs at all times.

That is the thing I've been struggling with lately. I shot a +14 a couple weeks ago with 4 triples. So I was +12 on 4 holes and +2 on the other 14. Tough scene.

Yeah is pretty simple. reduce stupid errors, get the most out of your equipment, work on your golf fitness, practice (productively!!) as much as you can and then play as much as you can!!!! Is what I love about golf, challenging myself everyday to improve and become the best golfer I can be. It seems I learn something new about my golf game/swing/stroke every few rounds. Is not the destination, its the journey that's so much fun. Cheers from Chambers Bay!!!
