Originally written in 1867, Differences was one of the first post-Civil War novels by a Jewish author. Written by Dr. Nathan Mayer, a Union soldier who served as a battlefield surgeon and fought at Antietam, the book has been recently edited and republished by Professor Steven Bowman. Explore the world of Dr. Mayer and what his book reveals about contemporary Jewish life in the South through this conversation between Bowman and MSJE Executive Director Kenneth Hoffman.
