Thank you for posting this video it was great to know some of the differences. All my life I wanted to be Amish the slower paced peaceful life. One that people help each other and life is pure instead I stayed in this world so busy sometimes I forget to take a sip of water. God Bless those folks that have keep Gods word and purity.

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit! There is a wide range of Mennonites here in the Penn Yan area, from Horse and Buggy "old order" Mennonites to quite modern. Years ago, I posted a picture of Mennonite buggies, and someone commented that only the Amish use buggies, not the Mennonites. I knew better, but did some research. Several sources say that the Amish is actually a sect of Mennonites, so all Amish are Mennonites, but only some Mennonites are Amish. It is as confusing as being "Baptist" - there are so many different different "breeds" of us Baptists - as different as night and day!

Branchporter: Thanks for chiming in, in a positive way. Now I wish to help you. NOT all Amish are Mennonites. Originally, in the 1500s they all started out as Mennonites. But that changed before long, as some church leaders thought the Mennonite programme wasn't all it could be. So Jakob Amann (sp?) withdrew some of his people to follow a more conservative programme. These became known as Amish. They still fell under the Anabaptist umbrella, but they were not Mennonites. In recent generations, as man tries to form a more perfect church, some people who left the Amish church have sought fellowship with people who split the difference between these two churches. The resulting bodies may be called AMISH-MENNONITE, or something similar. One well established mixed church are called Beachy Amish Mennonite church. Other divisions arose too, bringing us German Baptists, River Brethren, and many others. The question of plainness is quite interesting. But the most important thing is living the way God wants us to live, according to the Bible. When we each go before God in the end, He will not ask if we wore a beard, suspenders, a head covering or a cape dress. (These things are an attempt to draw away from the world in an effort to live properly). He will instead be interested in our lives down here, and how we treated our fellow man. And did we ever repent and become a Christian. And you can do that in any church, or no church, or out in the wilderness. Turn to God's Son Jesus. Ask Him how you should proceed. Prayer and Bible reading will give many answers.

I grew up around Old Order Mennonites, my grandparents lived right in the middle of a small settlement here in Michigan near Carson City. That community has grown a LOT since I was a child. When my grandma passed away my grandpa decided to sell the house & land for something smaller and it ended up being purchased by the O.O.M. keeping it from being split up like most farms do. Makes me happy to go by and see a horse & buggy there in the driveway.

Interesting. The Mennonites here in Eastern Ontario Canada consist of the horse and buggy kind and the more mainstream group who drive cars. Our horse & buggy group does have some bearded men. I love the fact they've moved into our area and are farming the land with horses and sheer hard work, not like most of today's crop farmers who do just about everything from a tractor seat-- an air-conditioned, radio, power steering tractor with large comfy cabs to protect them from the elements. I grew up on a small farm where we did a lot by hand and with simple tractors. Very hard work but it strengthened our character and our bodies. Nobody needed a gym, that's for sure. Great place for kids to grow up.

From my contact with the Amish here in North Carolina, a lot of the rules are set by the local groups so that each group is a little different. I grew up in the Church of the Brethren in Ohio, which is an offshoot of the Mennonites, but is also a departure from the Mennonites in the separation of the community from society that the Anabaptists typically practice. We had Mennonites who came to church with us then. The Amish community here in North Carolina where I live now are plain-clothed. They do have electricity in their homes, but no phones are cars. They use buggies for personal transportation and mechanical farm equipment for their fields. So there is some modernization. They also have a church that serves as their school. Men sit on one side and women on the other. Families will also meet informally to visit or study the Bible and most keep large sitting rooms for this purpose.

Our horse and buggy mennonite neighbors in southern Ohio, do not have electricity or public water. They do have rubber tires on their tractors and do allow bicycles. The Amish where I live have tracks tractors and steel wagon wheels for their sawmills. But they don't allow bikes, they use scooters. But both use rubber tired skid steers (which they sometimes use to travel loaded up with the family) Interesting to see the differences across the country!

I grew up in an Amish and Mennonite community. Being curious I asked the same question. Basically it was a politics and identity thing. The degree to which liberties and what rules there were were dependent on the individual communities (congregation/church) So there are some groups that are very strict and some Mennonites that are very modern in style. I remember selling a car to a Mennonite. The vehicle was to be painted plain black, the hub caps removed, the radio removed. A couple of years later I sold another car to the same family, the rules had changed and they were allowed to have their vehicles colored and a radio. However they were not to have wheel hubs. The best way for me to tell if some one was Amish or Old order Mennonite was where they went to church. Amish tended to worship at the various farms. Mennonites would go to the meeting house. Also I found that though any one was welcome to worship with either group the Mennonites seemed more welcoming of those not baptized then the Amish. The Amish seemed to be very protective of their ways to some outsiders. But both groups were great. And I have some great friends from both groups. Just wish though that some would get on to Facebook. But well the Elders have to make that choice and I don't see that happening so old fashion letter writing will have to do in order to keep in touch.

Here's something I wrote for another channel. Perhaps it will help here. If I may I would like to make a suggestion, then add an information contribution. If this all turns out to be something other than you want, then you are welcome to delete it. •Please put special words in titles on the screen. Much of what you and I have to say, includes new vocabulary for people. The first one is ANABAPTIST. This is so it doesn't sound like anti-baptist, or other misunderstandings. •Anabaptist means re-baptizers. In the beginning, children who had been baptized as babies, were baptized again upon confession of faith, as an adult. (After leaving the Catholic or other big formal church.) Hence "re-baptizers" aka, Anabaptist. Nowadays, all of them are teens or older. I go to a conservative Mennonite church. Some of our preferences are: simple or "plain" clothing. •We like clothes in muted, solid colors. The "cape dress" our women wear is unusual -- the feeling being that it hides the woman's figure. We are to be modestly attired. Short sleeves are usually OK. •Our ladies cover their heads as in the New Testament. Actually this is only required in spiritual situations, but most do it all day. •When not in church, colorful running shoes (or the like) are worn. •Men too must dress simply, plainly. We wear suspenders and no belts. My wristwatch has a plain black wristband. My hat is something simple and not fashionable. For work out in the sun, a straw hat is OK. My Sunday coat has no lapels, just a straight edge. We don 't wear neck ties. •On church days, my shoes are simple black dress shoes, polished. Otherwise I personally always wear work boots. •Our trousers are simple, no rivets, no visible labels, plain dark colors, without a pattern. (No camo, for example.) Bib overalls are on the good list. •Our shirts are ordinary button up shirts, in solid, white or muted colors. •We have cars, trucks, cell phones, telephones, hearing aids, electricity, motorized farm and other equipment (from tractors to chain saws) etc. Computer use is de-emphasized, electronic entertainment is not used. •Our children usually go to our own Mennonite schools, grades 1 to 8. •Everyone in the family helps out, whether we have a farm, a shop, a bakery, etc. We learn trades and skills while we are young. •The Bible is our "Rule for Faith and Practice." We are ordinary born-again Christians. •We are non-conformist with the world, and pacifist. We will use a gun to hunt for food, but not to harm anyone. •We strive to be courteous, helpful, good citizens and good neighbors in every way. Last, for now, we are not interested in the ways of the world. We are quite content living apart from the world. We have NO secrets, NO restrictions. Anyone is welcome to join us; there is no pressure. We will teach you about a biblical lifestyle that pleases the Lord, and brings peace.

@@lovingatlanta Amish and Mennonites people are descendants of the protestant groups that originated in Europe and emigrated to America centuries ago. My understanding, they are obsessed with the idea to preserve and defend their believes and way of life. And unlike other protestant or catholic groups they do NOT practice promoting their religion to outsiders. They have high birth rate, so there is no need to search for more people.

Amish are all over the place between the Finger Lakes I live in Auburn, NY. They are all over around the Finger Lakes region and way up and around Fulton / Oswego and up into Watertown, New Philadelphia, New York. Mennonite farms are everywhere. A friend of mine could probably give a better insight on how the dairy farms operate as he dose a lot of farm pick ups for Milk trailers going to the dairy in Auburn, NY among other dairies in Eastern New York. Another point of interest is a place called the Wind Mill in Penn Yann, NY it's a mix of craft stores where Amish goods can be bought on Sundays from Sprint to early fall. Another place is also located on Rt 318 in Waterloo, NY as well. Mennonites have a big grocery store in Seneca, Falls NY at the junction where Route 318 joins into RT5 and RT89.

Mennonites invented by Menno Simmons (Frysk, correct name is Minne Simens) Amish invented by Jacob Amman (Swiss) Mennonites have been chased by catholics and protestants (who did fight each other too) becaurse fighting, even if self defense, is not part of their religion. That'show religion should be! After a while Amman didn't like the Mennonite tradition that was not strict enough and founded his own 'splinter group', the Amish. They moved to 'the new world' (Pennsylvania) round 17andsomething. Religion wise, more or less the same. Amish are Mennonites are Baptists are Protestants ... Tradition wise: Thank God some people kept our old traditions in a forever changing world!!! But there's no more Amish in Europe. Unfortunately. One can learn a lot, like farming with respect for the earth instead of chemical farming.

The Mennonites in Lawrence County Tn. dress as you describe the Amish do. And only unmarried men go unshaven. A few Mennonites in Lawrence County Tn. May drive black pickups but most don't. The vast majority will travel in buggies or wagons. I have seen a few wagons with pneumatic tires. For long distance the take the Greyhound. They also don't have electricity or phones in there homes. But will happily come to your house and use your phone. The one caveat to this comment is that I haven't lived in Lawrence Co. Tennessee for almost 40 years so this information may be out of date.

Always bothers me how non violent people get bullied by so called regular people. Sad. Just different beliefs and culture, it's not like they go around blowing up places. The only thing that bothers the Scots in me is when they call me English. :)

To the fellow who asked may anyone join a Mennonite church, YES! ANYone who is interested is welcome. Some of our churches near cities have several races represented. Race is not a question with God. He is father of us all. As I said, we have no secrets. There have been churches with racial restrictions and secrets. That was not us.

You should at least mention which church you belong to, so that people interested in joining could be directed towards it. Obviously, it is untrue that all Mennonites are the same. Mennonite Church USA for example is open to everyone, but it would be untrue to say that that is the case with the more stricter conservative branches. Some of the branches I've seen in Bolivia and Pennsylvania don't seek converts and are growing rapidly, while others (like Mennonite Church USA) are shrinking despite actively proselytizing. It's an interesting thing, that closed churches with roots and culture are growing, but those open to everyone aren't. Seems God blesses those churches who keep to themselves.

@@Volleyball_Chess_and_Geoguessr Well I AM on a second marriage. My first wife died quite young. I have not seen or heard of any problem if someone who was divorced came to the Mennonites. Have you? If you are uncertain, then go and ask them. You never really know until you find out first hand. For me these folks have been the answer to many things. With them I have experienced growth, received comfort and found folks I could believe and rely on completely. The variety of Mennonite I know, teaches and lives out of the Bible. And that really seems to be God's intent. And I have found them to be entirely non judgmental. Let us know how it goes. But no beer stories. Be as truthful as you want them to be.

It's just Christianity. I believe all their doctrines are biblical. I think the definition of a cult is doctrines with the intention to lead people astray. I think the Catholic church is a cult under my definition. The mennonites I know have biblical doctrines.
