that new style carriage with the disk brakes, air ride, and improved wheels is light years ahead of many of the buggies I see out here on the road where I live. I was just wondering about the "state of the art", now I know. Thanks! There are probably many improvements they could still make with the buggies--especially with regard to safety in crashes. That said, I think their overall approach to skepticism of adopting new technology is pretty wise.

Ive got an idea also, im not sure how well it will go down with the Amish in regards to electricity use but i was thinking about their buggy's and the lighting system they use. Ive heard they use 12volt systems just like in a car and there's a big chance for the battery to run out so for keeping the battery charged how about using a car's alternater belt driven off one of the wheels which in turn will run back into the battery to keep it topped up. The system would more than likely need a couple of extra pulleys to speed up the turning rate of the alternator to keep it at optimum speed but it should be simple enough to do.

🧒🏼If you look at the first automobiles, they look very similar to these buggies. Also, those old Stagecoaches. It looks like their ancestors are the original auto makers, but Dimeter Mercedes, Dodge Bros, Henry Ford used their design, but added an engine and built them on a mass scale. If you install a gasoline engine on the front of one of these buggies, it will be identical to what Jay Leno has in his stable.

I'm sure there are more car related deaths than Amish Buggy accidents. Considering they stay on country roads and in spacious areas it would make sense that anyone in that immediate area would expect to see them around and drive accordingly. Amish have a way of life worth maintaining and adhering to no matter the consequence. Cars are on their way to becoming obsolete and self driving. Horse and buggy will still be trotting along.

Cordiali saluti, Paul Candiago (candiago.p@bmts.com)
