If the wyvern and dragon end up fighting its actually a 50/50 chance either side, let me explain, the dragon, D, and wyvern, W, are each good in things the other is a little worse at, such as the dragon on ground and wyvern in air, but each has the same traits which balances it such as their back legs, if they were to fight the wyvern would already be in the air as the dragon will try to attack it by breathing fire or chasing it in the air, the choice matters, if it breaths fire the wyvern would easily dodge it and come back with acid and while the dragon gets the acid on it, the acid would likely get in the dragons eyes or mouth therefore staggering it, once the dragon does this the wyvern would swoop it and take the kill, on the other hand if the dragon chases it the wyvern would try to shake it off or spit acid, the choice doesn’t matter, if the wyvern spits acid the dragon will dodge and if it tries to get rid of D, D will stay on track and breath fire or grab the tail of the wyvern bringing it down onto the floor and finishing it off. imagine that scenario

While I do agree with the anatomical differences (tv and streaming service shows need to know how to categorize because most “dragons” are really wyverns) not all dragons or wyverns are guaranteed to breathe fire or spit acid, as there are many many different types throughout the world and fiction. Along with the fact that not all wyverns have poisonous spikes along their backs and tails. That can also change. But this is great! Both species have their strengths and would be quite evenly matched in a fight.

Wyverns are used in both Skyrim and Game of Thrones. Seems like a very popular design. There's far more to dragon variants than just wyverns, though. There are amphipteres, lindwyrms, basilisks, drakes, hydras, eastern dragons, wyrms, and so much more!

I disagree, if they were merely types of dragons, then your four legged dragon wouldn't be simply known as 'dragon', whilst others have their own designation. The Game of Thrones universe is the only fictional work I've seen that actually calls wyverns/drakes (the difference between drakes and wyverns is debatable) dragons. As for eastern dragons, they are of a more spiritual nature than that of a physical creature, with rather obvious relation to serpents, and have various (depending on the language) names for them other than "dragon," it's just that "dragon" is the commonly designated English word for a fire-breathing reptile that flys. So they get looped into being called that by English speakers despite their differences.

In medieval text dragons weren’t distinguished by the amount of legs they gave- they were distinguished by whether they could breathe fire (a dragon) or they were poisonous/venomous (wyverns). Wyverns pretty much always were two legged with two wings but dragons varied in design a lot ranging from no legs to six legs, no wings to three pairs, etc.

Thats the point of the Drake's huge size and power but since its huge it cant turn fst enough for the wyvern after all its faster than the drake itself and wyverns are more intelligent all it could do is spot an opening and fire acide to its eyes or to its back the drake's scales would melt right off unless its scales are resistant to poison but there might be atages to wyverns where its acid can be stronger but yes wyverns would win hands down not saying a wyvern would go unscathed though

Depends on the context. If dragons are wise they can use superior tactics against wyverns. If dragons are more bestial, then wyverns may get an upper hand with speed and venom. If dragons are more pet-like and friendly, neither wins because a human would sort this out eventually

Hot take, both can be dragons. "dragon" is an umbrella term, and a dragon doesn't have to have four legs and two wings. A dragon is what you label it. In Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, they're all dragons. Some may say they're wyverns, but it doesn't really matter what they say, it matters what their creator, George RR Martin says. If to him they're dragons, they're dragons. It's that simple.

Actually, this is more modern on what's a wyvern Vs what's a dragon. Wyvern is a 4 limb creature that is specifically poisonous or Venomous. Dragon is any limb creature (usually 4 or 6) that has any element related thing (usually fire or ice.)

In fictional term and not (Real world) mythological, i always figured, while they are both Dragons that Wyverns are lesser dragon, as in they don't have magic or very little magic, they have 2 legs and are pretty mutch beasts. While Dragons, the 4 legged ones are pretty much pure magic, can shape-shift and are very intelligent.

The extra elements to the wyvern are a nice detail that feel like they came out of an older fable, but by far more so than the issue of wings, dragons of all forms have such a diverse fixture of elements and toxins. The anatomy is really what divides them. Its iconic, instantly distinguished, and can be argued past whatever fictional on-world logic and lore is. As for the fight? Classic dragon. Air nimble-ness doesn't make up for size, strength, and implied dexterous and intelligence. Wyverns would probably be just big armored birds people tame and ride once their tricks are learned well enough. But dragons? More serious legends for sure.

There is more than just the 6 limbed dragon with two legs and wings. For someone raging on about me saying there are more than 10 distinct types of dragons. You sure don't back up your claims. Not all drakes can withstand acidic breath from a wyvern and it doesent mean that if a drake's scales are tough as hell doeaent mean that it wont melt only special and specific genetic mutations on a drake will they win against a specific element of a wyvern breathe for example acid resistand scales or skin

Personally for me, I would prefer Wyverns over True Dragons. Depends on what kind of species of each too and from what area of the world they originate from, intelligence can vary just like any sentient animal and any being/individual. When it comes to evolution, Dragons wouldn't exist because there are no known vertebrates (mammals, reptiles, etc.) that have six legs. Dragons have six limbs, the four used for walking and their two wings. Wyverns meanwhile, could be possible, if it were to exist. Wyverns only have four limbs which makes it a vertebrate. The only animals with more than 4 limbs are invertebrates (insects, arachnids, and crustaceans).

Dragon because of its sharp claws, strengh, thick scales, very hot fire, and its size. Believe me, a wyvern woud get burned so badly. Also, there are so many different types of dragons and not all wyverns have poisonous spikes. But nice models.

Wrong again you dont realise that wyverns are op intelligent they can burn easuly sure but all they could do is just avoid the radius of a drakes breath go around it and shoot acid until the acid melts the drake's scales or it will seep through the gaps and it could do this over and over plus a drake is stupidly slow compared to a wyvern

As far as I know there is no clear definition of what a Wyvern truly is. Some say it's a dragon with 2 wings and 2 legs, others say, it's somewhat like the smaller cousin of a dragon with 2 legs and 2 wings, not being able to breath fire, use magic or speak, but having a poisonous spike on the tailtip. Don't know which one is true, or if even both are true.
