To have an engine make more power a common technique is to increase cubic inches. That can be done 3 different ways: increase bore size, the length of the stroke, or a combination of the two. The term stroker is used when referencing high-performance engines but let's get into what it really means.
A stroke is an engine that has the stroke of its crankshaft increased beyond stock specs. This mod can be done 2 different ways. First, you can offset grind the crankshaft. Before after-market crankshafts were readily available, the crankshaft's rod journal would be intentionally ground into a smaller diameter and to a center line further from the actual center of the crankshaft. This effectively lengthened the travel of the piston in the cylinder, increasing its cubic inches. With the offset grind yields a small increase because the crankshaft can only be ground so much. In addition, it was labor-intensive, expensive, and potentially weakened the stock crankshaft.
The second method is to replace the stock component with a purpose-built aftermarket crankshaft. These are designed specifically for longer strokes, are constructed out of better material, and are built to yield maximum cubic inches without sacrificing strength.
Stroker engines are categorized into 3 types: over-square, square, and under-square. Over-square means the bore is larger than the stroke, square means the two are equal, and under-square means the bore is smaller than the stroke.
Over-square strokers are common in most racing applications. The larger bore and shorter stroke produce the needed air displacement while keeping the average piston lower at high RPM. This improves reliability and allows for efficient air induction.
Square strokers have a good balance of horsepower and torque production. They can be tailored to make stout low-end torque or high-end horsepower depending on the components selected. They're excellent for weekend warrior race cars and high-performance street cars.
Under-square strokers shine in lower RPM and high-torque applications. When the engine's bore size is limited, an aftermarket crankshaft will increase the size by 60-60 ci.
Several aftermarket companies offer not only stroker crankshafts but entire rotating assemblies with all the associated parts to get your bullet together. The only thing that limits stroker applications are the physical size of the engine block and your bank account!

I'm in the minority by liking short stroke engines. Like the 327 Chevy and Ford 302. They wind up fast and will scream lol

so, by increasing the stroke downward, you will get an increased upward stroke or TDC, so you use custom made shorter pistons.

Well I don't think that would work. You would end up with a 271 ci v6 The main journals are bigger on a sbc 400 and the cross plan crank would shaped like a Y in the v6. The V8 would be a +. So over all possible but unreasonable.

jayknight139 I think there’s a ratio where increase stroke increases torque and hp and there’s a threshold where it flattens out. Increasing stroke allows more air and fuel

@@WesternReloader ok that makes sense. And I would like to know more about this because most racing that I'm aware of like motorcycle and f1 stay away from increasing stroke to much because they operate at high rpm. But for street use it might be great.

I have a question about. I am dealing to buy a Trans am 1977 From Germany. This man buy it from Florida,and the car it doesn't have the original motor (4,9 turbo) instead it has a 350 block with 383 stoker. The motor is ebelbrok. I don't know what does means because here i live we don't have those types of cars or engines. And also if i buy it can i find parts from USA??? I am waiting for your answer. Regards from Greece
@AIBCustomFx
@AIBCustomFx 3 жыл бұрын
it means that the 383 stroker engine is originally a 350 ci small block (5.7 litres) bored 0.030 over ( a 350 cylinder diameter is 4 inches and has been increased to 4.030 inches). then a bigger crankshaft has been installed (3.48 inch for a 350ci, swapped for a 3.75 inch ). the combined cylinder diameter increase and bigger crankshaft increases the overall volume to 383 cubic inches (6.3 litres). more volume means more power. 383 engines are beasts! You can find parts at various shops in the usa and import them easily to europe. some car shops in germany and france also have parts (although in smaller variety and quantity). I hope I answered your question buddy. take care.

@@jayknight139 unless you have an aftermarket block or had your block concreted or have had a good set of aftermarket sleeves put in your block but yes your right if you're working with a stock block with stock sleeves and nothing else than it is a good thing not to go too crazy on having your block being bored out too much and just go with a stroker kit which is longer rods and a bigger stroked crankshaft like taking a 350 SBC and putting a 400 SBC crankshaft in it thus turning it into a 383 stroker or taking a 400 block and putting a 350 crank in it does the same thing but I do believe if you do it that way you have to use a 6.0" rod and if you were to use a 350 block with a 400 crank than you could use a 5.7" rod

@@richardprice5978 The rods for the 2.375 journals have the bolts spaced wider than a rod for 2.200 journals usually. On the big Chrysler engine getting the rod past the place where the oil pickup screws into the block is the problem. I've done a 4.140 stroke with an Eagle rod using the Chrysler journal and I had to do some grinding to get past that boss on the block. With a 4.375 stroke and a similar rod made for a 2.200 journal I had to grind a very similar amount. With a 4.500 I think it'll be close to impossible with a larger journal than 2.200 without going with an external oil line to the pickup.
