A mixture of two liquids can be separated out into the two distinct liquids by using chemical properties. In the case of a mixture of water and alcohol, being aware that their boiling points different will help. Alcohol boils at 87 Celsius which is lower than the boiling point of water, 100 Celsius. When bringing the mixture to boil, alcohol will escape first and can be trapped and distilled. While alchohol is still boiling, temperature remains fixed at 87 and does not rise. The temperature starts rising only when all the alcohol has evaporated. Separating a mixture by exploiting a difference in boiling point, is called distillation

Thanks, this channel has helped me a lot in my studies as it's the only channel which shows practical examples.

very nice but some problems occured here: 1. the perfect way is by using fractional distillation as we know all that water evaporates (not boils) at all temperatures above 0 and under 100, so we will find still a mixture of ethanol and water as a distillate. for solving this problem we can use fractionating column containing as an example glass beads to ensure a high surface area for condensation of water but will not affect the evaporation of ethanol. 2. As ethanol is volatile and flammable if there is a leakage in the system you used there wile be an explosion due to this leakage. a solutions for this is by heating a water container till the water boils and then submerge the flask in the water container without flame so no flame would be formed.

Yes yes u r absolutely correct and it would me more better if the used a condenser (if possible)

There will always be a mixture of water and alcohol by distilling. Also, at that small amount, in an open area the chances of an explosion is close to zero. Your suggestion about lowering it into boiling water would work, but it does not solve the leakage problem.

@@TheTuborgen firstly i said IF and the info you gave is kind of wrong and i hope you will watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4mYi4efmqaIjqs Note: you are correct about that there will be water anyways with the distillate as it forms an azeotrope with water so we can get i think a maximum of 96% ethanol.

I sure hope they are explaining how wrong this is. Alcohol is a family of different alcohols, they have different boiling points, not 87c. The water/alcohol mixture also greatly affects the boiling temperature, they claim the temperature remains fixed, it certainly does not. It rises the lower amount of alcohol is remaining. Also he claims the water will remain liquid, how does he then explain why the alcohol contains 95,6% ethanol (as i assume that's what they use as its the most common for examples like this) and 4,4% water?

@@TheTuborgen Hi, I've been learning about this and I agree with you. The temperature at which the first bubble occurs is the bubble point temperature. After that the temperature will continue to increase as the concentration varies while boiling.

True, that's why you will never reach 100% ethanol through distillation.

Please help me 🙏 I'm confused in the distillation method, Exactly when taking pure substances I deliberately used a sample of medicine that had 5 ingredients in it, after I finished extracting it, then I filtered it and got the residue & filtrate. But I'm confused about how to separate the purity of these substances using the Distillation method, even though I have recorded the boiling points of the 5 substances, here are the boiling points: Substance A > Boiling point: 400 °C Substance B > Boiling point: 260°C Substance C > Boiling Point: 379 °C Substance D > Boiling point: 520 °C Substance E > Boiling point: 232 °C For example, if I want to get the purity of substance B, how do I do it ?? 🤔🤔🤔 Who knows, someone might be able to tell, 🙏
