As a French native speaker, 6612770 plus, Solal flechelles and Thibault are all right. "Je suis" would be written and spoken exactly the same whether you mean the verb "être" (to be) and the verb "suivre" (to follow). And "suivre" could have a physical meaning (following somebody) or figurative meaning (not understanding or not following the meaning). So translation could be: I am not, I do not follow or I do not understand. Conclusion: French is a wonderful language.

The sketch started off totally spot on for me, inasmuch as one of the first things I observed about the French was their penchant for going on strike -- striking Frenchmen is almost a cliche. But an air traffic controllers strike in the 1970's led to my US father's intro to single malt Scotch. British Caledonian was the only airline willing to fly with French military ATC replacements. My parents got the impression those Scots pilots would have preferred no ATC at all. Which might explain why the flight attendants were passing out little bottles of Glenfiddich like they were candy!

Holy crap, I (an American) was tasked with taking a co-worker to a French restaurant in Geneva and she wanted her venison steak well-done. Exactly what you described… the French pretended not to understand. It ended like a Bugs Bunny cartoon, with the chef coming out of the kitchen WITH A MEAT CLEAVER to argue with her. In French. She does not speak French, and the chef did not speak English. The maitre d’ and I just rooled our eyes at each other. Best business dinner I ever had.
