My favorite part is actually the Cajun delivery guy. While his fake friends are criticizing and looking down on his humor and his work friends are poking fun at how ridiculous he's being, his actual friend is telling him he needs to eat more and reminiscing about past fun events and inviting him to a cookout.

This was actually a pretty thoughtful skit. We all act in ways that validate other's perceptions of our identity and in turn expect the same from friends, family, and coworkers. But at the same time we walk on a fine line because we would also like to be interesting people (not robots which constantly spew the same dialogue). Its a kind of social dance where the make-believe (the artificial) meets our ego self (our natural state). Friendship is almost like a harmony between the actors and their setting (the setting being the person you are talking to).
@laughandlive377

Andrei T, that can't be right. I act the same with all my close friends. But with the others I'm not very open, yet I treat them all the same way. It might be cuz I'm not a very mean person, but I don't know. All, I know is that I'm not fake.

When we are with different people, those different people bring out different aspects of our personality. It's not "fake". It's just that we show different aspects of our personality to different people.
@williamwoolf8072
@williamwoolf8072 Жыл бұрын
that's only half-right. why do you feel the need to show different aspects of your personality in the first place? because you're subconsciously trying to get them to accept you. but this is not true acceptance. it's because you never had a TRUE connection with them in the first place. that''s why you cannot show them your true personality. relationships are built on having common ground, if you dont have enough common ground with someone you cannot sustain a relationship so you can only selectively pick the part of you that you have in common with them and try to brute force it but that will never work. the more they get to know you, the more you grow apart. you have to find someone that has enough common ground with you to bond over. for example someone that has the same world view as you, the same dream as you, the same passion as you, the same beliefs as you. bonding over a hobby like basketball, movies or drinking alcohol is superficial and is not enough to sustain a connection.

Happens to me alot too. It's not like I'm faking any character, I just adapt my character to diffrent surroundings. So after all if they like me in one group, they will probably like me in other groups aswell. They just wonder why I'm doing this instead of just having one "character" but it's nothing I really chose to do.

Jason Todd Yeah it always works out one of those two ways. The first time I did it it ended up the first way and the second time they got along great... and pushed me out Lmao. I'm older and wiser now to know that I'm not the kind of social butterfly I used to be and I don't have the energy to care about too many people at once. I have about 3 or 4 great friends now and that's all I need.

Haha, I feel like I'm this guy to some extent. I don't mean to be disingenuous, but different friends bring out different facets of me, and I'm comfortable revealing different things to different people. If I'm really close to someone I'll try to show as many different facets of myself as possible, but this is harder with more casual friends. For example, one friend and I might bond over goofy humor and wildly dancing at clubs, another friend and I might bond over our mutual love of science, and then another friend and I might have a mutual interest in religion and volunteering to help the poor. The science-oriented friend might find the religious friend "irrational," the religious and scientific friends might think the goofy friend was shallow, and the goofy friend might think the other two were boring. I worry that if my different friends ran into each other, they'd all hate each other.
@fullerton3303
@fullerton3303 7 жыл бұрын
I actually completely agree with this comment. There are other people in the comments who say that doing anything different with different friends is "dishonest" but your comment perfectly describes that this type of behavior is fine.
@oracleofdewphi
@oracleofdewphi 7 жыл бұрын
Orakle330, hello fellow Oracle/Orakle! Thanks for understanding! I really don't mean to be phony, but unless people are really close friends, I have trouble opening up about all the different facets of my personality and interests. I might attempt to discuss a new facet with a friend, but if the other person sounds really disinterested or judgmental, then I'm hesitant to talk about that topic with them again.
@oracleofdewphi
@oracleofdewphi 7 жыл бұрын
Also, if a part of my life is a really big deal to me, I will want to share that with friends or at least have them be aware that it's a part of my life, even if it's just saying, "I'm off to do ____." If a friend is really judgmental about a lot of aspects about my life, they'll probably not stay a friend or maybe just be an activity buddy.

Italian dramatist and writer Luigi Pirandello formulated this same idea back in 1926 in his novel "Uno, nessuno e centomila" ("One, No One, and One Hundred Thousand"), I highly recommend it. The part about being "different friends to different people", specifically, can be found in Book Three, Chapter X (yes, that's right, "Book three", although it's actually not as long as it sounds: the term "book" is just used to describe a section of the novel, it's like saying "part three", the full novel is just about 350 pages long).

It is actually perfectly normal to act differently around different people. You won't necessarily act the same way around your party buddies as your father-in-law. Or your friends from high school and your friends from work. It's not a lie. They do it themselves too.
