This seems to me like it could decrease the risk of having the back taken if the throw is not successfully completed. But I'm not really experienced in grappling, would you say that's accurate?

Yes and no. If you don’t think you have the proper Kuzushi on the initial entry you can quickly back out, but usually you are fully committed
