Funny I came across this specific video in my recommendations. I recently changed the rear diff oil in my 2007 Tundra. I've owned it since brand new and never had rear diff maintenance before. When I drained it I got out about 7 pints. When I filled it up to the fill plug level it took almost 9 pints. No leaks at the axle seals or other places on the axle. So my only conclusion is that it was underfilled at the factory. The oil looked clean and hopefully no harm was done. I changed it at about 52,000 miles.

It’s about the right mileage that you changed it. The factory oil contains break in additives. Friction and heat are needed to activate the additives and make the teeth surface slippery

I did it on my 2017 Tundra with 117k miles and the oil looked really clean but the level was low..it had about 2qts and it took 4qts, but I was impressed by how clean the gear oil was.

lol @ knowing almost everything about the rear diff by just checking level, adding some gear oil and playing with the breather... love it! :D

You are the only one that even mentions the vent on the axle housing. When I took mine off it went poof 💨 telling me that it was plugged. The axle seals weren’t leaking so I guess I caught it before damaging the seals.

I was curious of the condition of the gear oil due to the addition on those "helper spring". That could be a indication that the ower was hauling heavier items which might result in a little bit more wear and tear on suspension and fluids. Keep up the good work my friend.

Just got home from town (10 miles or so), when I got out I saw smoke from my rear passenger side. I got out the hose and cooled it off, removed the wheel and it looks like the axle seal is toast. I see fluid leaking out all around it and the brakes are dry and move freely. I think I need a rear end job.

I put in 3 quarts and it still is hasn't started dripping from the filler hole? (2002 Toyota 4 runner 2 wheel drive rear differential) it calls for 2.6 quarts but for some reason it's not enough?

i have watched this video before... that vent on top, I had plug on me ... i took it off cleaned it up and it worked for awhile, but clogged again. replaced with a doorman unit for 7$. the symptom was looking like a pinion seal leak... dripping a small amount of fluid on garage floor.... I suspect the undercoating i apply annually clogged it up... might replace it again if it stop spinning... cleaning it really was not successful.

I have a 2004 Tundra Access Cab, with LSD, I would like to change the gear oil with 75W-90 gear oil. However manual recommends oil for LSD not standard differential. Only gear oil I find are synthetic oils with LSD additives, do I have to use that for rear LSD only or can I use that for front differential as well? Thanks
@josephlecheminant22312 жыл бұрын
Does the front differential have a breather like that too?
@josephlecheminant22312 жыл бұрын
Also what happens if you overfill and quickly put in the plug? Will that be bad for the differential?

These tundra diff covers are difficult to change when they rust. To me not a smart design by Toyota. I like Toyotas because most of the engineering is intelligent. Not on this one though. Had a 2001 tundra that rusted away. Had frame changed out but diff cover was leaking.
