Awesome instructions! Guys down at the parts store looked at me cross eyed when I asked for a gear puller. When I told them what I was doing they weren't much help and lent no tools so I had to get creative. I was nervous but after watching you do this at least 30 times I felt like I had it down. Easy finding what I needed from Morris as well. Thanks again brother! 2005 TJ Sport pinion seal DIY job done!

Just finished replacing the seal and drive shaft. I ended up using a a screwdriver to bend the lip of the old seal to remove it. I cleaned the shaft before installing a new seal. I bought a factory seal $30.00 it has lube around the seal. Someone posted using a piece of wood with a hole drilled, tap the seal just to hold it in place, then use the board on the seal using the hammer. Doesn't damage the metal. I used the same board to lightly tap the yoke as I tightened the nut. 1996 XJ SE.

It is related. You have to have tight joints (rod ends and ball joints) then proper alignment. The slop in your tie rod end is allowing a wheel to toe out or in which steers the car. You compensate by turning the wheel. I did tie rods and alignment on my old Ford F150. Wish I had filmed that. It is not that hard. Keep Googling. Somebody had to do a good video of it.

edpvideo If you don't have an impact gun, try it with the wheels on the ground and blocked, or hold the pinion with large crescent or pipe wrench or channel locks. Or, drill two wholes in a long pieve of angle iron and bolt it to the u-joint holes off to one side so you can still get on the pinion nut. Let us know what worked for you.

I am trying to remove the rear pinion seal so had rear tires in the ground. Manual trans was in first with parking brake on. Mine is pretty rusted so I went out tonight and bought an impact wrench to use with a friends compressor. Hope it works. We are looking for a video to remove the front pinion seal for a 2002 Jeep Liberty. Do you know where we can find one? thank you
@user-nq5rd4ck5z12 жыл бұрын
You can do it without an impact. You will just need something to hold the yoke like a large pair of channel lock pliers or a pipe wrench. As for the gear puller I'd have to say maybe. It depends on how tight the yoke fits your pinion. You might be able to make your own. Drill three holes in some angle iron, bolt through the outer holes to the yoke and use a nut and bolt in the center to jack the yoke away from the pinion. Or use this an excuse to go buy that gear puller you always wanted. :)

Great video. Going to tackle this myself when warmer weather arrives. There seems to be a lot of disagreement on the preload/crush sleeve topic. Am I missing something? Isn't preload obtained with an inch pound torque wrench for the pinion rotation NOT loaded with the weight of ring gear/carrier/axles assembly? Any preload reading obtained with the assembly intact is going to be way too much torque.
@user-nq5rd4ck5z6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you would have to remove axles to start over. This video assumes that if you put the nut back in the same spot, it will be just as tight as it was.

Having some seal issues. I replaced u joints and figured I'd replace the leaking seal while I was there. Marked and installed everything just as it came off. Replaced the yoke also since the old one was scored pretty bad. Anyway, 3 seals later....still leaking. Suggestions? It's leaking around the yoke/seal contact area. One other question, is there supposed to be a washer between the out pinion bearing and the base of the yoke? Need some ideas.....Great video by the way
@user-nq5rd4ck5z7 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have more serious problems, or someone replaced the seal before you and got the torque wrong on your pinion. Also, if you changed the yoke, the mark the nut method may not work since the yokes could be a different height. You might want to start over with the more complete method of replacing the crush washer, pulling the axles and setting the pre-load drag. I don't have that video but I am sure others do. Jeep On! ps. cure all front end wobbles before you can expect that seal to last. Jeep On!
@liquidfluidity80617 жыл бұрын
I think I have figured out the Issue. I have noticed a few D35s using a slinger between the seal and the bearing. Not sure if it's just for the Trak Loc set ups or some other reason. I have a new seal and slinger coming. When I torqued the nut down the first time, I measured what it took to get to the original mark. 196-200 ftlbs, which factory spec is 200. I'll post back after I get parts reinstalled

I don't understand how marking the nut does anything? In order for it to be truely in the same spot, you'd have to mark where the nut is at the very last thread before you take it off as well, so you could start the nut in the same place it came off.
@user-nq5rd4ck5z10 жыл бұрын
Unless you flip the nut over, it will always start in the same place. There is only one thread in a nut, therefor only one place to start.

Jnburch.. its a Seal. Its only job is keeping fluid from escaping the differential. If you hear a loud howling noise coming from the rear of the jeep and you look under and it looks like the diff is covered in gear oil, theres a good chance that seal blew and driving a vehicle around wasted all the gear oil and smoked the differential.

Great video! My question is: I have a leaky rear pinion seal on my 89 XJ (Dana 35). It had been replaced once already, but I'm not sure whether or not they torqued the yoke nut back to the original spot. They couldn't remember if they marked the nut. Is there a way to tell if it was done correctly? I guess too loose and you have shaft end-play. Too tight and ???. With that in mind, when I replace the seal, how would I know if it's torqued correctly? Would measuring the pinion/ring gear backlash be useful?
@user-nq5rd4ck5z11 жыл бұрын
To do it right, you need to pull the axles and cover, drain the fluid, get a new crush washer, then tighten the nut until the pinion drags to 10 inch pounds. It would take another video to show that process. Or you could fudge it with the fluid and axles in but the in lbs setting would be a guess. On the other hand, thousands of people have just rammed them back together with an impact. It all depends on how particular you are. Your not going to get play, your just going to either run it too tight and wear prematurely or risk the nut coming loose.
@america1st828 жыл бұрын
Great vid...1 question, doesn't the crush sleeve and nut need replaced when you do the seal? or does marking it work just fine...no slop or leaks? getting ready to do this on my 98 but get different opinions on if marking the nut and yoke is good enough or if you need to redo the preload...
@user-nq5rd4ck5z8 жыл бұрын
This is heavily debated in the comments below. If you trust that this is the original seal and/or the pinion pre-load has not been messed up by a previous disassembly, then mark the nut and pinion and put it back to the same spot and you will end up with the same pre-load. This video was made four years ago and that seal is still performing well. Jeep On!
@america1st828 жыл бұрын

Hey there, I followed your procedures on this job for my 99 wrangler tj(Dana 30 front axel) but neglected to mark the nut before removing it. I did take note that 2 or three threads were showing so when putting it back on I impacted the nut down to where about 2 or 3 treads were showing. What would be that nuts torque spec? I am a bit worried about over or under tightening it. Also I originally marked the case, yoke and drive shaft with paint but the mark on the case rubbed off so I put the yoke back on in about the same position I took it off. Will being off a bit cause any issue? If I am not back on exactly the same way, I am dang neart the same position. My main worry is over or under tightening that nut. I don't do a ton of 4x4 driving but do 4high in snow or driving in other wet/slippery conditions. I appreciate your advice and help. Thanks! (great video(s) by the way!)

Matt Holloway hmmm. Technically it's all about preload on the pinion. to do it right you would buy a new crush washer, pull the axles, and torque it until you have the correct amount of drag on the pinion. That being said, millions of people have just run it back on with an impact and been ok. Maybe take the nut off and reinstall with thread locker, then monitor for noise and wear. You could change the diff fluid occasionally checking for metal in the fluid or uneven wear on the gears. I would probably wheel the crap out of it and dare it too break. Anything can be fixed.
