Sometimes we have to explain that this is just 'preventative maintenance'. If we find the leak, that's great. If not, we might have to reassess. Another option is to recommend a partial re-roof replacement from the ridge down. Some clients might not like that idea, but that's okay. We can't make everybody happy all the time. :) Thanks for posting!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I like the way you think and describe your philosophy. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

It was the symptom, not the root cause. Thanks sir, enjoy your sharing, it's like listening to a very good teacher who knows philosophy (dealing with luck, randomness, risk management), way beyond roof preparing. 🎉

Raked ceiling should have been noted. They are risky to a roofer; for the very reason you experienced. You're an intelligent man. I'm a roofer. You'll survive well friend .

I think the first repair is a fair gamble, trying to fix the obvious. After that i would cut a hole in the gyprock ceiling and water test the roof from the bottom up. It takes a few hours to do properly and people might not like the hole but if they intent to fix the damage on the inside it probably needs patching and painting anyway.
