Sometimes we have to explain that this is just 'preventative maintenance'. If we find the leak, that's great. If not, we might have to reassess. Another option is to recommend a partial re-roof replacement from the ridge down. Some clients might not like that idea, but that's okay. We can't make everybody happy all the time. :) Thanks for posting!

Raked ceiling should have been noted. They are risky to a roofer; for the very reason you experienced. You're an intelligent man. I'm a roofer. You'll survive well friend .

I think the first repair is a fair gamble, trying to fix the obvious. After that i would cut a hole in the gyprock ceiling and water test the roof from the bottom up. It takes a few hours to do properly and people might not like the hole but if they intent to fix the damage on the inside it probably needs patching and painting anyway.
