Dig Dug's Last Ride

Tom Tom gets Dig Dug back together for one last trail ride. When he returns to the shop he immediately starts work on the rear axle, adding a truss, disc brakes and welding the axle tubes to the housing. The old square body Chevy is about to undergo a major transformation.

Hello Tom, from an old welder to a young welder---- I respectfully suggest purchasing a scarfing tip for your oxy-acetelene torch. you can remove axel brackets and such a lot faster and cleaner than with the grinder, with a little practice. Then teach Matt's boys.

Tom, consider welding your Jack Stands fast to the work table to prevent tipping over. Then, you can use motorcycle straps to loop over the axle tubes to keep them from popping off of the Jack Stands.

Tom, you're an engineer and a true fabricator combined...why don't you do a quick little project designing and building yourself a set of universal, quick-on/quick-off, adjustable height, safety chain or bracket equipped rearend housing cradles that go on your gazillion pound steel work/fabricating table? And while you're at it, why not make 'em quicker, easier, stronger, safer and better than Matt's set, just because? You know you would use them for your projects and for working on stuff for other people. ;)

Great process to solid build. When we were concerned about cracking in the heat affected zone, we would also call for post heat in addition to preheat. In a weld shop, they might actually put the weldment in an oven, if no other parts were at risk. In our shop, post heat meant wrap the joint in heavy blankets and let it slow cool.

I get you probably don't want to move the table because of weight but a pallet truck will hold like 5000lbs and is super handy to have in a shop if you don't have one Or heavy jackable/leveling coasters are pretty cheap and easy to install. Thats if moving the table easier / regularly is even desireable at all for you.

There are deburring tools that will let you get to the backside from the front. The blade looks like a hook, and it spins on a handle. You drag it around the hole both ways.

On the subject of the fuel gauge, did you remember to ground the tank to the frame? It's a pretty simple circuit. It has a 90 ohm potentiometer as a fuel level sender and a gauge set up as reverse voltmeter. Grounding the wire going to the fuel lever sender (shorting it) makes the gauge read full, and open circuit makes it read empty. If the tank reads empty after you fill it, it means that there is no path to ground (or a reduced path to ground) in that circuit. In short, you should look at the tank ground and make sure that it is grounded to the frame.

We grew up drinking goat milk as rez Indians we didn't know why cow milk made us sick. It wasn't until lactose intolerance was real and we all are lactose intolerant. I can enjoy cow milk now with the lactose free milk now. We found out my mom who milked the goats was allergic to them.

TomTom's Shop and Farm. Some neighbors started a goat dairy when their son was determined to be allergic to cow's milk. I didn't mind the ice cold sample I was offered, but didn't much care for the aftertaste once it warmed even a little bit.

Time to build a small portable crane to be able to slide into your welding table so that you can lift that heavy stuff without having to get help. Could also then move it to the back of Dig Dug if you need to get some heavy items in the bed. Might make a good project.

My bench is around 1000 lbs. I engineered some heavy casters that I can raise and lower with a threaded rod and a nut. So I can move the table and lower it. Truly nice to have a movable table but also lower it onto feet when I don’t need to move it.

i come from an hvac background and i have noticed that people in auto work or auto fab light the acetylene torch far differently than hvac techs do, is there a reason for that? the flames and temps are super different

different mix of acetylene and oxygen. could be one mix is used for heating and one for cutting. i think for heating you turn the oxygen down from the cutting mixture

NOTHING'S WRONG WITH THAT AT ALL because it actually works for the problems you use them for. Darren aka “Mustie1 has been delivering EXCELLENT content for years, he really goes the extra mile to engage his audience. You may want to check out his channel. Couple of thoughts 🧐. As some have stated the jack stands need to be steadied to avoid drifting out from under those heavy axels. Consider welding plates to the bottom of the jack stands and bolt them down to that “super work bench”. Different hole patterns drilled to match the widths of your project. Use a pallet jack to move the table. Setting up heavy items in the shop so they can be moved with a pallet jack allows them to sit solid on the floor with no wheels but still be mobile.

Yes, I know a few guys who use a pallet jack in that simple, useful, common sense way in their shops, I might be one of 'em. Sometimes things need to be moved, and sometimes those things are heavy and/or large. Pallet jacks are great for that, and just a little bit of design engineering makes it easy to lift up and move machines, benches, tables, truck beds, frames, scrap bins, all kinds of things. ;)

If you are just needing the torch to heat things up, you might want to consider switching from oxy-acetylene to oxy-propane... It's quite a bit cheaper and in a pinch, you can use the BBQ 20-lb tanks for a fuel supply... Oxy-propane is also good for cutting if you have the right tips... You don't have as fine of a flame, so oxy-propane *welding* is not as precise... But then again, how many people still do oxy-fuel *welding* ? They do oxy-fuel *brazing*, but not *welding* ...

Why didn't you buy the right kit that would just bolt to the axel. I have a 92 Dodge W350 and converted the rear axel to disc brakes. No welding just bolt together. Lots of money but so much easier than doing all guess work and no sanding of the pads. they worked great once I found the right master CYL. Have A Great Day

Tom you’re a great dude, but you over-explain things in your videos. Your audience is smart. Explain one time and only what’s necessary and interesting. Allow people to see what happens for themselves. “I’m going to go ahead and start bolting this in”, followed by you bolting it in, something everyone already understands-isn’t necessary. Pace up the cuts, filter down your exposition and you will have videos that are easier to watch and more successful. Know that figuring things out is one of the most rewarding and interesting aspects of viewership even if most don’t realize that’s what makes it interesting. 🤙🏼

I am making everything in my shop movable with a pallet jacket, that table would be ZERO issue moving wiht a pallet jack, you could have moved the axle to your 2 post with the pallet jack, used that to lift, then pallet jack the table under it, 1 man job, no hurting your back

27:25. Clamp the pads with the caliper using compressed air. Then square up the mount to the axle . So u can get full travel outa the piston in the caliper. I seen caliper mounts welded on waayyyyy offset and one pad is. DONE dead quick.

Tom, A better & safer set up is to notch 2 foot long 6x6's stacked up and screwed together to whatever height you need.. Then they won't fall over like jackstands do, or axles fall off like it did on the jackstands. All that weight on a small area extended up higher is very dangerous, as you could have been seriously hurt had that axle hit you!! We don't want to see that happen!!
