Whenever I start feeling whimpy about my garden, I watch a fearless John Lord video for encouragement.

Could be apocryphal, but when one of the head gardeners of one of the UK’s grand estates retired, his final words were “look after the edges.” Some say it was misunderstood and he actually said “look after the hedges.” Both interpretations are worthy. Love your work John, best wishes.

My father gave me my original peony plant and I’ve moved and divided it three different times. You should cut the tops down to the ground in the fall. They need plenty of sun. I think they are beautiful, tough plants that need very little attention.

He did say it would be cut back and staked to marked location.

HI from Canterbury NZ. Great to know you can divide peonies as thought they did not like to be disturbed so good to know otherwise. What are you growing in that large blue pot and did you fill the entire pot with soil/potting mix? I am looking for tips for using a large pot as if wanting to move it later it is difficult if too heavy with soil. Keep the videos coming as you it's a highlight down under. Thanks

Peonies divide and transplant very well. But generally small pieces take a few years to build up bulk before they flower. The silver leaved plant in the blue pot is Senecio Angel Wings. We fill our tall pots with sand to half way up to keep them heavy at the bottom so they don’t fall over

Yes we love John Lord! Alstroemeria should be planted sun? part shade? dry? Thank you
@SleepyKittens Жыл бұрын
some protection from hot sun maybe needed, dependent on your climate. In my northern hemisphere, I think sun is the better option. Good drainage essential, it was rotting in my clay part shade. Kept mine in container for a year now, seems happier.

In Ireland they need a good sunny position to flower at their best

If a plant needs moving you should move it even if it is a peony. Nothing is impressive about a poorly placed plant.

John, i live in USDA Zone 6, my landscape is somewhat shady and I can't get the creeping phlox to take, this was my second year with barely any growth. What ground cover that flowers would you recommend? a friend recommended Japanese spurge but I think its too bulky :( any help?
@pansepot1490 Жыл бұрын
In my experience “viola odorata” spreads and forms an evergreen carpet of round leaves under trees and shrubs and has a good show of scented flowers in early spring. There’s different varieties with flower colors like purple, violet, light blue, pink and white. Only problem it’s not US native and you should check if it’s listed as invasive in your area. “Viola Labradorica” is very similar but with purple leaves. “Ajuga reptans” is another ground hugger for shade with blue flowers in spring. Besides the standard form with green leaves there’s also varieties with purple/maroon and variegated leaves. There’s thousands of comments on John’s videos and I don’t think you’ll get an answer from him. Try googling “ground cover plants for shade” adding more keywords to refine your search. You’ll get plenty of ideas and see what suits you. Anyway, only testing the plant in your landscape will tell you if you made the right choice. Good luck and happy gardening! 😊

creeping phlox needs drier soil. full sun. and can take up to 2 yrs before taking off.

Disliked Peony Bowl of Beauty. Got rid of it. short bloom period, too vigorous vegetatively. Prefer stronger stems newer hybrids now and tree/itoh.
