It's pretty rare that a writer comes along and forever changes the way millions of people understand their own past and the past of a nation. As time goes on, Haley will be even more revered among American writers than he already is.

what? no...Haley was successfully sued in court for stealing the storyline from Harold Courlander. Haley also falsified the historical record of how the black slave trade began. During the 1700s, it was the African tribes who were capturing and enslaving blacks, and then selling by the millions to the Europeans. This minor detail Haley deliberately left out of the Roots story.

A white southern Baptist little child watched "Behold The Only Thing Greater Than Yourself" and going on 50 years later it still matters. If it was aired today, there are too many other distractions to matter as much...but the theme IS universal. Differences, black vs white, Christian vs Muslim, gay vs straight... We are human beings on this earth and we better learn how to get along for future generations. It is very easy to treat human beings like the enemy when they are just people.

To those that say this story is false. If you are African American, go do your ancestry research and I bet it will sound just like his story because if your ancestors was slaves, it was pretty much similar, in which it can sound the same as any other AA in the US. Wake up people!!!

Yes slavery happened in America and it was terrible, but here are four main reasons why Roots was a false story: 1. It was proven that Kunta Kinte was not an ancestor of Haley, as he falsely claimed, because there is zero evidence that Kinte ever existed. 2. Haley plagiarized 81 passages verbatim from a book called The African, and copied that into Roots. Also, ghost writer Murray Fisher wrote almost all of Roots. 3. Black slavery was not solely a white man's crime, as Haley wanted his readers to believe. By the 1800's nearly 4000 black slaveholders bought African slaves to work on their own plantations. 4. White men did not enter Africa to steal slaves, as Haley claims in his book. Historical facts prove that the dominant African tribes captured and transported black slaves to the trade ports along the African coastline and sold them to Europeans in exchange for cloth, metal and guns.

ROOTS-In 1978 Alex Haley agreed to pay Harold Courlander {the author of 1967's "The African"} $650,000 in an out-of-court settlement for plagiarism. Harold “Hal” Courlander deserves to have his name above that of Haley's as the author of "Roots."

Since Roots aired 40 years ago, Mr. Alex Haley has been considered controversial. Also, critics and opportunists have tried to undercut his legacy. Yes. He was sued. However, Mr. Haley never claimed every aspect of his book was true. He stated that Roots was based on his family's oral history. So, some parts of his story are unverifiable and dramatized. However, there are KZbin videos that show pictures of his extended family existed along with where some of them worked and lived.

Talking to every Maga nationalist worldwide! “we” being rooted, grounded and invested as the only African American coalition that built the black communities you now share as your own, need “you” who are diverse in your opinion, to understand that we did not come this far, did all of this struggling, accomplished all of our wealth so that you could prosper and we can just journal your progress! You got this entire thing twisted out of shape! “We are not a diverse “ group like the LGBT, or like those who migrated to escape dictators, we are authentic real settlers who live and thrive as human beings with wealth, health and progress for our own good here in the authentic historical black America! You have tried to bury us in diversity, but we thrive in authentic afronicity from our roots to our boots! Let’s go, and any politician, be it black or otherwise, that makes the disasterous mistake of assuming we are not real and our goal is no met, that is to his own peril! Get up, all rise!
