When I worked as a stormwater engineer at the local county government, I always recommended sloping the road into the bank and utilizing crossover pipes where needed for drainage control. In the winter, with icy conditions, I'd rather slide into the bank than down over the hill. And that's how I graded in all the roads on my property.

Well you tangentially answered something I wanted to ask. I have a half mile driveway with 70% of it cut into a side, sloping hill here in Pa. I maintain the lane with a nice crown….However this means I have several ditches that lead into drain pipes that are admittedly too small, this means they often plug up. I was thinking of removing the crown and just have a simple outs-sloping driving surface like a well designed mountain bike trail would be ideal …. It probably would work. I can see the risk of sliding off the down sloping side would be the biggest negative. Is there any other reason why not to consider it?
@davecrable13569 ай бұрын
@joecasalena8263 I would say that it depends on the nature of use and the frequency. If it's a residential driveway used every day, I wouldn't slope it to the outside. If only used occasionally and during dry conditions, it shouldn't be an issue. On my roads, I typically utilize 12" HDPE (ADS N12 smoothbore pipe) for my culverts. And regardless of culvert size, they all need to be checked for blockages. I had some tree limbs block the entrance of a 30" pipe that caused it to overflow. I check all my culverts to remove downed limbs and debris, especially before and after big rain events.

Visiting a project during a heavy rain is always a good idea, and if the road allows (no in this case lol) you can side bucket the ditch while it has active runoff. All things considered your ditch is working quite well.

Hey bud I'd put me a couple more road tiles in one at the low spot for sure and maybe one at the beginning of the road a little surge at the ends of those culverts wouldn't hurt but If this rain don't hurt it you are probably good. However covering ones rear is not a bad idea ever

I have been watching your video for 2 years now and learned a lot. I have a big project this spring. I have to build a 2 mile stretch of road to my property to the county road. Lots trees and red clay to work with. The only problem is money , but I have saved up some and still saving more.

Nice job this is the best way to find out how your drainage is going to work only thing I would suggest is to rip rap the ends of the pipes and down the slope to curtail washout’s in the future and go up the slope from the inlet of the pipe up about 20 to thirty feet to control the amount of mud and debris that flows into to especially during a torrential downpour where you have massive amounts of water in a short period of time

Well it dosent require an engineering degree, common sense however is required. And be prepared for follow up maintenance. The ditch on the high side of the road needs to be maintained, along with culverts and pipe crossing the road as required. All of which cost money, which is also the reason most of these things fail.
@bp55589 ай бұрын
Property owner negligence is the cause of most failures, yes. Hopefully, Todd's customers are well informed AND prepare themselves for the work ahead. Considering how many of Todd's videos are repeat customers, I'd like to think he does a pretty good job of educating them on future maintenance needs including reasonable lifespan expectations of the initial project.
