One thing to mention on the H5 and H6 is the XLR capsule dose not supply phantom power only the XLR's in the body of the recorders supply phantom power. Had an H4n Pro for a week. Startup time takes forever! So I exchanged it for the H6 instead. Very happy with it as it has analogue dials that are quicker to adjust and has 6 channels and more power 4 batteries instead of 2. If you can afford the H6 get it you won't be disappointed 👍🏻

Good video. I am using an H2n but hotshoe mounting it on camera and plugging output directly into camera. This gives great stereo sound and means I don't need to to sync, which seems to me the ideal option so long as the audio recorded (in my case ambient nature sounds) can be recorded on two tracks. If you need to record more tracks from others sources I can see the benefit of recording audio separately and syncing in post.

I am super disappointed with the h1n handy. I LOVE my h4n. I mainly use these for picking up sound effects in the wild. I got the handy because I wanted something lighter for backpacking with less bells a whistles. I don't really need all the inputs and features the 4n has. However, the 4n picks things up in the distance way better than the handy. I can't hear birds or thunder at any distance with the h1. The h4 I can here everything near and far. The handy has good sound quality for close up, but it sucks for what I wanted it for, grabbing a bird song, thunder, etc. while hiking to add to my KZbin videos.

i have a zoom h4n but as a singer and acoustic player, shooting videos outside, do i need h6?
@digiDirectAustralia4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. No, The H4n should be sufficient. It has 2 XLR inputs, if you're singing and playing guitar you can have one mic for vocals and one for the guitar. I've shot a number of singer + one instrument (usually piano) live performances with my H4n. You won't need the extra mic inputs from the H6 unless you had more instruments involved.
@ecedorsay4 жыл бұрын
digiDirect but they say that the onboard preamps and mics on the H6 are far better as sound quality and the compressor types in h6 as well. I wonder how big is the difference.

That’s what I’m wondering too. I’m an opera singer and am having the hardest time figuring out the right combo of room ambience and clarity. It’s hard enough that I’m having to record at home right now (Covid) in a city apartment with traffic outside. I’ve been using Blue Ice with the gain turned way down and my higher notes still blast through too much. Zoom was recommended to me with just the regular built in mics but idk which one is best 🤷🏼♀️

Well done video. I will be using a multiple camera shoot on a live music performance using the H6 Zoom to sync later. Do you offer any "How To" videos on setting up the H6 prior to performance? I"ll be running two tracks out of a mixer board, and using the other two tracks into external mics.

H6 now only comes with the XY capsule and no case for less money but with the option not to have a rubberised plastic shell. This is good because rubberised plastic doesn’t age well. My H5 has become a sticky mess.

Fantastic review!! I am an emerging videographer with a particular interest in documentary/one-on-one interviews. I've used the H4n in the past and just recently used the H5 recorder. Loved the sound quality of them both. Looking at getting my own now. The H1 is more accessible $-wise for me at this point- would the recording quality be comparable at all to the other two, or is there a significant compromise? Wondering if it'd be worth it or not. Thanks!

For ambient sound you'd probably want to use the XY mics on the top, in which case they will all have comparable performance. The differences between them are more about what features and ports they provide.

I was about to buy Zoom H2n for it's five built-in mic capsules provide that could be helpful capturing ambient audio. How would you rate H2n ? Is it worth over H1?
@DaddyEric2228 жыл бұрын
I have 2 H2n, and an H1. I use the H2n all the time! The only place it falls back is recording an interview in a fairly loud area. One cool thing you can do with it for interviews at a desk is hide it on the desk and record right there. Super easy and quick. I also use the 2 H2n for recording a surround concert (music from the back as well as front and sides) so the 2 channel surround is perfect for that application.

I would recommend the Rode Videomic Pro as a start (not the Stereo version). Watch this video for more info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH7KqKKuaMR8jZo If you wanted to get more complex you can get a lav mic setup for dialogue - either an H4n with a Rode Lavalier GO or the RodeLink Filmmaker kit. But if you're new to audio a Rode Videomic Pro is a great place to start
