As good as adventure was I've never gone back to watch it. 02 on the other hand. I've watched it multiple times. I never thought, "I wish it was the old cast instead of the newer crew." And post Ken joining is some of my favorite non-tamer related stuff in digimon

I do find that at some point, a cast does need to get new blood. And Ken was a welcome addition.

I think I like Gatomon (at least in Adventure) for similar reasons why you feel Ken is the strongest character. Both were former villains who, only getting there from personal suffering, second-guess their circumstances and wind up redeeming themselves as heroes. I can also forgive TK being bland because, due to him writing the story as an adult, he could be more of an observer. Like the narrator in The Great Gatsby not being the titular character, but an observer. Also, TK gets points for kicking Ken's ass. Also, it took me till today to realize Yolei is wearing an aviator cap in her Digital World outfit, because Hawkmon flies and she occasionally rides him through the air.

Villians turned heroes are usually interesting, I find. We see them at their worst as villians. Then, as heroes, it's either "I feel recourse for my actions and want to make amends" or "I may be one of the good guys now, that doesn't mean I am a good guy". Which can say a lot of the character. That's a good observation of T.K. Still wish he was the lead protagonist. At least he got his fists. Yolei's outfit works for practical use, but from a character perspective its....off. at least for me.

Also kari and tk get moments and have a role they very do well, being legacy characters and tks is, ok, if weird and karis depression, God i wish they gave her some chosen bride of who the hell is in the dark sea forrest. But its good. The oh she is the light bearere an , has that depression darkness. Its moody. Ok Davirs is fair, he is really working great with Ken, and given how much there is them seduced by darkness, its good to have a chipper character. Also Ken is th strongest character, he is a really well done toxic gamer corrupted by evil to do its bidding being, very very toxic. And how all tha pressure and darkness comes from the he was nice got traumatized guilty and unhealthy coping to , ok i think he is just pressuring to be a picky overarchiever and how thats, bad, anyways him being stopped given the needed punch and loosing , yeah going from his toxc gamer coping straight to depression to being open to grow as person and try to make up, and that gradually even taking help. He is actualy a really good toxic gamer radicalized by, bad parties character. and growth afte and dealing with his past. Even how he feels bad and alone and, bad influences got him there. black wargreymon the edgehog is pretty good too.

okay so as a crazy fan of 02, i feel like i want to mention something that in my opinion adds a lot of depth to a lot of small moments: part of the plot is that davis (daisuke) doesnt have any friends, and being a digidestined doesnt change that. daisuke is a character who doesnt get along with pretty much anyone, not even his sister. his one friend is kari and shes only his friend bc theyve been in the same class their whole lives, so his one sided rivalry with tk comes from being afraid that his only friend is being taken from him. then theres everyone making fun of daisuke which limits his character growth, and finally: paildramon. this is something ive known from pretty much the beginning of *any* video essay that im the only one who knows about it. but when daisuke and kens digimon fuse, it comes from 2 things. on daisukes side, their connection is born from someone finally trusting him and being vulnerable with him like no one else is, which at this point has been established through the other 4 being friends with each other and not him. on kens side, he genuinely believes that his actions make him worth less as a person than the others, and while daisuke has believed in him from the start, it isnt until this scene that ken really *sees* it. anyway, you made a lot of fair points, but i love adding insight to stuff like this with my own understanding of this world and its characters. have a lovely timezone

​@botluckproductions the English dub really does do him dirty - as a dedicated daisuke fan, I came to appreciate him more after finally looking at the Japanese. I never hated him in the english, but I didn't really notice him. When I saw how he was in the jp, I realized he's actually a really unique character. Also - his very character is exactly why he was able to defeat final myotismon. And it's kind of set up pretty early.

I think it's mostly throw away lines if I recall. Like in context they make sense, but at the time they are just...there. Dub doesn't help this. Yeah Matt going to space is a hold over if my research is correct. Probably would have been Digimon derived from all of mankind's space junk returning for revenge...or actual aliens. Maybe Marathon is part of Digimon Canon and Durandal is a Digimon

@@botluckproductions Yea you didn’t miss much, I watched the original and I do not remember Adv or 02 referencing Matt and astronauts or remotely anything like that. I remember reading somewhere that the astronaut thing is what the writers had in mind for future digimon story, where they fight digimon in space, but I found out about this years ago, so I’m not sure if its real or not, but I’d take that over nothing for now. With the rest of the kids at least there were subtle hints to their future jobs, for example, Mimi always had a weird taste in food, that, apparently runs in the family, (we see her mother serving fried rice with ice cream/whipped cream and the father loves it) she has a personality fitting for tv show, she became a celebrity chef or has a cooking show

Having seen the Sub of 02, I think I can confirm Davis has a bit of a localisation issue. He becomes less "stupid" and more "doggedly determined" around Ken's redemption, and while he has some doofus moments, it's not as prevalent as the beginning of the show. It becomes pretty obvious how much he changes and thinks about helping the people around him over selfish, petty drama and romance. I still kind of think his build up to that point is underwhelming though, it just kind of happens out of the blue, starting with his attempts to recruit Ken to the team. He gets some "character building" in the episode where he has to learn to make a difficult choice to attack Tai's controlled Agumon, and get the Digimental of Friendship; imo a kind of forced episode, because you only see him care about protecting his friends one other time and he seems totally out of character here. It would have made more sense for his behavior to gradually go from dumbass to the focused hero by the end of the show, but that's not how it went. Overall I recommend giving the sub a chance, it's a bit more mature, and as usual, the Japanese OST _slaps hard._

I can only tolerate it as much as I do because I've grown overly obsessive over certain aspects of the shows (like the evolution sequences for some reason, but I get why anyone else would find them unimpressive.)

I think many fans are too affected by nostalgia when they judge 02. I loved It too when I was a kid but I soon came to realize it is far worse than Adventure and one of the worst Digimon series in general. Ironically the 2020 Adventure reboot and Digimon Survive honor the original Adventure far better than 02 or Tri. And yes, I despise Davis too

02 is an ok series, but comparing it to what came prior and after kind of ruins it. Looking at where the Adventure series would go, 02 unintentionally foreshadowed the continued additions Adventure would get over the years. The additions are fine, but have a tendency to contradict one another. As for the 2020 anime and Tri. I have seen a few episodes of the 2020 anime, and its a different beast from the original. As for Tri, I liked it but have some notes on how it could be improved. Honestly, knowing what i know of last evolution puts a bad taste in my mouth with the 2020 anime and Tri. But that's for a future review. I do hope this is a Dub thing and not how he is in the original Dub.

@botluckproductions 02 ruined many good things Adventure had set up, from the lore to irs original great finale replaced by that lazy, uncalled for and soulless we had in 02, that is why I can't condone it. Over the years many more installments were made and most of them (especially all of Tri and Kizuna) were for the most part a soulless recycling of something we had already seen just to prey on nostalgia... Even Kizuna's supposed sad and heartbreaking ending is undone by 02 and, even without it, Meiko turned out to be just a source of moe that kept stealing screentime from the other Digidestined with potentially interesting but awfully executed plots. In my country every Digimon Dub that was made (which are actually very few and stopped at about season 6) was great but that was mostly because my country has great voice actors. Although most people tell me it is just English dub that was awful... For better or worse the Adventure 2020 reboot was the least offensive and even good, as it never tried to copy the original but simply told its own story. And you should also try Digimon Survive, it has the original Adventure vibes but with more mature and even darker themes.

Cody’s observation on not knowing which persona TK has is the real one, makes me think that if they gave this more screen time or an actual arc some cool stuff could have happened. Like we’ve seen before that when a digidestined is consumed by anger they cause their Digimon partner to go through dark digivolution. So if they actually gave time to this plot point about TK’s character we could’ve seen him dark digivolve Pattamon into Devimon or something, since Devimon is like a fallen version of Angemon. And then like the lesson obviously is about how TK can’t give into anger and needs to manage that feeling better. Would’ve been interesting, also would likely traumatize TK again, but ya know it’s interesting to think about.

This might not mean anything, but in my country Latvia I grew up watching Digimon Adventure 01 & 02 with the English Dub. But as for Tamers and Frontier, I watched the original Japanese versions. Why my country showed Tamers & Frontier in Japanese instead of English you may ask? My guess is how much of a backlash Digimon Adventure 02 English Dub was getting. It got so bad, that people who were airing Digimon shows on TV at the time decided to show Tamers & Frontier in Japanese, so that people can still have some interest in Digimon, without the audiance hating the series. My biggest problem with 02 is how the show was handhled, especially in it's writing department. It's not like I hate 02, but at the same time I wished it was handled better. It didn't help either how annoying Davis as the main characer was.

@Asaylum117 go Baltics! My family is from Lithuania and saw one or two episodes in Lithuania. As for why the switch, my guess is what was happening with Fox Kids in the States. At the time, Fox was going thru some financial troubles, and Disney was willing to buy out some parts of Fox. Disney was mainly looking to buy UPN, but in the buy-out, also gained Saban and their animation library and contracts. What I suspect happened was during negotiations between Fox and Disney, Fox wasn't allowed to make broadcast deals. Givin Digimon was popular, the station couldn't wait for the deal, and instead went directly to Japan. As for writing, my understanding is the Japanese dub is better. That being said, its still the same show.

I kinda wished the duo digivolutions were different in my head I thought kari and ken, or kari and tk would have the duo digivolution over kari and yolei or ken and davis. I get that they wanted to give the matt and tai besties treatment to davis and ken but it just didn't feel as fufilling at least when I watched it It also felt like there was a lack of presence concerning tk and kari which is weird since it would be more fufilling if they were the main focus considering their role in 01 but at least when I remember it they had less of a role in 02 than in 01 which is insane considering 02 is supposed to focus on the newer generation of digidestined The best thing about 02 for me was blackwargreymon, and ken though even blackwargreymon throwing himself away felt like wasted potential and GOD I DONT EVEN UNDERSTAND HOW KEN AND YOLEI BECAME A THING!?!??! Personally I would have had Cody and Ken. Sort of play into the Oikawa element of the story. And to give Cody relevance. It's worse in the movie with TK and Kari as they get stuck on an Amtrak. But jokes aside, TK and Kari were not used well this season. Blackwargreymon could have been something. But instead became bloat. One theory I hear is how the pairings of Digidestined came about from drawing names from a hat. I wonder if Yolei and Ken is the reason people believe that rumor.

Davies dream is, davies hasnt really a dream driving him because he lives in the moment. Thats why. Ok he is really needed that , he is going on no matte rhow dark it gets in the moment and does. Its not very deep but very complementary giving ken as first a chance because he is very , in the moment. ok yoli should have done some action or activism job, she even could have been, a cop? idk nothing wrong with raisin kids but she could have been also a job with action and then , she just sounds like she would really do some activism at least. Or organizing. And the digimon exist to complement and bring out and care about the destines needs and, yeah he does , be ther and try to not let him, , he is very caring not wanting ken alone and and that fits. Honestly thats why veemon, he is really ther to be Davies goofy partner, and , Davies makes a lot sense in a series that planned to have an eldrich digimon in the sea of darkness marrying maybe corrupting kari, And yeah TK should at least have wise dude moments of the group, as , he didnt need to be the leader bt , defining moments. Idk maybe like Joe, a more moody angry Joe . And Davies didnt need growth, not much than being less impulsive but , he makes sense as dude thats not the smartest or wisest but always moving on in a series that, yeah has a lot darkness and , would be even more had they gone withthe eldrich in th sea of darkness direction i imagine.

The dub came in a time where anime was seen more like a cheap fill for cartoons. It's gotten better over the years, but issues still persist. And will have to consider that. There's a sweet spot I need to find of footage and me.

I lean more towards Yolei and Ken as my favorite. I do wonder how different Davis is in the Japanese Dub.

The 02 Movie(s) are even worse since they're a two part OVA, minus Revenge of Diaboramon

It wasn't the greatest, and had its problems But it did lead to Tamers. Maybe one day there will be an 02 Reboot.
