I love how each of the kids came from a different kind of family: Tai and Kari - regular middle class family Matt and TK - divorced parents Sora - dad's not home, mom wants her to continue the family business Izzy - adopted Mimi - rich parents Joe - his parents had high demands on him because of his older brother They all had different issues they had to deal with which showed us that there are other children that have the same problems we do.

Let us take a moment to remember they BASICALLY had a character who was forced into submission by a sociopath to be his soldier and was willing to kill a kid...until she began to soften up thanks to two people (the kid and her closest ally who he saved) and eventually was able to break free from that cycle. Yeah I love Gatomon a lot.

I feel bad for hikari the most...in the film dub wise she narrates exposition but her character is useless in the film so people probably hate her voice and role and just decided to never watch the show leaving them with a naive bad taste of her character but in the show she is a great character given so much emotional content that makes you care for her from her almost dying cause of taichi twice to her becoming a literal possessed being of light like an angel teaching us about the origins and leading a revolution of the union numamon or her sad digimon storyline finding gatomon and the scene with wizardmon then the dark ocean subplot that sadly got dropped which was going to give her more depth and draw her closer to daisuke..she was a great character imo and the movie shits on her

Then they had a kid who literally went to another world to harass, enslave and torture it's inhabitants who was a chosen hero and literally killed his partner in which at that point he learned the world wasn't a game and the inhabitants were alive. Also being manipulated partially to create and place the towers as he was extremely talented and smart and great at programming. That would be Ken Ichijouji. As far as it goes Digimon is a lot darker then a lot of people realize. Many probably are only starting to realize it with Ghost Game where many of the episodes the digimon are related to various folk lore and urban legends and show how dark the digimon universe is to it's highest extent. From spiriting people away to notable deaths by digimon who ate people or have digimon who kill other digimon.

Izzy realising he was adopted at a young age, was one of the most heartwarming and hard hitting scenes in Digimon. He already knew, yet still did his best to be whatever he though his 'adopted' parents would be, knowing that they are the ones that raised him. He had such a mature attitude for a complex situation, and it was written so well in both sub and dub. Izzy's story arch seems so underappreciated, considering how good it is. Joe too. Sucks not to be the main character I guess.

Angemon seemed strong enough to beat myotismon on his own ...he was scarred to fight him and he got hurt by his hand of fate so wtf...was wizardmon death totally avoidable yes ..but also gatomons transformation into angewomans evolution seemed pointless a well ...her combining all the attacks of everyone else also seemed irrelevant since he just respawned as malomyostimon and then the mega were introduced in the most convulated coconfusing way possible..good job digimon ..shoot arrows at kids to unlock power ...yeah that makes sense? ...wtf
@shadenox81646 жыл бұрын
Hurt him isn't the same as defeating him, Myotismon was still an ultimate at the time and would have had little difficulty smacking Angemon a champion level around once the fight was reduced to one on one which it would have been very quickly without Angewoman's intervention. Also combining their attacks made sense as we saw in the fight Myotismon can stop attacks that aren't coming from holy digimon. By giving their power to Angewomon she could turn that power into a celestial arrow which he can't stop and makes the attack far more devastating then them all attacking separately since most of them wouldn't hit.

19:55 perfectly describes my childhood and what I fear is lost with today's digital age where every content can be gained instantaneously. There was definitely more weight with having to wait for the next episode. There are still shows that air on a weekly basis but most if not all them can be binged at some point and time after it's on tv. Waiting weekly for my cartoons and not having a source on the web is what made that part of my childhood so special. It felt like my weekend cartoons was earned by working through the school week. Although I appreciate the advances in internet and the access, I miss those days where a moment like Angemon digivolving felt like moment earned through loyalty and waiting. Thanks for reminding me about that.

Puppetmon was always my favorite. I got back into Digimon by way of the Japanese versions when I was a Freshman in college. I made a 2/3 scale puppet of Puppetmon. It's flawless. I spent five days in a row with no breaks making that puppet (in addition to opening and closing the mouth, I can make him smile, frown, pout, scowl, grin, and smirk all by moving my fingers in a certain way in his head). I even set up a special mechanism for the mouth so it could be more expressive. It's also a fully-functional puppet (though marionett-ing him doesn't work so well, the string control is too soft to support his weight) with a hole hidden behind a flap on his back and arm-rods. It was a lot of hard work; I glued myself to the belt-buckle, sewed myself to him three times (Christ, that hurt). Still, I'm proud of myself. I have probably have the only working full-body puppet of Puppetmon (or Pinnochimon). Sorry, that has nothing to do with your review. I just wanted to share that.

Hey so, I just wanted to take a quick moment to point out that it's incredibly good that they make it clear early on that Kari is the 8th child. Because it means that we the audience know, even if the others don't. Why is this good? Why is this a *brilliant* move on the part of the writers? Why is it so good that I feel the need to write about it in the comments? Well stop asking so many dang questions and maybe I'll be able to answer. This is important because it means there is now suspense. One could argue that there would be suspense regardless, that we know Myotismon is going to do A Bad Thing to/with the 8th child. But by showing us who they are, now we have a face to attach to the consequences of failure. Instead of just finding some hitherto unknown character later on as the 8th child, we, the audience, find out pretty quickly that it is Kari, Ty's sister. A character we already have a connection with from Ty's short return to the physical world earlier. A character we see more of once the whole party returns to the physical world. Now the stakes have a face put to them, we know that this isn't some nebulous "other kid" who would have Bad Things happening if the bad guy succeeds. It's a character we know. Alfred Hitchcock once said words to the effect of, "You need to show the audience what is going to happen, because then there is tension. Without knowing exactly what will happen if things will go wrong, all there is is nebulous uncertainty." And Digimon shows a perfect understanding of this in revealing Kari early on as the 8th child.

I need to give a big thumbs up to Matt and T.K.‘s dad. When monsters show up and the kids have to start fighting, all the other parents turn into the same sort of background parents in a kids action show: first being in shocked disbelief, and the most they can do being to shout to “Be careful!” You know the archetype. Mr. Matt and T.K.’s Dad, though. (I forget his name, so he’s just Dad.) Dad immediately gets on board with the situation, taking it seriously and absorbing every piece of information his kids give him. Dad accompanies them on their rescue mission and is invaluable in his support. Dad sneaks in, puts his life on the line distracting Myotismon’s minions, and keeps a level head so he can help the kids the whole time while all the other adults are stuck in a fear state. He also memorizes each and every Digimon’s name as he hears them and is unfazed by them transforming and changing their names. There’s a cool moment where a bunch of the Digimon are gathered and Dad starts giving out tactical directions, nailing each Digimon’s name even though he’d only just heard them, and everyone listens. Dad was a real adult in a situation full of kids and cartoon adults, and he did his utmost to support the kids in the little time he was onscreen. But he really needs to stop smoking.

Wasn't he a policeman? Maybe that's why he took charge of the situation. He was only the one smart enough to see his kid's Digimon. I loved how they showed us a lot about Izzy's parents. They are really nice people and their backstory with Izzy is why he's my favorite chracter. They weren't aware of Tentomon though so they weren't there during the able.

0:54 whoa whoa whoa i don't remember Tai ever talking down about his friends like that - watched one of the European dubs that match Japanese perfectly. Might be something American editors decided to add because the series wasn't edgy enough for them. In fact i just checked, the original doesn't have this sequence. Instead of Tai introducing his friends, an off-screen neutral narrator voice simply says their names without trying to characterise them. In the same moment, all of them go about their lives in that summer camp, while they notice the unusual weather event. Characters don't do digipuns, the show takes itself rather seriously and doesn't poke fun at its limited animation style, and it doesn't have to because there's plenty of humour regardless, various things being called digisomething in the digiworld is never addressed, and the word "monster" is carefully and thoroughly avoided both in script and in branding - if the viewers want to make very obvious conclusions about naming, it's completely up to them. And no, there is no digirap. The intro is an upbeat j-rock (Butterfly by late Kouji Wada), that... depends on the specific translation, but generally emphasises the values of dreams and bonding, which fits the show really well, which isn't supposed to be edgy at all! Occasionally very dark and serious, but trying to be genuine and heartfelt. The series aired without an outro in Europe. The animation is certainly very budget-conscious and has lots of reuse, particularly for walk and talk sections that make up the majority of the show, but apart from the transformation sequences that are set against black background and copied verbatim, the reuse was generally against redrawn backgrounds, so it's not disturbing and never seemed out of place, the animation QC seemed alright. It's completely digital compositing, so it wasn't expensive to fix for the original studio, unlike in earlier shows animated on celluloid. I think some of the animation errors that you found may be due to American re-editing. Perhaps the dub editors wanted to cut down on dialogue that they may have not considered appropriate to the audience and slow paced sequences, so they reused the running animations and bits of action sequences. The pacing of the original show is reasonable, there's no episode where nothing at all of consequence happens, but it's not going out of its way trying to be frantic and action packed. Europe didn't go for censorship either, Nanimon is addicted to brandy for example. Not that it makes it better or worse, after all, you probably knew what they meant the very first time you watched it. Like uh-uh, soda, right. I'm happy that it managed to remain a good series for you lot, in spite of American editors apparently trying to murder it.
@Jotari6 жыл бұрын
Odd. I watched it on broadcast in Europe too and I distinctly remember that opening, because Tai never really talks to the audience like that again.
@SianaGearz6 жыл бұрын
I forgot. Germany, Italy and Spain ended up with genuinely good versions that attempt to track the Japanese original and its vision, with German version being the one that i am specifically comparing to here. Finnish version is a bit odd. France, Benelux, Sweden and Poland with Czech Rep. ended up with American re-dub and inherited all of their changes. In Germany in particular, the popularity was anything but brief, the show really caught on. I recall the neighbouring Czech Rep. didn't end up cherishing the show much at all. I think the American studio's changes specifically made the show lose a lot of its lasting appeal for European audiences that were subjected to them.

Semi-related fun fact: Monocromon is actually named after the real life dinosaur it's based on, Monoclonius (now considered a dubious genus), but due to a mix-up regarding Japanese transliterations, most people seem to think it's derived from "monochrome" and the English version spells its name "Monochromon". Luckily, that name works just as well due to Monochromon's color scheme.

Kari is short for Hikari. Her name is literally just the word "light" in Japanese, so when they say "Kari's crest" they're already saying "the crest of light." Funny coincidence there. lol I think her specific character trait is supposed to be empathy or selflessness. It activates when she's feeling strong emotions for others, but she basically used it the second she got her hands on her crest and digivice, so, unlike the other kids, Kari never lost the trait that made her stand out the night they were chosen, and would have been the first to get to ultimate if she'd been with the group all along.

difference between pokemon and digimon is: pokemon is a slave of human digimon is bestfriend and partner of human

@steropeshu4 жыл бұрын
That’s really not true, a LOT, and I mean a TON of things in pokemon revolve around the living together aspect. Digimon can able to talk, so you’re able to connect with them more as characters, while pokemon are more akin to a pet, as they’re more animalistic. You typically don’t call dogs slaves of humans. Good luck reading all this. In the first episode of the anime, Dexter says that pokemon like battling, and wild pokemon can attack out of jealousy of having a trainer. In the Yellow chapter of the pokemon manga, the main conflict is with the Elite Four, who are destroying cities and killing people so pokemon can live free of human intervention. This doesn’t work, and throughout the chapter it shows how it’s true that humans can be garbage people but a vast majority still have a mutual friendship with their pokemon. The character N worked with Team Plasma, who wanted to make everyone release their pokemon because having them is unethical and impairs the pokemon. Turns out it was just a plot for power, but N truly believed in this. In every single battle he has a different team, so he likely uses wild pokemon he’d befriended or releases them after battle so they don’t have to be in pokeballs. In one of the more recent games, there’s an NPC who tells the story of how her husband died in a traffic accident, and before impact he returned his Machamp to its pokeball to protect it. When Machamp was released it threw its pokeball somewhere far away so it would never have to think of the guilt that its trainer died. In the movie I Choose You the character Sorrel recalls how his family had a Luxray, and when he got lost in a snowstorm it came out to find him, and froze to death while protecting him from the cold. Because of this, Sorrel’s values the relationship between him and his pokemon even more. Near the end of the movie the character Cross is able to snap one of his pokemon out of mind control by triggering memories of when they first met, and has abandoned his “only the strong are worth anything” mentality. In the movie The Power of Us it highly focuses on the relationships between pokemon and humans. The character Margo is saved by Zeraora, and in turn she goes really far lengths to try to return the favor. Zeraora hates humans due to them burning down a forest a long time ago, but sees that pokemon and humans are able to go farther if they work together. The character Toren has severe anxiety and is able to keep moving forward with pushes and assistance from his pokemon. Callahan is a liar and feels horrible about himself and feels like none of his friendships are actually real because of it, and is able to come to terms with himself and become more honest when he befriends Sudowoodo. Harriet has issues with being around pokemon that she overcomes, due to her grief of loosing her Snubbull to a fire while retrieving an important key. In Sword and Shield, the legendaries Zacian and Zamazenta had protected the region from destruction alongside two human kings, and are able to be caught by the player and your friend Hop after proving yourself. The player stands up to meet the gaze of the pokemon, while Hop earns the other’s favor by being able to calm it down after a power overload. In the new anime series, the character Gou catches a ton of pokemon to fill his Pokedex, and he’s seen playing with them while they’re staying at the professor’s house, instead of just catching them and forgetting about them. Friendship is also an important stat in the games. A lot of pokemon require a high level of friendship to evolve. One of them, Eevee, require high friendship to evolve into Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon. In the games where Amie, a minigame where you could groom your pokemon to heal them of any effects after battle or just interact, feed, and pet them, was available Sylveon would require two levels of affection. Affection is even more powerful than the friendship stat because a pokemon is able to withstand and execute more things in battle because is loves you so much.

i hated frontier, i didnt like any of the characters, they seemd bland, the only girl was too girly for me (i like tomboys like sora and rika) but most of all, THEY DIDNT HAVE ACTUAL DIGIMON!! seriously, what made digimon diferent then most other series about kids with powers was the partner digimon and the little bit of a relationship they did have together and how that impacted the digievolution, what caused digievolution in frontier? "huuu, just beat up a bunch of digimon to get more digispirits or whatever" thats such a downgrade.

I loved the final "return to the digital world" arc, taking the fun silly world and showing it some time later with a darker dystopian twist is what makes the Narnia or Happy Potter series so compelling. And all the whacky characters from earlier episodes are now sacrificing themselves and dying onscreen to save the protagonists. I remember watching one scene when Mimi is making little crosses to memorialise the funny characters who just died to save them, and thinking she was on the verge of a genuine breakdown. I dont think a show being "dark" automatically makes it good, but in this show I loved the contrast. The kids have grown up a little and now the digital world isnt so innocent.
