The biggest issue I have with Tri is how uninterested all the characters seem to be regarding the problems around them. Most of the time they seem to be more interested in their own teenage problems and only bother to act when the bigger issue knocks at their doorsteps. Seriously, it takes all of their partners to get infested and the Digital World itself to get reseted for them to finally go there to see what is happening. Prior to that they just take Maki's words at face value and don't even notice four of their suppoosedly friends are missing for weeks. They make one token attempt when they see the Kaiser seems to be back, but that's it and they quickly go back to their lives when that fails. To be short, I think Tri seems to be more intrested in telling a slice of tife story with the original kids most of the time than actually developing its plot and that resulted in a problematic pacing in a series that doesn't seem to know where it wants to do or where to go.

In the original series the Digidestined team were always struggling with making solid plans. They just didn't always have enough information but in spite of that, they were always active in (at the very least) making baby steps in any direction. "Let's climb infinity mountain" "Let's figure out how to get our crests to work" "Let's try splitting up" "We need to find the eighth child but have no clues, lets try calling random kids and walk all over the city if we have to." Even if it was a step in the wrong direction like Tai's plan to get Agumon to ultimate level that led him to Dark digivolve you could at least see the logic in how they came up with that plan. I loved their trial and error process of strategizing. In Tri everyone is SO passive. Izzy is the only one who takes any initiative. Things just happen to them regardless of any choices they make, or they just wait for things to happen. It's so frustrating.

I am honestly surprised how bad Tri is. I dropped it 4 years ago after episode 1 of movie 2. I recently decided to watch it completely before reconsidering to watch the reboot of Digimon 2020 or Kizuna. Biggest Mistake. I can safely say I rather watch Fusion and it's terrible sequel than Tri again.

What pissed me off was at the very end when Kari was upset with Tai for making the decision to destroy meikomon, when in the third movie with Willis, she wasn’t afraid to help the team destroy Willis’s Digimon since the virus made him go insane. I also feel like the virus thing was cool but it has been played out before and maybe they could have connected the two together to make a good story.

The difference is that they knew Willis’s digimon would be reborn because they were in the digital world. Meicoomon was killed in the real world. Digimon killed in the real world aren’t reborn so I’m sure that’s where the hesitation in Tri came from.

What bugs me the most about adventure tri is that mimi has the chance to prevent all of this but she didn’t. If you don’t know what I mean I’ll explain: On lilymons debut episode she used her floral reef attack to cure a Digimon virus that made black tyranamon evil. At no point in adventure tri does Lilymon or Mimi decide to test this out.

Probably wouldnt work tbh. DarkTyranamomon's virus, although not explored in the anime, was said to be made via human hackers in the reference book. The virus in tri was more divine in nature.

It wouldn't have worked because it wasn't a formal virus, it was a remaining packet of data from Apocalymon that Yggdrasil somehow obtained and used in Nov 1999 to create Meicoomon to begin its master plan. Apocalymon isn't necessarily a digimon either, but an entity created by the regrets of digimon who died out in the evolutionary process. Apocalymon itself doesn't even need a physical form to exist. This was not something that Lillymon could have simply "cured" away with its powers.

Like I wanted to like Meiko and Meicoomon when they were introduced, but Tri handled them so poorly that I ended up hating them both. And your absolutely right, Mei and Meiccomon are the symptom, they're not the cause of Tri's problem. It's Tri trying to insert way too many storylines that are hard to link together with so few episodes/films that it doesn't work when they should've just picked two or three of those ideas to focus on. Also, the mistreatment done to the 02 cast is horrific, especially considering how TK and Kari were basically like "LA LA. We don't know why they've gone. LA LA. Who cares!"

You would think that after Act 1 ended with Omegamon and Alphamon fought to a draw, the 01 crew would look for the 02 crew, since they are needed for the most powerful Digimon they have access to.... (That's the fusion of Omegamon and Imperalmon Paladin Mode, BTW.)

Yeah, the black gears were a very physical things that the DigiDestined specifically could destroy, but this virus is actually infecting their internal code? Realistically, the plot is the black gears without the 'power increase' they gave, since no one bats an eye at destroying any of the infected digimon, except their own.

The sad fact is: Nostalgia sells. This ruined Digimon Tri. They could've invested more time into writing a good story but all they did is show us the original cast in school, it was boring. There could've been so much complexity if they went in depth about the disappearance of the 02 cast, and possibly even show them being lost in the digital world trying to find a way out. Digimon Tri was a waste of potential, unfortunately.

OddKidd i do believe they are doing a separate season for the 02 crew. Also... Did we watch the same OVA series? As far as moral conflicts, and choices went, Tri was far more complicated than 01. 01 was a case of Do this, beat the big bad, then go and do that to beat another big bad. Complexity never really hit until they got their crests in which the tamers had to face trials that put their core traits to the test. Even then that was still pretty straight forward. 02 is where things got weird and complicated. All in all Tri had its issues. All of which Billiam addresses and I agree with. But to say there is no complexity is so wrong. This is the series that puts everything they did to question. Forces some very cruel choices on them, and finishes off with a very bittersweet finish. Those core aspects were great about Tri. The execution.... Not so much. I really wish they had extended this a bit further and taken more time with things. It probabky would have been flawless if they did.

But then the shot is suddenly panned to everyone talking to each other over Izzy, who was still talking about this super important information (It was the same situation in the English Dub too). I'm like "what kind of editing is this? This didn't happen in the previous seasons. So why now is this happening?" This is super important information from Izzy, but apparently their conversation was more interesting than Izzy's. 😒

I'd say my greatest issues are 1. Meiko does nothing plot relevant during the entire show, except maybe the password at the very end. She is mostly just a walking talking plot device for Meicoomon. 2. Mediocre writing and pacing. I've seen worse, but there are still a lot of problems. The story feels rushed, written on the fly. The plot progression is all over the place, I guess they didn't really set any priorities for the narration.

To me the Mega Evolutions came out of left field and for the most part weren't memorable. When a Digimon gets a new Evolution, it should be a Stay-with-you moment. But there were no indication that a character fullfilled a Mega level condition and while the action was good it didn't give me any lasting impression. For example of a stay-with-you moment from Adventure: MetalGreymon's first appearence. No exciting battle. It didn't last for long. Tai and MetalGreymon just approached a powered-up Etemon and used just 1 attack. It wasn't badass. There was no badass fight. But it was memorable. It was satisfying. Heck, even the Armor Digi-Evolution were more hype. Yeah, Magnamon is too be expected, but there is stuff like Submarinemon or Flamedramon. There were hype moments.

The thing that annoyed me about the Digimon Emperor's return being Dark Gennai, was that, there was no reason for Dark Gennai to masquarade as the Emperor. It was literally done to hype the fans up as it played nothing for the story. Now if maybe, when the digital world was reset, the data from the Digimon Emperor resurfaced as it's own entity (as when Ken threw away his Emperor clothing it dispersed into data), then that could have been cool. Imagine? An 'old save file' of the Digimon Emperor, separate from Ken, genuinely hating the Adventure/02 kids and attempting to retake over the digital world, WHILE the 02 kids were missing, AND the other stuff that was going on? That would've been cool. Also, the fact that the 02 kids were defeated in silhouttes and not brought up again was weird. Why were they there without Kari and Tk? Why were they not surprised or in disbelief when they saw Ken as the Emperor? :/

I'm annoyed just at the fact that they made Gennai a villain. To me, in a way, Gennai is to Digimon as Yoda is to Star Wars. Imagine if Yoda story arc ended with Yoda going to the dark side and Luke having to kill him. That's absurd! Gennai going dark was just as absurd to me. I agree with you. I think what they should have done is something similar to the English Dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! did. They should have made it so that King Drasil somehow resurrected the dark side of Ken AKA The Digimon Kaiser/Emperor, not having a Dark Gennai wear the Digimon Emperor/Kaiser as a costume.

Man! I was excited when they had first came out, or at least when they announced new content; involving the OG crew. I remember getting at least the first 4 sets that came out, but it kept getting hard to keep up when the next set of dvd/blu ray would come out. So one thing leads to another, and the further the story kept going; it felt bland to a certain degree. I lost interest... Not that I didn't love Digimon, I still do. It's just, the story didn't compelled me to wanting to keep it going, so I'm left leaning on nostalgia; which can only take you but so far. Overall, I'm thankful for this review, so maybe I'm not totally by myself in this feeling lol.

There's a scene in 02 in which Jou ditches an important exam to go help Gomamon, and literally tells Iori that he would NEVER choose something as stupidly mundane as an exam over being with Gomamon. What happens in Tri? Jou is missing for the entirety of movie 1 and spends 90% of movie 2 purposefully ditching Gomamon, and he doesn't even do it for an exam, just because an exam is coming sometime at an unspecified future date and he apparently has to study 24 hours a day for it until it happens. That's how out of character these characters are. Taichi's conflict doesn't make sense because it's not like he's fighting because he wants to, he's trying to stop infected digimon from running wild and destroying the world, Yamato is set up to win the argument against Taichi and then the whole thing goes nowhere, Sora is completely devoid of a personality and her conflict with Piyomon feels grossly fabricated, Koshiro is just there, Mimi (Like Jou) is made to learn something she already knew by 02 and then promptly forgotten about, and Takeru and Hikari are characterized as horrible people who don't give a rat's ass about their supposed best friends (Like, I get it, everyone hates the 02 cast, but this isn't about that, it's about the series' established lore). I don't even mind Meiko because she, by virtue of being a new character, is the only one who doesn't feel grossly out of character, she's just annoying in a proto-01-Mimi kind of way because she's always crying about everything and never does anything of merit.

Tbf Joe's exams in tri have a lot more weight to them because that will determine what college he goes to and therefore his life (partially because that's how it works in Japan and partially because his end goal is doctor). It's not the same as ditching an exam in the first year of high school. Plus it's implied Joe wasn't failing his classes at that point in time. I believe the whole point of the movie is that upholding certain values as a kid is much easier than upholding them when faced with adult challenges. It's easy enough to voice a promise; it's a lot harder to uphold that promise.

I agree with most of your comment wholeheartedly, just conflicted about Jou. Like the others explained the japanese school system is harsher then others and I get that Jou is focusing on his studies as he is probably pretty fed up with always having to interrupt what he's doing to save the (digi)world and thereby never getting anything done, I think that has to be extremely frustrating, especially when you are already failing and having a hard time trying to fulfill your dreams (in his case becoming a doctor?). Seeing how the first movie went he might as well have thought that the others would manage without him, at least that was my impression of the situation when he was missing back then. Still the characters weren't really portrayed all that great (if at all) due to Meiko and Meicuumon, I really wish they would have focused on the original cast (Adventure 01) only.

Himekawa was a BRILLIANT idea for an antagonist. An old digidestined who lost her partner, became bitter and pushed her friend away when he couldn't offer her any answers, and then became so desperate to see her digimon again that she'd be willing to team up with the big main villain just for that chance? That's the exact kind of tragedy I could see potentially happening to any of the main cast. Not only that but her pushing Nishijima away tied in with the lesson that the main cast has to learn, that they are all at their strongest when they are all on the same page." I felt so let down that once her backstory was revealed, it didn't lead to anything. She wanders off and I guess died in the dark ocean? Her and Nishijima should have had a more hopeful and happier ending but Himakawa didn't even get a definitive conclusion.

Also I noticed something : if you make your Digimon battle a lot in the 1st Digimon virtual pet , he will become an evil Digimon , like skullgreymon that had his flesh completely removed because of too much battling 😨 but the second wave of Digimon , when the original creator of tamagotchi stopped working on it I believe , battling a lot was showed as something good : instead of hurting the Digimon , it trained him , and if you battle a lot , instead of battling " too much " and getting skullgreymon / virus Metalgreymon you get a friendly and very powerful Digimon . That's how the serie totally changed . Is this commentary too much ? Yes .

Tbh Digimon Adventure Tri has the same problem Legend of Korra had. They think that making a show more adult equals to making it 'darker' and edgier', without paying attention to character development and character interactions. It's thinking that they have to switch from character driven stories to plot driven stories while having no idea how to create plots that make sense. And also Tri was too in love with having 'plot twists' and 'shocking endings' then with anything else and it showed.

@@shadygradyredZ the only issues korra had due to the network was the airtime slots. nothing went wrong with production. the shit show korra is, is all thanks to bryke, and knowing the shit show lok is, I can't blame nick for slowly moving it to shittier and shittier air slots, and in the end taking it off the air and just uploading it to their website. the closest thing that went wrong with production was in the last season, they did the clip episode because of the budget nick gave them for that season. but that was just one episode. that and for whatever reason the animation studio was changed to another studio in s2, but that really only effected the animation, and it was changed back in s3. as far as the shitty writing goes for lok, that was all bryke.

This series was a big disappointment. They took away the essence of the show and made it another one of these teenage dramas on trend in anime. The biggest issue IMO is the treatment of Seraphimon. Patamon’s evolutions in the past have been more powerful than the others at the same level, even taking out two main villains. Instead of getting a big story arc leading to the evolution, it’s thrown in like a side-character add-on. Seraphimon is God-Level in the other series but gets treated like whatever in this one. Also, why did Magna Angemon have a tough time with Devimon? Seriously? Magna took out Piedmon with ease but had trouble with a champion? This series made no sense whatsoever and spat on the original.

The main problem of Tri is that it doesn't have a focus. It tries to be everything (adventure, further character development, conflict between characters, drama, romance, fanservice, you name it) and it doesn't excells at any of those. Lack of explanation are also affecting the whole series like why would Ordinemon still keep its Jogress form after Tailmon has been pulled out from inside its body?? How did the 02 kids ended up losing and imprisoned and why did everyone care more for girl joe instead of them? Why would Alphamon appears from time to time to fight Omegamon and Jesmon? Or as per why Yamato suddenly has interest in space? Not enough time or budget for those explanation i guess (but a scene where Yamato became chicken because he's weak at scary stories is very important). Also the "Mandatory Super Strong Ex-Machina Angel Form" Omegamon is so awful at every aspect, it makes me appreciate Imperialdramon Paladin Mode more. I would forgive the lack of action and below mediocre animation if they give me good story (not amazing, just make a good continuation from the original story) but in the end all i got was disappointment and a bad aftertaste. I'd watch Appli Monster compared to Tri any day.

@Rein Tiberius Omegamon vs Alphamon fight in the first episode are a huge fanservice moment. Everyone wanted that fight to happen and i have to admit, the fight itself was pretty good. But there aren't any reasons why both digimon should fight with each other and Tri never actually explains why the fight happened in the first place. Alphamon in Tri is just a character with no personality or traits that the writer put just because they knew fans would be heads over heels seeing Alphamon outside digimon's game universe, but never gives a damn about developing the character itself. So basically, he's a fanservice character.

Ordinemon stayed Jogress form because it’s not an evolution; it’s an unnatural mutation. (I’m more pissed off at their apparent decision to pander to the furry fetishists. Even just one a**-shot of Ordinemon is _way_ too many.) Yamato’s wanting to become an astronaut because it’s set between 02’s epilogue. They really screwed themselves there. I’m going to throw the writers a bone and say that Alphamon’s involvement and the 02 kids’ will be explained in the sequel to Tri, which is confirmed to focus more on the 02 kids. As for everything else, I got nothing. It really feels like the writers hate 02 to the point of mean spiritedness to the G2 cast.

That fired back(unsurprisingly of course), so they tried to pander toward both fanbase by pretending to make 02 cast important in the "sequel", even tho from the trailer its clear enough that the movie is about Taichi and Agumon. In short, fuck Toei, i'm done with Digimon series. Good thing the Digimon games are still fine for most part.

The problem of Digimon Tri was that it was too lazy. It was fun to see where the characters I grew up would be, but the writers and animators were just so lazy. Like, I suspect one reason why we didn't see the 02 kids in the last movie was because they were too lazy to actually make new designs for them.

A definition for "Mary Sue" that I really like is, that it's not about the character's flawlessness, beauty, skill, talent, etc., but about the other characters' lives revolving around them. If the main villain wants the character dead because he's jealous, cannot comprehend this much goodness, or for no good reason at all, if the stern experienced mercenary character lies awake at night wondering about the character's well-being, if the hot elven prince(ss) falls in love with the character despite being wayyyy out of their league, if the team of superheroes collectively decide to basically assume a supporting role for the character to play the main part in spite of th character not being more qualified, if the character can mess up and all the other characters go "Awww, that's our [name]", then the character is a Mary Sue.

Movie 3 was my personal favorite especially because of the scene with Patamon and Takeru and the scene when HKabuterimon was carrying everyone back into the reset. I'll be the first to say, I like Meiko, but you do raise many valid issues regarding her and tri. as a whole. The concept behind Meiko sounds interesting on paper: A girl unused to the battles is thrust into it and has to quickly adapt, only for her partner to become a threat and needs to gain the resolve to admit the partner needs to be put down. The concept is fine..... But the execution fell flat. Like a lot of things in tri. to be honest. tri. is somehow both slow and rushed at the same time. But since I'm focusing only on Meiko, back on track. Meiko was promoted in the trailers for the very first movie, but when you watch it, she gets about 10 minutes of screen time. The trailers gave her this mysterious vibe, showing her standing under the bridge with her glasses shining. We don't get a scene like that. The first movie is ultimately where the issues start. There is so much negative space that could be removed and be used to fit both plot and character. Introduce Meiko from the beginning but have her as the shy girl at school, and have Mimi try to be her first friend, dragging her around to get to know her. Then, have Meicoomon running around in the background right before the attack by the Kuwagamon, and show a reaction shot from Meiko. This would build a hint of suspicion: Why did we see her? Is she involved? Did the strange cat summon Kuwagamon? Then, instead of having them run into her trying to look for the distortions, have Mimi try to invite her and get turned down, only to show up looking for Meicoomon. That not only shows her more but illustrates she is at the center of the plot. And instead of having the others openly welcome her, have them question her about whats going on. The second movie needs the opposite though by removing her scenes. Remove the Hot Springs section and replace it by following up where they first left off. Give Meiko's backstory and her finding Meicoomon here, and lead Izzy to try and contact Gennai. Then, when Ogremon shows up, have Mimi send Meiko away to get the others. When Ogremon shows up at night, have Izzy secretely watching while trying to find out more after thinking they're being left in the dark, and realize that where Ogremon showed up is close to where Meiko lives. This adds an element of distrust since it comes across as Meiko and Meicoomon being the cause of the infected digimon. When the Mysterious Man shows up, leave him looking like Gennai and have it be Alphamon instead of Imperialdramon. This way not only do they become aware its the same enemy, but also realize that something darker in going on, and rather than just randomly trust Maki and Daigo, they are forced into trusting them without Gennai. Even the 02 kids problem could be addressed with a single line. Have Maki claim they were working together. This makes it so the group considers trusting Maki seeing as how the 02 kids trusted her, but also makes it easier for the idea that Maki's half-assed line to Matt worked to be believable, since she'd already fed them other lies. tri. wanted to have a plot, but got sidetracked by wanting to include teen drama and relationship building, at the cost of the plot. While I like Meiko on her own, I will admit, she could have been written better, and seeing as how she is directly related to the plot, the plot too could have been written better.

why weren't you the writer for these movies?? okay but seriously though XD i really do like Meiko and Meicoomon and what you said was really true, tri. was really just a mixed bag of wasted potential and it's kind of sad, i would've loved to see Meiko be given more screentime and characterization beyond just hanging out with Mimi (don't get me wrong, their relationship made me smile because of how sweet it was and how they inspired each other) and standing around feeling really guilty and depressed because of what happened to Meicoomon (a reasonable reaction but...like you said, tri was both rushed and slow - they rushed the reveal of Meicoomon's influence on other digimon and dragged out the entire arc about whether or not they'd try to find a way to bring her back or just straight up kill her) all of your suggestions really sound like a better film series in comparison to the actual tri. series and would've made me like Meiko a bit more too (and make me even more upset seeing Meicoomon lose control before saying goodbye and then dying - speaking of which; unpopular opinion but i really didn't think it was completely necessary to kill her off and could've been brought back just like Kokomon from the first movie but ehhh) tl;dr: i completely agree with you, like your suggestions and wish you wrote the movies instead and same i like Meiko too even though her character isn't written well

While I don't consider Meiko a mary sue, I DO consider her to be a weird dollar store bootleg of Hikari due to the fact her digimon is almost exactly the same as Tailmon. Actually no, mary sues are often like that because their creators are very self conscious and want a character that they think is nothing like them to feel better about themselves. Basically that's how they want to be, but not necessarily think they are like that. Growing up as a girl, I know that girls who even might appear like they have a high self image are actually struggling heavily with it.

They're somewhat related in that a lot of self-inserts tend to be Mary Sues for the exact reason you point out. But it's definitely possible for one to be without the other. Plenty of Mary Sues aren't Self-Inserts and plenty of Self-Inserts aren't Mary Sues. Instead, sometimes, Self-Inserts just take over a plot that wasn't originally made for them, while at the same time being so anti-Mary Sue to the point that it gets very annoying how incompetent they are. My prime example is Jaun Arc from RWBY. He was introduced as being a side character for the side team. He later ends up having more presence than the supposed actual protagonist Ruby, overshadows her character, but at the same time remains so incompetent that he trips over himself despite having well over a year of intense training and field experience. And despite denying it, he totally is a self-insert for his voice actor.

Tri had so many issues of a sequel and plenty of them were discussed here. But for me the biggest thing was...the characters felt stupid. This is happening a bit after the 02 season sure. But for some reason for the vast majority of the films...no one cares about not being able to find or contact the 02 cast. I didn't even like the 02 season compared to the original show, but I was constantly thrown off by how characters were behaving. Kari and TK were literally part of both teams and they didn't give a damn for most of the films. Then you just have smaller complaints. The digimon barely talked once they hit champion level or higher. Forget calling out attacks as they launched them, they were barely even speaking. I never got the impression of the digimon going feral as they evolved. Minus the incident with SkullGreymon. Maybe they wanted to save on paying voice actors. I honestly didn't mind Meiko. I feel the anger towards her is the writers having the nerve to add a new digi-destined to the main cast at this point. You know like they had the nerve to make Kari a digidestined part way through the original series...Those monsters! Yeah a lot of the story revolves around her. Someone new interrupting the status quo is going to probably have a good amount of plot revolving around her. Meicoomon was at the core of all this, so of course Meiko being the partner in this case is going to get screentime. It wasn't great. They introduced way too many new concepts, were clumsy in handling them, and didn't have the characters acting believably. The fight with "Ken" and Imperialdramon being one of the worst angles. This is your friend. Why the heck aren't Kari and TK freaking out? Why isn't fighting Imperialdramon to the death not a major issue? They survived major events in the 02 season because of that specific digimon. But they don't seem to be wondering what is going on or....you know wondering where the heck Davis is! I'm glad you can walk away with this with optimism though. For me..it was a huge waste. I'd have been happier rewatching the old series with Tri simply not existing. It existing brings down the original series a bit. Not a ton, but a bit. And I have no optimism for whatever sequel they've got coming next. Let Digimon Adventure rest Toei, you greedy corporate monsters. What they did with Tri shows that they have no idea what they are doing with this franchise.

Tri reminds me why respecting the format you are working on is important. When you work on an episodic series, you go through all the parts of a story in less time, so a film divided in episodes will have little going on in one episode and twists and pay offs only hapening later and that makes for a jumbled mess. Another one that has this problem is Godzilla: Monster Planet, which was planned as an series and was compressed into a movie. The latest volumes of RWBY suffer from the same problem as they are written as films and divided into a series.

I honestly think the 3rd film or Confession which ever you want to call it, was pretty damn emotional to be honest. Just seeing the partner digimon get infected one by one and then fighting one another and to the point were they ended up resetting the digital world with there partners memories erased, i have to say it was gut wrenching to watch. And after that film (Loss) i was already feeling bad between Sora and Biyomon, because all Sora wanted was to reconnect with Biyomon. I am a little bummed out that 02 characters didnt do much in the films, i was really hoping to see there new updated character models. After doing some thinking about how the 02 characters got taken down, i might be the fact there digimon partners were all infected and they were all completely banged up, thats why Imperialdralmon showed up in the 2nd film. Its also possible that The good Gennei might've been the one that put all 4 of 02 characters into Cryostasis and then somehow he got into the Cryo pod as well. Which why they show 5 silhouettes characters in the cyro pods when Tai sees them all. It was kind of weird that they never really did added anything about them disappearing especially for Kari and T.K who were apart there team. Another thing i find weird about T.K and Kari is that they both carry their 02 D3 devices so why couldn't they use either one of them to transport to the digital world. Another thing too is where T.K and Kari Digi eggs for Patamon and Gatomon or maybe they just didn't have those other devices where the digi egg are stored in.

Not gonna lie.... I had been genuinely hoping that Meicoomon was possibly a test for the X-antibody that homeostasis made to try and bring about peace after discovering Yggdrasil's plan to effectively kill most of the digimon, and the antibody was making her a little crazy. But NOPE!!!!! I even did a minor rewrite of how I felt the ending would've been better: When Meiko enters the password, allow it to bring back Gatomon and Meicoomon. Meicoomon would be free from the piece of Apocalymon inside her, however, Ordinemon is now her own sentience. To battle Ordinemon, gatomon digivolves to Ophanimon (remember that Magnadramon only happened when gatomon didn't have her tail ring). Meicoomon wanta to fight back and redeem herself, finally digevolving into her true mega form, Rasielmon, fulfilling the prophesy from part 2. When Omnimon arrives, the power isn't enough. At that moment, a blast hits Ordinemon, and its here that we find out the 02 kids made it back in time and are there to help. The light of the 13 Digivices power up Omnimon amd this takes out Ordinemon. But this is just how I would've done it.

My biggest issue with tri was Meiko... just Meiko, she's such an OC insert it hurts, she never makes up her own mind unless someone else makes it for her, nobody is allowed to get angry with her, everyone loves her off the bat despite everything that's happening, and her three personality traits are nervous, quiet and clumsy... I personally couldn't give a flying fook who she's shipped with, I just can't watch scenes with her in it without wanting to rip out my hair in frustration that the creators put such an annoying character as the center of the plot while completely leaving out the 02 kids. I'm not saying the series should have been completely different, but instead of the shy awkward glasses girl archetype that has been done to death, instead they should have made her headstrong, opinionated and in denial that her digimon could be doing such things, until it happens right in front of her and she can no longer deny it. Instead of having her just go along and become immediate friends with them, it would have been much more interesting if after they save her the first time, she avoids them as much as possible, not to protect herself, but to protect their digimon from her own, that would at least add a layer or two to her character. Instead of Mimi dragging her around like a living doll, have Mimi break down her walls of defense, attack her with friendship until she starts to open up, then let them all become friends during the school festival, that way right as everyone is finally getting along and all seems well, Meicoomon kills leomon. Instead of having her entire develoupment revolve around whether she could kill kill her digimon or not, Meiko has to come to the realisation that she's known Meicoomon has been a danger for years, either from a scar she might have or through flashbacks of other digimon turning evil after long time exposure to Meicoomon, maybe even show that the reason she's so closed off is because she had digidestined friends who all lost their digimon because of her. It's not like it would take much to explain such a thing, either she could sit down and tell Mimi for a heart to heart or tell Izzy about it to gather information. Hell it could even open up a chance to see the rare instance where TK goes for nicest guy ever to terrifying, have him yell at her for not doing something sooner as his own digimon is infected and it's her fault. Have Mimi and some others try to defend her, but have others either vocally or silently be on TK's side, at least one or two on both. This way there could be turmoil in the group. Digimon was a big part of my childhood, and while I was ecstatic when Tri was announced, it was disheartening to find that the whole thing was ruined by a poorly written character. I agree with you. Digimon Tri feels like a it tries hard to dig up that nostalgia and it fails in many points of the 6 films. I didn't really mind Meiko-character because as you said the character was a victim of bad writing. The overall randomness and instability in the films also bothered me. What I mean is this: They showed the Dark Masters in the flashback scenes with the original DigiDestined's. That was very cool and I was excited with all this. Then Meichoomon just randomly resurrects Machinedramon with no rhyme or reason. Same thing happened with Devimon in the last film where he just randomly appears. It was cool to see them of course but it left me feeling like they just randomly dug up characters to keep people interested in the confusing and random plot and boring and shallow depictions of previously very interesting main characters. I felt like if they're gonna do that, they need to put a lot more of those characters into the films and the first two films hardly used that variety of Digimon from the original series to the full potential. In the end I felt like I took a trip with nostalgia and half way through the nostalgia left me. There were still lots of cool moments, the new evolutions were great, the final angel monster was really cool and I liked the infecting virus idea a lot. Still for 6 movies worth of run time, much of it was wasted in mediocre content and a plot that felt like it was started by one crew and ended with completely different crew in the end.

I can tell you Tri has other problems besides the ones listed here, more enrooted within the franchise than the anime itself. The power scaling. Do you remember that one scene in adventure where Etemon manhandled three adult digimon in spite of being only a level above them? Well, here we have Rookie-level digimon able to use their puny attacks to stop Mega-level digimon attacks and not the combined force of them either, just one vs one. There's other details such as Alphamon having the capacity of wrecking Omegamon to the kingdoms to come, but they're nowhere near the level of absurdity of a Puppy Howl blocking a Mugen Cannon. Speaking of Alphamon, however... Character Derrailment. -According to the Digimon Reference Book: Alphamon is the equivalent of a deterrent force, someone who is not present unless the situation is extremely dire. The only reason he appears to wrestle with Omegamon is because it sells. -It's sad when the only character trait you're given is taken away with no explaination, and so... Hackmon. Again, in accordance with the Digimon Reference Book: Hackmon's dream is to become a Royal Knight and serve under Yggdrassil like Gankoomon, his mentor, does. So why in the seven circles of hell is he working AGAINST Yggdrassil and the Royal Knights? That at least needs an explaination, but we got nothing.

Yggdrasil went crazy and was "deactivated". Homeostasis was created to replace Yggdrasil and is now technically the "God" of the digital world which is why Hackmon serves Homeostasis. And all the Royal Knights should be serving Homeostasis at this point. Then Yggdrasil was revived and is still crazy. And yes everything regarding both of them as shown in Tri is shit. This was THE first time that the characters of Homeostasis and Yggdrasil both existed at the same time. It should have been epic as hell and instead it's boring and barely explained.

We can only put so much weight on the Reference Book, really; it's very rare that any given series necessarily holds to what was written there, after all. Beelzebumon is one of the Demon Lords but is only an antagonist for half of one of his appearances, and that's before we get to the number of Royal Knights who ended up being allies/partner Digimon, or even independent antagonists like in Frontier. Besides, there are a number of entries in the Reference Book that refer to the personality of "this Digimon" as an individual, even when later series recycle the same one as background filler; hell, there was a random Dukemon as a hapless citizen in the background of a Frontier episode, not long before two ROYAL KNIGHTS became major antagonists. I've simply come to the conclusion that what's in the Reference Book is only absolute to _one_ canon (most likely the manga), much as Tamers and Frontier depart from the concept of Yggdrasil completely, or Tamers expressly stating Digimon lack genders while every other canon ignored that.

Rewatching this video. Regarding Matt's choice of career - everyone remembers Matt and his harmonica. And my memory's not clear enough to be certain, but I really associate this with the image of looking up at the night sky while playing. I could see that as an angle to build up a strong appreciation for the stars. So if they were to try to write it better, I'd have taken that. Maybe in '02 when we see his band, show off some celestial imagery in the songs. And maybe show a growing wanderlust in him - all that time traversing the Digital World really stuck with him. And then he could spend some time traveling with his band - and found it not enough for his wanderlust. Where to go from there? Back to college, for a career as an astronaut.

Tri was a mess. They messed up Meicoomon, not even showing us her true mega once. They had Omnimon finish things when it wasn't even his place. It should have fell to TK, Meico, and Kari, not Matt and Tai. It should have been a three way DNA digivolution between Magnadramon/Ophanimon, Seraphimon, and Rasielmon, not Omnimon. The who thing about the real world being rebooted was just stupid. Alphamon and JESmon act completely contrary to themselves, they made Homeostasis seem like a complete uncaring jerk. And Meico was stupid. She could have told Izzy that Meicoomon was perhaps the source of the virus. That way they could isolate her in that server, extract the virus, and try to make a vaccine from it. It could still end up horribly wrong, but at least she went and actually tried something instead of crying the entire time.

Yggdrasil was a Digimon supremacist and hated humans. Meiko was actually not sure to begin with since she only knew from her father that Meicoomon was a special Digimon, but did not know the details. Telling Koshiro/Izzy that would have meant ratting out her own partner Digimon (which is also her best friend) and that they possibly had to fight/hurt Meicoomon. It was the same reason why Takeru/TK did not tell about Patamon's infection to others since he did not want others to fight/hurt Patamon.

I just finished watching Digimon Tri recently. I had seen the first 2 movies when they came out, but I thought they were SO BAD and I love Digimon adventure and 2.0 so much that I was scared to continue with TRI and ruin that great oportunity of watching my favorite characters again. But I gathered the courage amd watched the whole thing. I'm not gonna lie, Butterfly is so much FEELS that it kind of eases the pain. I also bought into Taichi's conflict at the start of the movie, and I like some of the filler episodes because I considered the kids would have missed their partners so much that they sure would have want to spend some time together but then it's offensive to put filler episodes when the movies leave so many parts of the plot without resolution. The thing I hate the most from ep. 1 onwads, and the thing that in my eyes completely takes all credit of this series is the gross ignoring of the Digi02 kids.WHY did the creators of this sequel thought it was ok? However, I read that the people producing this sequel wasn't part of the team producing Dig. Adventures and 02 and then that explains why it portraits so horribly the Digimon story. It's just a fanfic with budget (well, some budget at least). Also, I hated the fanservice with Hikari and Takeru at the end. They're not cannon, don't give me false hopes 😢

A Mary Sue character is often defined as a character with very little depth to them that a story ends up centered around. Meiko and Meicoomon didn't really have a lot of interesting traits or development aside from being plot devices, but most of the story is written around them, so they do fit the bill in that sense.

Meiko should've been written differently, she just didn't fit as a character in the Digimon-verse. But otherwise she feels so useless she could be written out and Meicoomon could just be replaced with a different Digimon and/or went rogue and it'd most likely stay the same. Except there'd be more character development with the original DigiDestined, which is what we were looking forward to most, and we still ended up disappointed.

+Kumori Garasu The story actually would not work without Meiko since the entire point of the kids not defeating/killing Meicoomon from the very beginning was because it was a partner Digimon of someone they know, i.e. one of them. There would not be a reason to not kill Meicoomon from the very beginning, especially since it threatened the world and the kids had killed unpartnered, threatening Digimon before.

That's why I'm glad I got into after 02 when Tamers started. I didn't watch Frontier it was boring and I use to think that Frontier was before Tamers. So, I wasn't invested in Tri and was on the fence about watching or not, and I decided to not watch, after learning what happened in 02, and that no retcon of 02 was coming, so why watch? I learned what happened in 02 thanks to Billiam's retrospective of Digimon, because I didn't know what happened because I never completely watched the 1st, 02, or Frontier series. I liked the rest of the series and yes DAT's and Fusion. I just didn't get see all the movies or the rest of Fusion, no dub. I wonder did people go into watching Tri, and hoping for a retcon, only to get disappointed. Or did Tri trick people into the premise of a retcon happening with marketing?

IMO the really could have fixed the 02 character missing problem by setting the story during the character's summer vacation. they could have just written it off by saying that the 02 digidestined went on vacation out of the country and could not help the original digidestined with the problem and then the writers would only have to write about how the original digidestined emotionally deal with fighting Ken

Tri is taking an old, popular anime and trying to make it "adult" by overloading emotional, tearjerky moments and "seriously artistic" aesthetics... completely ignoring what made first season of Digimon so special. Characters feel shallow and emotionless and most drama is forced and very unrealistic in the sense of human feelings. Add to that complete silence about 02 just to separate it more from the feeling and continuity of Adventures and you have the actual problem - Digimon Tri is continuation of the story just on the surface, for the sake of making continuation and not because there was need to say something more. A series made because there's anniversary and company decided that they need an anniversary thing...

That happening right away and it taking to movie 6 to see their silhouettes and hearing from Izzy what happened to them (not showing them at all) is def a big part of why I can't enjoy this film.

The “under-reactions” you’re talking about is a symptom of the more “realistic style of anime that has dominated the 2010s. 90s anime had big exaggerated reactions that fully utilized the possibilities of animation, but a lot of modern anime subdue facial expressions so much they might as well just be live action, especially if it’s a slice-of-life story. Which is ironic since, characterization-wise, modern anime characters behave far more over the top than those in the 90s. Ever since the early 2000s, there's been a shift in how characters speak and act. They gradually became more and more melodramatic, with their over the top reactions being expressed through constant screaming rather than through visual communication (that or it's the opposite extreme where they're just perpetually reserved and/or shy). They've become anime stereotypes. It's becoming rarer to find anime characters that actually talk and behave like human beings nowadays.

A lot of anime predating the aughts had characters behave and speak in a relatively more grounded manner, as well as having their actors/actresses' deliveries be more realistic unless a scene or a whole show was intentionally comical and over the top. However, as anime aimed at the shonen/shojo demographic became more and more prevalent and popular, a lot of the way characters act gradually became more and more vibrant and exaggerated, with a lot of overly passionate (or overly reserved if they're the opposite extreme), wishy-washy dialogue and having their VAs directed to express said passionate behavior frequently (worth noting I'm referring to original VAs here, since dubs are all over the map when it comes to this). It's a kind of change that helped to fit the exciting nature of certain series, and has become the norm in most anime these days. It's not necessarily always a bad change (barring the series that reduces their characters to one-dimensional stock anime tropes), I'm just noting it as something that happened, and pointing out how funny it is that the cartoon-y reaction faces the top commenter is referring to got more and more understated over time in spite of character behavior becoming less subtle over the years. I've grown up with a lot of anime, so it's easier to see this change occur over the course of 20 years.

I was asking more of a rhetorical question, I was highlighting how nonsensical your comment was. This is less nonsensical(and I can at least get what you're saying), but still look at this. You claim that Anime aimed at the Shonen audience became more prevalent and popular, where did you even come up with that because it's flat out wrong, that's been the prevalent and popular demographic since the 60s. You are not noting anything that actually happened, you've just spewed a lot vague criticism. All I can pick out is that characters were more grounded and they were realistic. And then and then they became vibrant and exaggerated, and some other stuff. But its not, the average Anime character now, is no less cartoony that something from 20 years ago, and a character in a more serious show is no less realistic and grounded than one in the same type of show 20 years ago. From your statement you've been watching it for the around as long as I have. I notice that those cartoon-y reactions; face faults, sweat beads, falling over in a single frame etc were more a product of the 90s AND 00s. Which puts those two time periods closer together.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one whose enthusiasm for this series started to peter out as the movies got released. I agree that Meiko doesn't exactly fit the definition of a Mary Sue and it's more of a symptom of the other issues with Tri however a lot of things involving her seem very Mary Sue-ish which I point out in my most recent video. All those tropes just end up making the series feel like a bad fan fic to me. I also have to disagree with you on the point that the reboot didn't effect the personalities of the digimon, which it shouldn't have anyways. The reboot changed the personality of Biyomon from a kind and friendly digimon to a cold hearted bitch for the only explainable purpose of force conflict for Sora. My biggest complaint is how the season 2 characters got snubbed throughout the series and how their supposed friends didn't really seem concern with them missing. They tried the one time to go to Ken's house but were like, "no one's home, oh well!" I have to agree with you on the explored elements of lore, especially with the past digidestined. I just don't like their fate in this movie. I think Maki should have eventually realized her mistake and redeemed herself somehow but apparently having her drown in the dark ocean in her despair was good enough for the writes which was disappointing. I think they could have done a better job a differentiating Homestasis and Ygdrails just bit but at least we got to indirectly see more of them. I'm hoping Last Evolution will be good...when we get to see it here in the States.

Yeah, after they finish that new Digimon Adventure anime anniversary movie in 2019 I hope they never touch any version of Adventure again for the same reason I think Pokémon is bringing back Kanto too much. Maybe the new movie will do a good job and make me want more Adventure though, but I want another new universe added to the Digimon franchise. I feel more invested in the new game Digimon Survive than the new movie.

tri is the most disappointing and insulting garbage i've seen in years. They tried so hard to cash in on nostlgia, putting every single thing fans would expect in, dark ocean, royal knights, wizardmon, you name it but nothing had purpose there, nothing felt genuine. Just ask yourself why the hell gennai needed to dress up as Digi-Emperor, they wanted to show him in the trailers but they already wrote out the 02 kids because nobody likes them so they half assed the entire thing. The pasing is too slow, focusing on "character developement" the kids either already went through, going totally against what we know about them or just being very boring. My favourite was Joe acting like a complete asshole because he want to study instead of saving the world, even though everyone actually supported this dumb decision. It felt at times like the writing staff was ashamed to write for license known for fights and adventure and felt the need to cut all of it to seem more adult (just like the sexual harrasment, good job, very adult). Even when the finally go to the Digiworld they picnick for like half an hour screentime. The drama was pretty weak, some new girl coming in having trouble and instead of making me symphatize the movie just makes every other character tell me how sad it is. I didn't care for her, nor did i care for the original cast when they only acted as tools to support her. The animation was around passable... for TV Anime maybe. The original show wasn't anything either really, but the short movies always looked pretty great. now we have 6 internationally realesed and advertised movies of an established franchise that will make money regardless and apparently they didn't change the budget after deciding for the movie format. I mean the way it's structured it's basically no movie, but 6 episodes won't bring seats in theatres so we they just called it a movie because they can make money out of it, basically the same exact shit like the western release of the "first" movie they butchered out of 3 short movies to make money, except this time you can't blame it on localization. The music was lame as shit, they have a perfectly fine soundtrack to work with but they fucked that up too. Can't believe how they showed the digivolve sequence that much without proper music, also, just playing 20 different versions of butterfly in the last part doesn't count as soundtrack, this mad eme think they want me to hate this song too. It played like 5 times full during the runtime, + every intro for each episode (putting 6 OPs in 1 movie, good job) and ED. While we're at digivolution, i know it's a smaller thing, but they always totaly killed the hype for the new mega forms. They base the entire poster on them only to show Campion + Ultimate sequences that look the exact same as the mega, not that the 3D (looking just as bad as 20 years ago somehow) was impressive anyway, but showing the same thign 3 times and expecting me to be hyped the last time is pretty stupid, not to mention how they showed up to 3 ones at the same time or how the pathetic fight scenes took half the time of the sequence. Also they just refused to used to warp digivolution to save time, not onyl is this cheaper then the cheap stuff the original show pulled, but fighting against a mega with champion just seems stupid if you could go mega instead. The powerlevels were also pretty fucked at times, like Devimon onehitting Magnaangemon, probably the most overpowered Ultimate, or getting beat up like nothing from ordinemon on megalevel, but standing a chance on champion an ultimate somehow. Call me an idiot, but i think the way the plot handled the actual conflict was pretty confusing, wouldn't suprise me if the casual viewer couldn't tell me who Homeostasis and Yggdrasil even are. The way both didn't even show up made the story feel pretty filler-ish too. Basically felt like the 02 movie again with all the deeplore they could force in, but to be fair, i didn't really care that much after the 4th movie anyway. tl;dr: this movie got me the most hyped and the most disappointed in years, it stinks on every level and just uses the nostalgic license and the cheapest fanservice to push out their badly produced product. It took a lot of moments everyone waited for, pushed them in our faces and threw them away, probably never to be seen. I don't care if you liked it, go have fun without me, if you tell me it's better than nothing i disagree.

While Mako is not by definition a "Mary-Sue", the term itself is far from being a buzzword and if used correctly can be a legitimate criticism of a character. Watch Terrible Writing Advice's on it. I think what most people find jarring about Mako is how quickly and effortlessly the group treats her as one of them instead of just someone the group is helping out.

Tentomons movie was by far my favourite part of tri, guess im just a sucker for the whole "fighting your mindcontrolled friends" trope. Sadly the whole virus thing got just thrown out the window after that. Also not sure when Meiko ever wasnt a depressed mess of a character, but I guess it was just me not noticing because she is so quiet and passive when she isnt depressed. I feel like if she had been a more happy/outgoing character she wouldve had a better shot of integrating into the digidestined, but as it stands she kinda just went along with everything without ever doing anything of her own. Though the others also were a lot more stoic and quiet most of the movies and didnt really do anything to improve meiko.

Yes, but she still doesnt do anything without being pushed to do it by the other characters. She doesnt do anything because she wants to, which makes it hard to care about her when she gets introduced 2 seasons late into the plot. She couldve been fine as a character if she had showed up in 01 and developed together with the rest similar to how Joe and Mimi turned out fine. Tri really needed a driving force and Mei shouldve been exactly that, befriend the digidestined and get them to help you save your digimon. The way it turned out was more like the digidestined did all the work for 4-5 movies till Mei finally resolved to take action of her own. They basically read her mind and saved her digimon while mei was feeling sorry for herself and everyone else. If instead she had been an outgoing character she couldve been reckless and pushed the others along and maybe even clashed with matt and tai a bit all while actively establishing herself as a real character without overrelying on everyone else to do everything.

I just finished tri a week ago and I have a lot of problems with it, but my biggest is that the movie very much has a plot, themes it was to stick to, but changes the characters in ways to make it happen, that makes no since. I am going to bring up two things. I am going on the english dub and names with bring up 02 and the other kids, but I feel it might stand here. As well as point out why the movie is so flawed, and why it did what it did to remove some things to make it work. Davis's sister Jun would so go to Mat or Tai and demand answers on what happened to her brother. Sure she messed with him, but you know if she was told to keep it hush hush she would just go to one of the digi kids from her grade and talk to them face to face to get answers on her missing brother. Which would lead to all the digi kids going to the agents and going, "We where told Davis is missing and you are trying to cover it up. What is going on?" Plus odd that Kari or TK don't care about the 02 kids, since they spend so much time with them and as you said go to school with them. Like? THEY WOULD SO CARE IF THEY WENT MISSING OR HAVEN'T HEARD FROM THEM! Second I found it so odd that Izzy didn't ask to see Maiko's digivice sooner. He did this with Davis's really early on and him looking at it in the end of the movie shows they really did dumb down his character. Lastly the line, "There are things you notice as a kid you don't see as a adult, but when you are a adult you don't see things as a kid anymore." Kinda felt like it was saying why the characters where just doing what they are doing, but it coming across as missing the point. I am sorry you say that when you realize how dark Ken's backstory is. Not you trying to figure out how to fight a threat. On a positive note, I got back into digimon weeks ago, and I am on the hype train hard, since the survive game is finally coming out! It all started with me seeing Digimon Ghost Game, and I love everything about it. So much so that I was looking up digimon things on tumblr and twitter. As I did I got spoiled about a digimon in Tri being in ghost game, and stopped watching it to look at Tri for context. Was it worth it? I feel it was. I like Maiko and her digimon, and I felt Maiko should have been written better, but I like her. She is on the tier of, "Guilty pleasure" digimon characters I have. Her only flaw is that they didn't develop her better. Other then that her feelings and struggles are good, but wasn't handled well by the movie.

Digimon Tri feels too... Japanese. Digimon always felt kind of worldly, you know? You had parts of the city based on San Francisco, Tokyo, and Paris, some of the characters dressed like they were from South America, some characters had families with traits that were distinctly English, or Japanese, or American... Some of these were products of localization (Matt for example), but most of it wasn't due to editing or dub changes. Then Digimon Tri comes in and is just... Nippon-centric. The animation style is stock standard for Japanese slice of life anime. School festivals are a distinctly Japanese thing. Becoming trendy and fashion conscious in the way Tri displays it is distinctly Japanese. The classroom layouts are distinctly Japanese. _Being so detrimentally focused on highschool to the point of tunnel vision and acting like you die when you graduate is distinctly Japanese._ I mean, Meiko is straight up a Japanese fill in character. She uses a stock template design animators throw together for background characters. She is solely a product of anime and could not exist in her role or with her character design in any other medium. This retraction into the the mannerisms, settings, and tropes familiar to the country where it originated really hurts Digimon Tri. It just feels exclusionary. And I feel that's one reason why Tri bombed so hard.

What. Digimon has always been Japanese-centric since Adventure. Any international scenes only happened in 02 and past Tamers they toned it down a little but its always been there. What you described has to do with high school slice of life cliche, not the Japan aspect.

Honestly, I liked very much tri. for being japanese-centred. To be exact, original Adventure and 02 were profoundly japanese as well, so I don't really feel any exclusion

My biggest problem with Tri is just that I can't tell who is who, especially since I'm used to the dubs of the older stuff. They don't act the same, look the same, or sound the same. So, I struggle the relate. I am happy Digimon is a thing again, though. I'm just sticking to the video games for now.

To be honest, the issue was not so much the storyline, it was was how it was executed. The story should have been longer,allowing them to flesh out the characters more. They are teenagers, they are still growing as people. Studies show that the human mind does not fully developed until age 25 for males and 18 for for females. Other than that, I enjoyed it.
