Better than Tri at least. You had six movies and complete nothing for most of it culminating in a cliffhanger was the best you could come up with?
@sol97423 жыл бұрын
@@mariokarter13 Eh, I prefer tri. The six OVAs (they weren't really movies) in total would only reach halfway (around 25 episodes) of a proper season (usually 50+ episodes). Adventure 2020 had way longer time (67 episodes) and also managed to complete nothing for most of it. In tri, at least each of the kids was given character development. The main focus was also clear - to save Meicoomon. But the context changed from literally saving it to metaphorically saving it from its suffering. What you called cliffhanger was not even one, but more like a sequel bait since that was not even what tri focused on. Adventure 2020 also had sequel bait in its last episode. Adventure 2020 didn't even develop the characters despite having 60+ episodes, remaining the same as the moment they were introduced. The kids just defeat stronger and stronger villains (who mostly were just feral, non-talking, no personality villains), but defeating them didn't advance the story. The kids didn't get anything out of it - no new information, no character development; those were pretty much context-less battles. The only way for the plot to "move" was once the kids reached info dump episodes, which was like only 3 episodes out of 67. It doesn't help the fact the story lost much of its focus once Milleniummon, the supposed big bad talked from the beginning of the season, was underwhelmingly defeated in just 1 episode (while the previous context-less villains were stretched to 3 episodes each). Then we got this new unknown villain while just by then the show started to focus on the things the kids have been using all this time but nobody ever questioned (the crests). It just became even more meaningless since they finally resorted to Omegamon anyway (who have been appearing multiple times earlier), undermining the 20+ episodes of unlocking the Ultimate/Mega evolution.

I really hated the Tai pandering, but I think there's a fundamental missinterpretation going on in this show compared to the original. In the original, the group is all in all at once and them barely knowing each other while in a place they never even knew anything of was really something that created tension in the group. Not only they are lost, but their digimon are also pretty much useless guides. But that's not the dynamic in 2020. They came in a few a time, Izzy figured out bite sized goals very early on, they know where they are and they know it isn't impossible to go out, they kind of accept the things that they have to do a lot earlier. One show is imposed survival, the other is an accepted dangerous mission after like, episode 3. It makes sense there's less in fighting.

The overall show was hurt big time without a dedicated real world arc. The Myotismon/Vamdemon arc is when the original went from good to shaping my childhood. Seeing the kids interact with their parents, siblings and other people in the world while taking responsibility for protecting everyone when they could have just left everything to the adults they were now with. It made the show so much stronger beyond the generic "bad guy must be defeated" plot. 2020 is good in individual episodes, I didnt hate any episode on its own, but as a series it fell short.

Digimon 2020 did more for Digimon as a series than it did for itself: -Massively raising the bar for combat animation. You really hit it with the physicality of motion and metalgreymon got SO much love to make up for the original. -Creating memorable places, as if watching a folk tale happen in real time to leave behind locations with history. A volcano frozen in time as a tower of glass, a forest filled with new life but also ghosts of the past, a giant tree that is also the information hub of the continent. This is exactly what was missing from Cyber Sleuth and perhaps even the new digimon world games, and we got it. -An allstar cast of digimon both famous and obscure -Playing more loosely with digivolution rules to give so much flexibility for choreography. Mixing X and slide evolutions as loadout changes benefits the show AND merchandising without feeling forced. So it's just so disappointing that they failed at making the show good on its own. The chosen kids barely get to be people, the real world had so much screentime for so little meaningful impact, and they pulled out omnimon AT LEAST 1 too many times.

Sora straight up has an episode about a fight with Piyomon. "Leomon lives" what is this sacrilege?
@mariofan1ish3 жыл бұрын
I've said this on a few Digimon video before, but... "Great idea, lacking execution" is a microcosm of this entire franchise. Digimon World- an open world game (on the PS1 of all things) where you get a partner you care for and the way you raise it translates into what becomes of it. Great idea! Sadly the game is infamously obtuse and frustrating and it'd take well over a decade for a modernized version to be released.... in Japan only. Adventure 02- a sequel to the popular series with better animation, following a new set of kids with new, odd world mechanics and keeping tabs on the previous cast. Good idea, but 02 is also known for the absolute trainwreck its plot ended up as with things just being tossed in and forgotten, and the epilogue that, again, took decades to even try justifying in the end scenes of Last Evolution. Frontier- A series where they cut down the total cast number by a huge margin by making the kids themselves become Digimon. While controversial, this could actually work, as the lower cast number means you can now put more focus into the quality of each character. Didn't really happen, though, so now Frontier exists as the entirely mediocre black sheep of the family. Data Squad has a cast that's full of young adults working for an agency that handles Digimon-related incidents. This is actually a neat idea and could actually work for both an overarching plot and a few monster-of-the-week side plots. But the cast ended up being bland and the relationships not well developed. The Cyber Sleuth games were good, but still had issues regarding plot and, honestly, look low-budget even for Vita titles. Next Order was just as good but suffered from less-than-stellar writing and the same lack of budget- which is odd because it's the only recent Digimon game with an actual dub, and it's a fine dub too. And how about that new fitness watch? As you work out, your Digimon gets stronger too. That's AMAZING! Stupendous idea! The thing's strap is made out of flimsy plastic, is very small, and earlier versions had trouble reading the vitals of people with 'darker skin'. Oops.

I left Fusion out because I personally think it wasn't a good idea from the start. Xros Wars 2 was literally shat out just to fill a time slot Toei didn't want to lose and they had nothing better to use, and to push more toys. This season had a lot of great elements, but also could've used some improvements. Mimi was easily one of the best parts of this reboot considering her appreciation for her grandfather's philosophies and how she used them to benefit the digimon. Some of the battles were pretty entertaining with the upgraded animation, outstanding fighting skills, and high stake confrontations with the main villains. Plus, there were plenty of cute moments between some of the characters, especially regarding Mimi and Kari. Even some of the new songs were delightful to listen to. Although, I still wish they did a better job juggling the various plot elements and characters. The real world didn't get as involved with the story as it should've and there were so many episodes or moments that dragged on for so long that I got bored with the show at times. Not to mention that some of the Mega-level episodes acted more like something that would happen earlier in the season, as in being more low-key stories rather than something that tightens the main plot. And while I liked the idea of giving the partner digimon alternate evolutions, they could've played around with it more to bring a bigger impact to the final battle when Omnimon switched between forms. The lack of conflict between the kids also made the show feel underwhelming at times, especially when compared to Matt and Tai's arguments in the original "Adventure." Overall, "Adventure 2020" could've done a better job with its plot structure, but it still did alright in the end. At least the final episode sent the show off on a high note.

The original show was shorter but they had full character arcs and stronger bonds. Here it felt like they were too afraid to revisit some old beats just put something new in or stuff a cameo from elsewhere. -Hikari was stood out as the oddest one by far. When she first shows up, it's almost as if she has behavoral problems or like they were trying to reintroduce the Dark Ocean arc, but it seems like that wrote in nothing for her as a character to do on screen so she is just...blank. i know it's because Tailmon was calling her. But leaving Hikari just standing there for half an episode doing nothing else looked disjointed -The kids often notice something is still off, but because it's not their main focus, it's out of sight out of mind. -Having Takeru and Patamon out of commision for so long was a huge mess. It also feels like HolyAngemon should have gotten some sort of dark paladin mode. -The branching evolutions were very much underused. I remember the promo material seeming to mention they would do more in the real world in this season vs 99. I saw someone theorize on the Digimon subreddit maybe COVID messed up their plans and they had to shift the tone quickly. I'm sure we won't find out what happened for a while but it would be interesting to see if they had a different story planned out originally.

Adventure 2020 just felt so weird and inconsistent. I like the show's story in the big picture, but it also wanted to be both a reboot and a continuation of the original which just didn't work. Like the show was basically saying "you watched the original so we don't really have to tell/show you anything about these characters" when it was also going out of its way to try something new with them too. Like especially for Yamato so his placement with Taichi at the end of the series felt so odd because they were separated for a majority of the show that I can't really tell that these versions of them are friends and their bond and journey together being important to help Omegamon reach its full potential. I don't know. I'm still having to sit and think about this show. I'm so far leaning towards that it's just fine. Not good, not terrible, just fine.

I agree as a whole it more or less fails, looked at in particular pieces there are some pretty cool ideas. While it is never really said it, I really like how they the unofficially make Sora into Taichi's co-captain of the Digidestined essentially. She teaches him things just like in the original but she doesn't get sidelined for Yamato later on. Yet I think at the same time one could argue that Yamato himself gets oddly sidelined this time.

Also, Mileniumon was a joke. Build up over almost 50 Episodes and then defeated in a single episode. Also there was this hilarious shot during the fight against him where godramon slams him down and Milleniumon collides with solid ground, despite them fighting in the freaking sky.

Watching Millenniumon get decked by Godramon was the most beautiful thing ever. But more in a entertaining way rather than a "this was totally worth watching 50 episodes" way.
@betulla962 жыл бұрын
I mean, that shot does make sense though! They were fighting over the clouds, Millenniummon goes down, through the clouds and collides with the ground. It may have looked weird because of how HUGE it was, far bigger than the space between ground and clouds. A follow-up shot of the impact from the ground's perspective, like the back of its head piercing through the clouds and leveling a mountain would've helped a lot too. I personally think Millenniummon was done justice, even with the short screentime they made the best out of it and delivered one of the most intense fights in Digimon. I didn't love the reboot overall, but that episode really stood out. I'll happily take it over a stretched-out, lower quality fight.

You did a really good job of summing up the issues with the show that I couldn't quite put my finger on. The early episodes honestly kept me more invested cause while the new evolutions did seem to come a bit early, it was at least clear that those episodes had a clear purpose. Meanwhile after WarGreymon's debut I grew increasingly less interested cause it felt like the story wasn't going anywhere. It was just one new enemy after another with no connection to the story, no lessons learned and very rarely was gained from the fight like a new evolution (which were also criminally underutilized), until suddenly we're at the final battle X amount of episodes later. Pair this with the lack of drama between the characters and it left me feeling pretty disappointed by the time it was over. Don't get me wrong there's definitely things it did better than the original, but I feel like there were a lot of missteps that keep me from appreciating it

Something about Digimon that has always annoyed me is how stubbornly it seems to try getting away from the things that made it so remarkable in the first place. Particularly Season 1 and 3's focus on more mature content. It is a kids' series, true, but it was never like it aired anything that was just too much for the young'uns to grasp, and it took advantage of that liberty to deliver some truly memorable, complex characters and unforgettable scene. Izzy being adopted, Takato trying to care for Guilmon and stressing over his fear of what will happen if he fails, Matt and Tai devolving to fisticuffs, that scene in Tamers where a bunch of Digimon get eradicated by the government and the entire city is full of pained screaming, Leomon's death at the hand of Beelzemon and the absolutely *horrifying* series of events that play out with Jeri and the D-Reaper afterwards, and so on. It's not just limited to the shows either. The Cyber Sleuth games had some seriously messed up content too, even if it was relegated to single missions, like the Ghost Girl, Pete's entire storyline, that bizarre body-harvesting scam, the Digimon with a human collection, and so forth. Digimon is at its best when it gets weird and mature, and it makes me mad to know that everything in this new series seems to have improved EXCEPT the writing and how far they're willing to push their boundaries, especially after Last Evolution generally did that so well.

I mean, this show did do some interesting things here and there. Devimon straight up tortured Angemon, Tailmon is kind of a downer because it knows it was bad for a while, for a brief second Tai is also affected by the miasma too and gets that dope wrong evolution even if they don't really explore the consequences of that as much; Yamato and TK still have the same relationship of being protective of one another because their parents are divorced, Joe is still a mess of a character because he still has the same pressure on him although it is only implied. I agree that this show really should have had a real world arc where they face their families, but it's not like Digimon completely dropped doing things like that. Heck, even Applimon had "my brother was kidnapped and now I'm edgy", "my family hates that I want to be a youtuber rather than have the family business" and even "I'm so lonely that an emotionless robot is my best friend" Over all I just think that in the 20 years in between adventure 01 and 2020, most writers really just grew up on generic shonen and don't really do much heartfelt anymore, also networks probably don't let you get away with as much for small kids, and there's also the factor that this has a budget and an audience, Adventure 01 was a shot in the dark that needed plot because it could barely pay for animation.

@@jironamos7650 I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd have taken an Adventure Prequel or an Adventure 03 over a reboot thing anytime if we aren't getting another anthology, but like, I feel like this show justifies itself enough. It references the video games too with Mugendramon and Milleniumon having as much focus as they did, which itself is already stepping away from 01 even if its to reference something else. It's the first show to give people branching evolutions, which is something I think was greatly needed for a while now. It bothered giving all characters their Megas, which 01 and 02 didn't bother with; they didn't go the Gennai route either, which was great because any good plot is brought down with prophecy mumbo jumbo. It feels more like a celebration of everything digimon, like a 20th anniversary special celebration (well, like 25 for the tamagotchi). I like that we see digimon from Frontier and Xross Wars and everything. I think it does a good enough job of being cool and entertaining enough to bring in new kids to the franchise, and gives the old fans enough to point at and be like "oh I get that". I don't think is as offensive as a lot of people have been making it to be. It surely feels a lot less forced than Xross Wars and Applimon to me.

I agree with everything you said- I thought the exact same things as I was watching it, though I think my overall ‘score’ of it is probably a bit lower. I ended up not watching past the millenniumon fight. By that point I was…tired…of waiting for something substantial to happen. They even tossed out most of the cast for the fight, which was disappointing- why even bother with them if Ty, TK, and Kari were the only ones who were actually going to do anything in the fight that’s been hyped up for the entire show up to that point? I loved the animations and music for a lot of the battles, but I think the developers forgot that cool visuals and music is meant to be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself. The characters get individual episodes at some point, but they are mostly REALLY late and don’t actually change ANY of the character dynamics. So they feel disconnected from the overall story, plot, and feel like the devs put them in haphazardly to placate the fans looking for some character relationships and development. Speaking of which, does anyone actually feel like this group is a group of friends? Maybe towards the end, but for the vast majority of the show it just feels like they are people who work together, but don’t actually know or care about each other once they go home. They feel like ‘work friends’, not actual friends. And their individual episodes reflect that- those episodes often showcase a portion of their personality, but the other characters either don’t care or just say ‘ok, I see what you’re doing’ and move on. The character development doesn’t tie to anything and this is reflected in the digivolutions. This is best exemplified by Garurumon’s mega evolution episode. Was there any indication through the show that he liked to race? Any indication at all of any interest in anything? No, there wasn’t. And so that episode became a weird way to tie in the power of friendship with a character that the kids just met and wanted to kill them which eventually led to a mega against a foe that didn’t really deserve the screen time. I feel like the writes just didn’t know what to do with Matt and gabumon. There are other examples like this, but this is the worst one. I could rant forever about this, but Billiam does a great job explaining the many issues so I’ll stop. I’m happy for anyone who enjoyed this for the battles, they were really great throughout the show, but maybe you could try and watch the original as well? The animation of the original REALLY shows its age, but I think if you want a more cathartic and cohesive story you might like it just a bit more.

This was a good experience. As a kid, I would have LOVED this series. It has its limits, for sure. Could have explore better its plot points and give the Boss villain (Argomon, Nihidogmon, Deathmon and Negamon) a bit more of a personality. But characters are always likable and the battle choreography was almost always on point, even in the worse animated episodes. As a fan, I was hoping for something more in the last fight. I anticipated that all the kids digimon would have had their digimon go 1 level further to fight Negamon and his allies. Because THEY COULD (they have ulterior evolutions...). And MAYBE having Seraphimon and Ophanimon to fuse with their shadow digimon to form Lucemon and Mastemon. I know that it's not technically the correct way to obtain them... But who cares??? That would have been cool. And, honestly.... Negamon doesn't do it, for me. Its apparence.... It's nothing much. We have some GREAT, GORGEOUS dark Omnimon concepts in the infinite library of Digimon... Omnimon Zwart... Omnimon ZwartD... Chaosmon.... I would have used anyone of them instead of an Knight/Homunculous from Fullmetal Alchemist. But, at the end, the last sentence from Omnimon was really nice, and made me look back at the series with a new prospective. Digimon fight and kill each other, but they don't hate each other. It felt so much like "No hard feeling. Gg, WP. Maybe next time we will be friends"; I liked that attitude so much. As an former online player of FPS and MOBAs, it made me smile. Omnimon would be a great gamer to play with. "FAIRPLAY" and "MVP" to him. So yeah... All'n all, it was worth it. Good job.

One of My least favorite thing about 2020 is definitely milleniumon itself. C'mon this is one of if not THE strongest digimon ever created lore wise and it was treated as a sub-boss with very bad execution and build-up and it was defeated by typical shonen discount spirit bomb of friendship. This digimon was known to be able to control and destroy space and time, do something more with him. Also, why none of the kids are bothered with slaughtering "evil" digimon in the whole series ? In the original the kids learn that digimons are alive that's why they hesitated to kill unless it is absolutely necessary. IMO digimon absolutely failed when they are trying to tone down the more mature aspect of the narrative and absolutely thrived when they're more serious.

My gripes were definitely the pacing and the oversaturation of Taichi. Yeah, he's the "protagonist" but every other digimon show tends to also give the supporting cast time to shine. From the opening itself, it's very clear that this was gonna be the Tai show. The most disappointing thing was that the other kids didn't even get evolution sequences like Taichi and Yamato did, which is criminal considering how well made and gorgeous theirs are. Overall, the show is kind of exhausting to watch all at once. I've tried to binge watch it now that it's done, but i keep ending up dropping it after watching a few episodes because of the frenetic pacing and due to how tired i just am of Taichi.

You were very generous with this anime. I️ was generally disappointed by the show. It was so boring after the Devimon arc. It has no continuity. The other characters are just props for Taichi (which I️ hated!). The Milleniummon arc felt like it was just added in the middle to make the show longer. And they had no reason to not have the ultimates later because they were shown early and it made the show just wasted story telling opportunities. No relationship building between the kids and their digimon. Just as you said: shonen. And it did not work.

This actually helped me appreciate this season a lot more. A lot of the negative points were things I had picked up on myself, but the good points about the story and development were lost on me because the story was overall forgettable and not tied together well, as you mentioned. It's also really interesting to me that my personal standout episode list differs a fair bit from yours, despite being in total agreement that this show has some truly excellent episodes.

Episode 21 for this season is my favorite, because through it Taichi showed the true courage that he had, not only that, the way and the build up of the new mode of Metalgreymon was really emotional, first of all Splashmon was really terrifying and the brutality he showed in torturing Metalgreymon was so hard and Taichi couldn't Bearing the sight of seeing his partner fall into the miasma and jumping to save him despite the miasma surrounding him, his determination gave him the power up and opened Splashmon's mouth and then MetalGreymon got the new mode was really cool and a favourite for me. #2 probably between ep 50 and 24 I liked seeing Taichi fight with WarGreymon and launching the final blow it was an epic scene.

I agree with most of what you said especially with regards to the clash between Taichi/Tai and Yamato/Matt. 2020 was just about the battles, animation and soundtrack.

I always felt that the title was meant to be Digimon Adventure: Omega and I am surprised people took so long to notice Omegamon

WOW this is the first Digimon video I just come and watch without having just before finished watching the series it talks about, and damn I love it. This series looks awesome to me from this video even with all the weird timing decisions resulting in negative parts, becasue it mixing elements of all different Digimon products is just awesome, and also as a like monsters nerd I was kinda bummed that the physicality of Digimons never came into play so that, just that, that alone, that on its own, convinced me a hundred times over, thank you so much

I kinda feel like this show's tone was playing out in reverse of what it should have been. The first episode's general plot should have been the last.

This series was pretty dissapointing, it started great with the Our War Game recreation and then it went downhill, it's like they didn't know what to do. Giving us the adult evolutions and the ultra evolutions back to back felt really anticlimatic. The lack of an overarching plot, making most of the series just episodic makes Xross Wars Hunters look like a good show. Pros: -Mimi episodes -The music -The big episodes animation Cons: -TOO MUCH TAICHI -Way too episodic -Too many filler episode -No overarching plot -Not a single worthy villain Also, you recommended the potato episode, I think that episode is AWFUL, one of the worst filler episodes IMO.

I definitely miss the charm and camp that many of the antagonistic digimon had in the original show, partially due to their dub voices giving them more fun character. Like yeah Etamon was chasing them as an active threat in his arc, but the fact he acted and sounded like an Elvis knock-off was amazing! Him, The Dark Masters, Myotismon, and others having personalities outside of "generic monster or big bad evil guy" made them far more memorable.

It felt like they didnt have a series outline and it was a clusterfuck. Even ignoring the series starting on megas and ridiculous shit then trying to scale the powerlevels back down it had massive arc issues. It had the first arc of cast arrives to digital world, introduce themselves then fight devimon as the start, thats fine whatever albeit took a bit too long. The second arc was bizarre, they blirz their way to fighting Millenniumon, then they beat him, it feels like an ending to the series with how the fight went and all the other shit surrounding it aka they had a fakeout death cliffhanger. But after that its like the writers went "oh shit we forgot about the crests" so they what felt like asspulled another BIGGER BOSS. Except now they spend 10 episodes of pure filler character stuff which felt like it should have been at the start of the series instead of the end then abruptly fight the final boss who just shows up out of nowhere. It never felt like things were escalating at a normal pace. They just kept pulling AN ANCIENT EVIL HAS AWOKEN over and over again

I disagree, I felt like they had the whole plot outlined since the beginning.

What I liked about the Series, was that we got to see so many new Digimon that never showed up in the Anime before. That was kinda refreshing. I really liked some of the Episodes. Tho the Plot itself was rather lackluster especially with Tai in the Focus. I still haven't watched the last 5 - 8 Episodes because it doesn't really catch my interest to much. Even more excited I am for Ghostgame! I also kinda missed the Character-Development. Sure, I get, that the old Fans already knew a lot of the Crew, but new ones don't. So we barely get to see some of the background-informations we go to see in the Original.

15:39 They never even explain their relationship. Devimon just keeps calling him "old friend" but we literally never get a flashback to show if they even _were_ friends to begin with. The closest we even get is a hint that Devimon evolved from Tsukaimon which uh.... What was even the point of that? Least Devimon now has a beast mega to help justify Patamon evolving into Goddramon but LadyDevimon still doesn't get one to help justify Holydramon (who was never meant to be Kari's Gatomon's mega regardless of what the stans say otherwise, Hurricane Touchdown/Golden Digimental's plotholes are just too massive for it to be canon and direct to video spinoffs in both anime and toku usually weren't canonback then).

My take on this season after watching it week by week is: don't watch it. It becomes way too dull, the character development is weird and barely present on a lot of episodes, the pacing is trash, the digivice works like the plot wants it to, there are many instances of artificial "end of the world" tension, a lot of forgettable side characters, there's no explanation about the crests throughout most of its course, the animation is mostly cropped out, the soundtrack is nothing special, the ultimate (mega) and perfect (ultra) digimon are less used than they should have to solve conflicts, there are a lot of inconsistences mainly with the holu digimon and what they can do, and don't even get me started on the official digimon profiles. My recommendation, watch only the fortress, atlurkabuterimon, zudomon and ponchomon episodes. Also look up the the digievolution sequences if you want.

Hey Billiam, I don't often comment on KZbin videos, but I've watched your videos for years now and I'm a huge fan of Digimon (and just monsters, in general), and I genuinely think you would enjoy watching Gridman: The Hyper Agent and then follow it up with SSSS.Gridman (in that order!). It partially inspired Digimon (especially Our War Game) and is made by the company behind Ultraman. It's also finally out on Blu ray here and it's about kids fighting internet kaiju with a super hero sidekick. The sequel anime is extra great if you know the series.

The show has me so split as you say the physicality to the fights and some of the individual episodes are amazingly cool and fun stuff but on the other hand there's the pacing and as was brought up in your podcast the show asks a lot of fate from the audience and the payoff when it eventually comes I just tended to have mixed feelings on whether its worth it, this and the characters needed just a bit more depth that didn't require me filling in gaps with my knowledge of the og versions of the characters are kind of detrimental problems.
