The wonderful thing about digimon is options for instance you can start with a water based vaccine type digimon at the start and end up with a fire based virus digimon at the end depending on what evolution lines you follow.

@Rakryan N. W. In the lore Machinedramon or Mugendramon is a giant robot dragon created from 5 different cyborg digimom (MetalGreymon, Andromon, MetalTyrannomom, Megadramon, And MetalMamemon). That's honesty probably why there's so many early on. They simply didn't have enough designs to fill out the roster so they got creative about the ones they did have.

To be fair, in a lot of older Digimon games, the 2 had pretty subtle differences in their color palette, so it's pretty easy to mistake one for the other if you're not looking closely enough
