@kaisfp Ideally, you would want to go to a store and try out many different brands. It's so much easier if you're looking to get a digital piano, but not as easy if you're getting an acoustic piano. There are not that many places where you would get to try 30-50 different acoustic pianos among various brands to find the right balance in terms of the price and quality. What I would call a con in one specific brand or piano, you might consider a pro. That is because each person has different preferences to the ways pianos sound. If you're looking to get a digital piano, it's easier to go to a local piano store with a lot of digital pianos and try them all. Even if you're not a professional musician, you can play something, I'm sure, and see if you like the sound. Make decisions based on your budget. My favorite sound comes from Yamaha pianos if you'd ask about digital ones. My favorite acoustic pianos are Stainway and Bosendorfer grands, but I ain't got no money for that, so let's be realistic, and I would say Yamahas and Kawais are just as okay considering that (with Yamahas being first on the list). With digital pianos, currently what I think, I would prefer wooden keys in whatever brand I could get them at around 1 to 1.5k costing originally. Usually, that price range gives you the best experience with digital. Anything beyond that is overpriced unnecessary functions, IMHO, for a beginner or intermediate. Kawai or Yamaha, you'll get a similar thing in a specific price range if getting digital.

That sounds like a great option! The Cable-Nelson CN-16 is a reliable piano for beginners, and $1,100 seems like a reasonable price if it's in good condition. For an 8-year-old, having an acoustic piano like this will give them a solid foundation in learning touch and sound. Just make sure the piano is regularly tuned and checked by a technician for any potential repairs.

Very good video. I am a working pianist and I do play both acoustic and digitals. The beginner should not even worry about playing a digital. I totally agree. I don’t care how good they are these days. Learn to drive I always tell people before flying the plane. You must have the basics of learning to drive a car then, you can work up and that is the same about playing pianos. A digital piano has a compleetly different action and it is actually much different to play. You get a totally different feel on it that you do get on an acoustic. You feel everything vibrating naturally on an acoustic. Yes they are more expensive, but please for god sake as much as I do love playing both types of pianos the digital piano is absolutely not ment for the beginner. A digital will always bee more music production and that is a whole different world. A beginner should bee excited to play of course but many people make a bad mistake in getting a digital piano. They will never sound like an actual acoustic piano. They are much different. Yes. They may sound like one but the thing is is that it is on a digital scale. The way it functions is compleetly different than that of the acoustic. Beginners should learn on the acoustic piano so they can get the feel and control. It really bothers me to hear many many people making this mistake. They argue that the digital piano will help them because of the lesson and songs they have and software. Please wake up people!!!!! You must learn how to play the piano before even getting into the digital piano. A digital piano is going to bee much more to handle than the acoustic piano. It functions different, it sounds different. No matter how expensive the digital is it is not going to have that full body of a 9 foot grand. You are only able to control how loud a digital goes with the sample sound that it has and you can only play it so loud until you have to bring the volume up. You don’t have the control that you need like an acoustic piano. Oh and by the way I play both digital and acoustic. I know that the sound has come a long way. But,,,,, that is not the thing here. Learn to play and understand piano knowledge and then you can work up to playing a digital piano. Most beginners start on a digital piano and I hate to say this but it is totally wrong. Yes. They maybe less expensive, and yes. They do have 88 keys but,,,,,, you are not going to get all the control that you need to play the piano. Now,,,,, once that you have mastered the piano well, then you can think about a digital. A digital piano you need to learn how to control it and how to express with it. The touch of the keys is weighted these day and i am not saying that at all. But,,,,,,, the keys on a digital piano are much more stiff than that on an acoustic piano. The action fights you more. You are like having to fight it to play it. The keys are more of a bouncy feel. You need to really have a strong hand to play it... the best way to get your control is develop your skills on an acoustic piano first before wanting to mess around with something different. Because most people don’t know but playing piano all my life,,,, yes. Their is a huge difference between the 2 pianos. Now once you can play them both,,,, it is a wonderful thing to bee able to play them both. You can easily switch your brain from acoustic to digital. And back again. And the thing is is that you are not going to find a digital piano in a recydle hall or concert hall when you go to do your pieces. So learning to drive a car before you ever learn to fly a plane is crucial. The acoustic piano is like a car. You take to the road with instructions. The digital piano is like an airplane. You got to learn to man it and control many features. Plus,,,,, with a digital piano you have to have the knowledge of band and orchestras really if you want to play it. Also it is great for music production. It will help you with that. But as far as just buying one and starting out with no experience please do not do it. That is a very bad move. Once you can control an acoustic piano you will bee able to learn how to play a digital.
@areallyboredguy58254 жыл бұрын
The actions have gotten extremely close nowadays. The action on a p515 or mp11se are highly recommended. As far as actions I would say the p515 is the closest. The keys aren't bouncy and have very little upward pressure once the key begins to move. Most others have a consistent weight when pressing the key while the p515 has a clear dynamic weight you can feel.

@@YourOnlineMusicTeacher well, as I always tell people. Learn to drive a car before flying a plane. If you don’t know how to drive a car, how in the world is anyone going to just fly a plane lol!!! Well, in pianos it is kinda the same way. I look at it this way. The acoustic is like driving a car. A digital is like flying the plane because you have more tasks that you have to accomplish with a digital. If one doesn’t even know how to play a piano correctly than the digital is not going to make any sense. I always have told people if you want to play both types of pianos, you can do it but you have to work your way up. Sometimes, we have to get through the boring things before getting to the things that we desire. If one wants to fly a plane well, you should probably know how to drive a car first. Then the plane can bee the next thing that you can try. I always have said to people. You can not work from the top down. You have to work from the bottom up. I always say. Say. You can get their but it takes time and you have to accomplish what it is that you want to do correctly. So for pianos,,, if one wants to play a digital piano wonderful!!! But learn the acoustic first and then the digital will make sense.

Whilst this is true... an acoustic will always be best... however... it is good not to put people off.... not all can afford an acoustic...some live in flats.. or share accommodation....some have many reasons why an acoustic cannot be the choice... I am quite a beginner... 18months... I have a Kawai Digital... which is more than decent... I can play at midnight with earphones...and study a piece any time... I also have an acoustic (from when my daughter started piano as a 9 year old)...which is clearly the preferred choice! I do appreciate my Kawai though!

@@keys6 this is true. For a beginner who doesn’t know anything about playing a piano should really start on an acoustic. Yes. As you stated a lot of people can’t afford one that is the thing that is hard we want to encourage people to learn and get instructed but doing it the right way. Learning to understand the piano first before getting into a whole other ball park is the way to go. Most people these days though are so impatient and want things now give me give me give me and they want it now like learning how to play the piano. They want to just sit down and play a digital or not just that but songs when they have no clue how to create cords or they don’t even know the basics yet. They want instant results an it doesn’t work that way. I think that if people want to learn how to play a digital absolutely they can do it, but they really need to start from the ground up and that is starting with an acoustic piano. You are a bit different though in that you have both pianos so you have experience with both which is great. I am just talking about people who have never touched the instrument before. People have come to me dying to just play like me and I tell them that they can not just do that. You have to learn and work hard at it this is why I can play both pianos. When I started playing at a young age of 2 I didn’t start on a digital. I had all acoustic pianos in the house. I was a different kind of kid growing up because I was in a musician’s family. I was the only pianist though in the family. Everyone else took to other instruments. But their again. I learned on an acoustic piano first. Later on when I got comfortable and was playing to a fine standard, then I was shown the digital piano and it created another world. If people don’t have the experience of playing the piano on an acoustic they are not going to understand then how a digital works. The digital as you, and I know has a complete different action and it doesn’t function the same. The play is different and if you don’t have skilled playing or skills on an acoustic the digital piano is going to bee worthless for someone hhahahaha!!!! I have always told people that I taught that yes. To get to the wonderful and exciting things you have to go through the tiring stuff first. You got to work your way up and then by the time a person can get to a digital,,, then it is going to bee hard work payed of and rewarding.

Hello Miss! I wanted to ask a question. I have a nux wk310 at home,when i practice my pieces it sounds fine, but when i play on an acoustic piano it sounds messy and muddy. Is my technique damaged?
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan. It could depend on a couple of reasons. There could be that your fingers got used to electric piano keyboard (which you already noticed is different from an acoustic piano keyboard), and they are now incapable to play on an acoustic piano decently. You can still work it out with practice and consistency. Also, I don't know if the acoustic piano you were playing on are adequate enough or in tact. Also, pay attention to your posture at both pianos. Perhaps, one chair is higher/lower than the other one, and overall proportions could be out of order. Please, google "proper posture at an acoustic piano" in pictures. This should give you an idea of how to at least eliminate that factor out of the picture. Let me know if that was the case or if there's anything else that bothers you! :)

My 6-year old wants to learn piano. So we started looking and can’t decide between digital and acoustic piano. We asked a piano teacher. She said we will need to upgrade the digital in a year so might as well get an acoustic now. Also digital is not good for wrist strength. We visited a piano store and didn’t quite like the 2nd hand acoustic pianos as they were too old. The owner speaks highly of Pearl River - a Chinese brand. The lowest level is about 4000 including delivery and tuning. Can you give us some advice? Do you have experience with Pearl River?
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher3 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of Pearl River. I am a biased teacher who loves Yamaha, but maybe Kawai and of course Stainway if you can afford one. Baldwin is okay. It depends on which model and condition (in case if it was used). If you're a parent who's willing to invest in your child and are able to do that, then without a doubt and second thought you're not getting a digital one, period. I would never make my own children start playing on a digital piano, but that's just because I was able to afford a 4k+ acoustic piano and also because it is my priority to teach my children the best way possible. In this video, I am trying to give an option of getting a digital piano to those who cannot afford an acoustic one. It's better to play a digital piano than not play at all.
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, and your teacher is talking bs to be honest. Remember, the only reason why they recommend as a beginner to start with a digital piano is because they're afraid you'll tell them "no, I can't afford an acoustic one". Hence, you won't take lessons from that teacher. I always tell my students parents to get an acoustic piano because that's exactly what you want to do to a beginner. Digital piano is NOT a " beginners" piano. It's just marketing, pure marketing to sell you painos. BUT it does not necessarily mean a digital piano will damage your kid's hands/posture/sound quality. It depends on a child and a teacher. So, if we're 100% clear that the child will not be able to learn piano at all because their parents will not get one an acoustic piano, then I say "okay if that's what separates this child from taking any lessons, fine you go ahead and buy heavy weighted (preferably wooden keys) Yamaha.

Piano teacher is correct re if affordable, get an acoustic from the start. I did so with my daughter. I play piano myself now - my teacher has all age students some as young as 5 that make fantastic progress on her acoustic. You will not see highly gifted children learning on digitals. However, sometimes it is appropriate depending on where a person lives..ie appartement..shared housing... or financial restraint.

Hey Olga! On an average, how much time (in years) does it take for an adult beginer to reach an intermediate level in piano playing roughly? Thanks!
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher4 ай бұрын
Hi. See, it's hard... I'm sure most teachers give vague answers to this, and I understand why. Being an adult beginner shouldn't be a category on its own. Among adult beginners (just like younger kids), there are people with various degrees of talents and predispositions to music. I had an adult beginner who struggled for two years and learned almost nothing. She couldn't retain knowledge or remember notes no matter how hard she tried. Her fingers didn't seem to cooperate either. On the other hand, I had around 2/3 of all adult beginners who got to comfortably playing intermediate music within a couple of years. It's weird. With arguably same talents, a 7 year old would get to intermediate in about 3-4 years, and then to advanced in 3-4 more. So, it's more linear. In contrast, adult beginners usually get to intermediate in about 1-3 years, but for them to get to advanced, it usually takes either 5-6 years more, or they likely give up before they even try. I credit their initial fast progress due to having a developed brain and life experience of learning other things. I also would blame the fact that they don't usually get to advanced due to prioritizing other areas of life as family or work. It's so much easier to finish things when you're a kid, and your parents are on you.

So, practically all of my experience comes from playing and practicing on digital instruments, but I do want to make it my goal to gain more experience with real acoustic pianos. What are your thoughts on Kawai grand pianos? How do they compare to Yamaha grands?
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher2 жыл бұрын
@@NightBreakDreamer Yamaha is definitely a more pro type of instruments. I do like Kawai grand pianos, but not the upright Kawai pianos. You can read and watch a ton about comparison of Yamaha and Kawai grand pianos, but here are my personal thoughts. To me, as far as I've tried Kawai grand pianos, they feel looser, brighter sound, less resistance in keys. The Yamaha keyboard is more tight, generally, depends on the model; if you're able to play Yamaha, your fingers will not fail to play the other pianos. When I was starting out at 6 years old, my mom didn't know much about pianos. So the keyboard of my old piano was pretty loose and easy to play. So, whenever I was playing at recitals on Yamaha or Stainway grand pianos, or any other German brands (cuz I was studying in Europe, you don't see that many Austrian brands here), I had issues playing those instruments after practicing on my loose one at home. I see the same issue with my students and advise them to get tighter pianos. One of the moms even asked me if that would be too difficult for little fingers to play on my piano, and whether she should get a plastic digital piano with light keys... I was like what..?? No... omg, people don't get it... you gotta start properly with a proper piano! It doesn't have to be expensive. Why they call Yamaha a more pro brand of pianos is probably because you can perform a wider range of sound qualities. Like let's say not 50 shades of forte but 100. That's just a wild comparison, don't quote me on any numbers. Or say you want to play that Clair de Lude deeply with resonance, and yet with a shade of calmness and light sadness. You can do this better with generally more expensive Yamaha models like U3 rather than B3. I have a b3 and am pretty happy. The new one was about 7k+. The U3 one, can be anywhere from 17k to 26k. It's often not the question which one is better, but which one I can afford at the time.

If that student isn't willing to put in the effort (I WELCOME mistakes as long as the person is TRYING) - I gently let them know they are wasting their time (and mine) taking lessons from me. Ask your family or friends. Chances are they know someone who knows someone who knows someone who might just get rid of a good piano in case somebody gave up playing in one's family. You could also go on craigslist (even though I caution people in this video about it) and try out 5-10 pianos. After that, you would kind of realize which ones were good ones and which ones were not. That's in case no one can help you. After at least this experience, you would be able to find one even for free. Just like with everything else, it's either the money that you're investing or time. Digital Yamahas with heavyweighted keys are the best, and would be from around $500. The other brands could be awful with even more expensive price tag. Let me know if you find something. Wish you the best start :)

I used to live in MD until 7 years ago. There are a number of places that will deliver and, if ever needed, service. What is your budget? I think I can give you some meaningful direction. Pianos, even the high-end $$75,000 to $180,000 ones (BTW, outta’ my league) are very different. If you play a majority of jazz or rock, a piano with a ‘brighter’ voice is preferred to a mellow voice. You’d be surprised what is available in high quality digitals / hybrids for a few thousand dollars. If you don’t even know if you’ll like it, there are many good very low cost options ($500 - $2,000.)There is so much I wish I would have known when getting my first. Believe it or not, the internet, although it seems to be accurate and helpful, is not accurate for everyone, and can be quite misleading in this field. If you can give me some details as to goals, likes and dislikes, I’ll do what I can to help you out. I’m retired, more or less, so I have time. Also, I recognize that you may not even know the questions to ask. When I started out I didn’t even know the best brands or types to checkout. The internet really mis-led me too. Well, as you can see, it’s late (EST) and I just lost my second wind. I wish there was a way to talk or chat without having to post a number. Ken I have the time. Ken

I was about to get some free piano from Craigslist but your video totally opened my eyes. Paying 150 dollars for tuning, paying for U-hual and some people to help me to deliver the piano with me would cost more than just a digital piano and it might not work. Thanks for this great video. I am an absolute beginner. Do you think a Yamaha P-125 will do the work for me? Or you recommend some other pianos in this range of price? Thanks again for the great video.
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher4 жыл бұрын
That's right. Unless you're willing to take a risk and ask relatives for help, use their truck, etc. I did it once and regret it. Yamaha P-125 is a nice digital piano. Though, digital pianos also break if you crack it or spill coffee on it🤷♀️ Happy to help! Let me know if there's anything I can help with

What price range are you looking at? There is a pretty good spread. If you know you’ll give it a serious shot for a year or so, that could dictate one thing. If you truly have no idea at all, you can find adequate keyboards with accessories for under $200. Ive seen adequate setups for under $150. Funny though, the better the piano/keyboard, the more enthralled most people get. But there are so many variables in type of music desired, skill to be obtained, etc. Try to address these and I will take some time to try to give you some direction. Ken

Ken Peters hi Ken, thanks for writing this. I bought a Roland FP-30 Piano for $720 a few months ago and I love it! I preferred to buy a digital one, so I didn’t have to deal with broken keys, tuning, delivering.
@kenpeters98074 жыл бұрын
You won’t beat that. Perfect at this juncture. If you find you like it a lot, eventually ‘feel’ of the piano will become important ...; then very important, to feel yourself to make music, not just play notes in time. This comes through feel on the keyboard. A very good hybrid can amazingly do the trick. Nothing can replace a $90,000 grand, but.... I am so glad you’re happy! I started similarly with a$1500 Suzuki. Part or the cost was in the furniture. A year and a half later, I got the Kawai CA98. I transition seamlessly between this a various “good” grand pianos. I know a lot of people who started like we did and in 6 months to 3 years changed. (Three years is too long if get into classics.) Enjoy!!! Welcome to a great club. Ken P

Hello , im student and money matter at this time for me , but im also a piano player and i want to buy a digital one for myself to start palying again , as i said money matters:( could you please Guide me and tell me which of these are your prefers if you were me . Thank you in advance 🌹
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Sure, as a very simple answer, I would say get Yamaha P125, if money matter even more, then Yamaha P45, if the money still matter even more after that, you can take a risk and get a used one, just be careful to check it back and forth for any sorts of damages. And again, in that case, there would be risk involved. Let me know what you decide!

To give an example: I had my students buy used Yamaha Clavinova that run from 3k+ for $500. They just carefully examined the piano, played all the keys, made sure the pedals work properly, the cables are in good condition, that there are visually no damages, etc...
@ricktherko26274 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video! Here is my problem: I have around 3k dollars budget, and see a Yamaha clp675 digital piano. I have played electronic piano for years but for now I don’t intend to hire a teacher to learn piano. Just wanna practice and complete few piano songs I really love. Should I buy it or buy an acoustic piano with the same price.
@YourOnlineMusicTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Personally, for 3k, I would buy an acoustic used Yamaha. I would be able to differ a good deal from a bad deal. If you can, go for it. Whatever budget you have, I would include piano tuning and moving services in it, so that you don't get frustrated by going over the budget. I might get disliked here by many, but honestly, for me, that Clavinova stuff is already too much. Why wouldn't just get a nice acoustic piano. I would get a digital one for up to $1,500. Otherwise, it's a waste of money for me. If you want some incredible features for band playing, I would once again get something like Nord with the budget you have.
@kenpeters98074 жыл бұрын
A $3000 budget is adequate to buy a very good digital. Look at KAWAI before buying anything else. The CA series. I have a CA98 and -lay regularly on Steinway grands. The transition from one to the other is seamless. And you can create music (Other than merely playing notes) on the CA series. If you can nudge your budget to about $6K then look at the high end of the CA series, the new CA99. (I have the predecessor CA98.) The CA 99 has a sound board, fairly long wooden (real) piano keys and the best sound reproduction in the industry. A rind of mine has the CA 58 ( I think). He is retired on a limited budget. Many many moons ago had a grand and recently got back into piano (in a smaller retirement home). He loves it! So definitely check out the Kawai digitals and hybrids. Many Kawai dealers give great discounts (so price haggling is okay, regardless of what you’re told. If you get totally sold on the CA99 (which, unfortunately you will), KAWAI and dealers have great financing deals near year end. Go for it and try them out. I am a retired CPA and no relationship with KAWI at all, except as an extremely satisfied customer. Best to ya’ Ken

What I love about it is the compact profile. I can definitely see how this model fits a tiny space or can be easily carried around. It has been discontinued in 2020, so I don't know maybe look for a newer model? It is not so much enjoyable in terms of touch and sound, but for the price and the compact profile again, that's a good keyboard.
