Just fyi: only do this to a digital watch that won't hurt your wallet should something go wrong. Also, I will be doing follow up videos at six months, one year, etc unless it miserably fails sooner. Even though Mineral USP is chemically inert, I want to see what happens if anything at all. I am only worried about the tocopherols in this particular bottle which could have an effect. Just to be clear. I did this after I found out how much an oil filled divers watch sells for. Once the oil completely fills the case it's water proof all the way to the floor of the ocean.

The bubble itself? yes. But the oil makes the watch face more visible from any angle. Digital faces tend to look good only when viewed head-on. That's why I'm here, actually

make it 100% Bubble free and now you have a 1000 meter waterproof watch. Oil filled underwater drone can go very deep without needing a super strong hull. You do want to check whether or how much is give is in the oil as in compressive strength (Water is incompressible ) closer to incompressible deeper you can go

I oiled my Rolex GMT Master. A nice bubble appeared just under the AR-coated sapphire crystal. Nice to see how the second hand is ploughing through the transparent oil. But I've got to say the watch is less accurate since then. Can I have my money back?

Replacing the led(s) is pretty easy and only costs a few dollars, I flipped the polarizing filter on my AE1200 and put in green leds it looks soooooo much better.

I have the perfect contender! I have a Timex Grid Shock. I had the batter changed and after that, I'm getting fog inside. This means the watch is no longer water tight I understand. The Grid Shock has a nice large window, and the oil may eliminate the fog and bring back water resistance. And if it all fails, well that's okay as the watch is compromised already! Maybe a great way to bring back a watch.

Gotta say, I'm with Uncle Jimmy and Ted on this one Curt. And mineral oil is a petroleum based product so not sure what the long term effects on gaskets and the movement will be.

Mineral USP is inert (non-chemical reactive) supposedly. So far after 24 hours, nothing has changed with the watch. It is just as accurate but the long term effect is why I'm doing this. I got sick of reading bro-science forums with absolutely no actual data to back up their claims on either side. Whatever happens to these watches will be documented for you guys as well as for me :)

Groovy. Thanks for being our guinea pig. I do know that some versions of SuperLube for instance, which I use to lube o-rings, are not compatible with certain types of rubber gaskets and they have different formulations for different uses, food grade, industrial grade, etc., because the gaskets are different rubber types. I commend you for doing this even if it's kinda stupid. If you do see a failure it will most likely be on one of the pusher gaskets first. I'm still with Uncle Jimmy and Ted though. Their reactions are exactly what I thought they would be but still f'ing hilarious! The experiment isn't stupid, but not sure why anyone would want a bubble floating in their watch. But whatever winds your watch, right? 😉

Pretty cool. You made your own (digital) Ressence watch! Home-baked(or - filled in this case) high-horology on a budget! But, seriously, do you think this actually will increase the WR?.. Have you watched The Abyss? I think same concept as that experimental liquid oxygen they have to submerge and breath in to go to super deep depths.. because there i no air/gas (or a lot less of it) inside the watch (or the person), the pressure between inside and outside when submerged is sort of balanced or cancelled out (a bit).. at least that's the theory. I guess the only way you'll really find out is if you submerge yourself in mineral oil and go into an abyss with the watch and see what happens.. or, perhaps safer, just tie the watch onto a rebotic submersible and have it go down there itself without you. Either way, cool mod most people who didn't know were probably going to flip out.. probably blew a couple peoples' minds away with this one. Whooaa! No way!? I don't have a watch to do this with, but I was entertained none the less by this. Thanks!

Yes, you can tint the oil by using lamp oil coloring. Regular food coloring won't work because it doesn't dissolve in the mineral oil.

It makes display reading easier and increases waterproofness when done correctly. Also if you warm the watch and oil there is less risk of bubble occuring.

Mineral oil destroys the rubber seals and plastics. Using mineral oil was not a good idea. You should have used silicone oil.

Absolutely useless and I bet the oil eventually is going to ruin the quartz module, which is designed to work dry, as simple as it sounds. Sure, there are no analogic hands to move through the oil but resistances and contacts are not improved at all, just the opposite. Dinos are more intelligent than you, lol.

It is absolutely useful to me and possible for others as well. I wanted to see for myself what would happen, if anything, in the long run (which I will absolutely document). I love experiments! I actually hope that it does fail in a spectacular way! So far, the watch is just fine and keeping time as it should. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
