I've used both and although Serato does seem to look a bit nicer (maybe not anymore since VJ 2020), Virtual DJ is way better when it comes to features and value. In the end I purchased VDJ and absolutely love it. A lot of DJs think Serato makes them a better DJ but in reality it's your talent that makes you good, not your equipment.

Nah, not simultaneously, but they're both installed, I use the VDJ for bigger gigs, I use the Serato for smaller gigs

Why dont you ask which one has more options and which one is more flexible? Preference is not saying which one is better. Use hard facts. VDJ wins in every category, Serato is left in the dust even before VDJ 2020. Serato is just a simple player. VDJ takes it to another level.

me personally, dropped Serato decades ago! dropped Traktor years and years ago, dropped Rekordbox years ago. VDJ is the standalone winner! works with EVERY piece of DJ equipment ever made! has features other DJ softwares can only dream about, gets updated once a month guaranteed and the list goes on and on and on!!! I use both. and both are good. the biggest differences are VALUE and CONVENIENCE . VDJ just gives you more bang for the buck. Serato gives you the same features but you end up paying separately for features with their ridiculous expansion packs. Also for convenience VDJ wins easily. I cant tell you how many times when I travel and i have to use an unfamiliar controller at a venue with Serato I have to scurry and download licenses, firmware, drivers etc . But with VDJ , I literally just plug and play with almost any controller.

Virtual dj has always allowed you to use (and even build) other skins to make it look and perform how you like. I use a very old skin with my VDJ 2021 cause I'm just used to it and with all the other customizable features as well as stability VDJ wins hands down as it always has been a step ahead of the rest.

The way I see it djing 20 yrs ago isn't the same as djing today cause as technology increase, the artform is evolving making way for new creative ways to do what we do. Based on that, software does matter to some extent, especially nowadays where everything is digital. While they basically do the same thing, they dont do it all in the same way cause it's not just about loading a track and playing or mixing it in. There are other factors that we use in preparing and performing and this is where we rely on software to help us in the easiest way to deliver.

Serato is a good program but VDJ I love for it's stability. It loads up so fast and has never crashed on me. I use Serato at home and VDJ in clubs....also use Rekordbox and Traktor but always come back to VDJ. Version 2021 has Beatport support and can remove vocals from the track

I'm trying to use VDJ with my pioneer ddj 200 but cannot get the split cable to separate the audio coming out of my speaker + cue with my headphones. The sound alwys comes out of both even if I press only cue button 1 or 2. Do you know why this is?

Hi. Just want to add that in VDJ you can use different soundcards simultaneously, in Serato only a small amount of those , just the ones allowed. For example, i use a Numark mixtrak platinum, which sound card sucks, and in VDJ i can use either any of other soundcards i use , such as a Motu audioexpress or a behringer umc 404 hd or any other, Such thing is not possible in Serato Cheers

That's true, Serato's licensing works on a "per sound card" basis.

It should be noted that in the video he states the price of VDJ Pro as $299 and then makes the statement later on that "it should be noted that Virtual DJ pro gives you all the add-ons for this price". However if you look into Serato pricing you also can get it's pro version with all the add-ons bundled at the same price $299 one time payment. I personally use VDJ and have for years but wanted to make sure to point out the prices with all the features are the same.

I use Rekordbox(mainly due to Pioneer controllers), Traktor Pro 3 & recently tried a newer version of Virtual DJ had a older version 8 previously. I will say the Vdj support is very widespread equipment wise, hid as well as basic functions & for a lot of obscure brands/models. They even support Gemini MDJ series full hid, with which MDJ 900/1000 sending audio back into a standard mixer makes these majorly a contender for the full combination price (chump change for the MDJs). Everything works solidly start & stop time dials all they pre set loop buttons, everything Gemini wanted them to be as they were, they are with vdj. It is expensive though Vdj on it's own. You CAN'T get that with Traktor just basic self mapping, they don't supply enough maps, which will cost custom. Rekordbox is a closed system. VDJ works with all my Pioneer Controllers, CDJ 400s & Denon SC5000s & the Gemini MDJ 900s. All of them. & Doesn't seem to have as high CPU usage either.

I have both, as I started with VDJ Pro then discovered Serato a few years later, at the time Serato was more efficient and once I got used to the differences was my main choice. Now that VDJ has come into the same arena I am torn, but I have noticed that the temperature on my Mac pro is a lot higher when using Serato. I'm looking into that.

I bought a Numark NS7iii and was bummed when Virtual DJ didn't have touch control capability like Serato offered. I loved VDJs ability to add whatever VST effects you want, unlike Serato.

Serato responds waaaaay faster than serato dj pro.. it has more features in adjusting for personal feel in terms of midi mapping and programming the controls... waaaaay more samplers, waaaaay more features.. I just use a serato dj pro skin on my virtual dj and I'm good 👍 virtual dj also scans all my crates and subcratss super fast with no lag whatsoever.. I've used both for years so thank you for coming to my ted talk..

I like both I been on serato DJ for years. In fact since serato itch. I just recently upgraded my gear and laptop. I got a new MacBook with Sonora and now serato pro takes to long to load up the iTunes library and erases the crates when I shut off and turn on the serato program. Frustrating and trying to fix and figure out everything possible I gave up and went with virtual DJ. No problems works flawlessly and sounds great and quick set up. You can do all sorts of adjustments with the settings. I ended up just buying the lifetime virtual DJ. Although I really enjoyed serato for years their program doesn’t seem to function with a lot of laptops. So far I like virtual DJ just as long as it works and functions properly which it does I’m happy. My only hang up with virtual DJ is I wish I could get rid of their wave forms and sync functions

And not sure what you even mean .. if you look at Pro djs such as Tiesto, Avicii (rip),Eric Prydz. and the vast majority on the Top 100 DJs list, they dont use dj software at all .. might as well say "never use serato" for that matter (while granted , in some scratch/hiphop dj circles, Serato might have a bit of a dominance (for the obvious reason Serato used to be a vinyl only software for a decade). But doesnt take much imagination to see that djing and venues of djing extend far beyond these types of djs only, and in many scenes of professional djs VirtualDJ has the dominance, specially so for event, mobile, wedding, bar etc)

They both work in the same way, 95% anyway. It's true that (very generally) Traktor = house/techno DJs, Serato = hip hop, open-format, Virtual DJ = mobile, Rekordbox = club, but there are plenty of users of all these types who use one of the other programs.

what really bugs me is that you can't choose an audio interface of your choice to use with serato. For example, when the serato mixer or controller disconnected, I can use Serato Play with my RME sound card and enjoy the sound, but when I connect my controller - the sound from Serato goes thru the sound card built in the controller, and I can't use my RME anymore. What's the point of doing that, Serato?? I'm totally satisfied with the sound of my RME, so just let me use it!!

So you're not using Soundcloud as a streaming service in the software? If you have the tracks downloaded to your computer then you can make a mix and record the same as you would with any other tracks (hitting record in the software)

Why are tracks highlighted in blue in serato unlike in virtual dj?

Depending on your options Serato will turn tracks blue/grey to signify a track has been played, it's just part of the user interface :)

Possibly with a skin, it already puts a red cross next to a track if you've played it but doesn't highlight the name

Just spent 2 years with rekordbox as I got a ddj-1000. Now they want to hide my rmx effects behind a subscription so I'm done. Virtual dj is what I first started out on years ago and I honestly wish I didn't leave. Virtual dj 2020 is amazing and destroys rekordbox in almost every way and then some. Have never used serato before but I'm sure it can't be any better than what atomix has been working on for 20 years 🤷‍♂️

Hi I was using pioneer DDJ-SR with virtual dj . But now is not working any more !! Do I have to buy the Virtual Dj Pro ? Or these is another way to make it work again ?

Hopefully the light version of Serato has video effects included so I can try those out. Vdj is very solid and never skips a beat, but I'm bored with the video effects.

I just tried Serato's DJ Pro one month for a dollar promo. I guess you have to spend an extra $100 to use video. Not interested in Serato at all, especially after it installed VS C++ and Quicktime on my computer. Serato is too much ish. I'll delete and continue using VDJ

We should maybe do a video on it sometime but for the most part it works and does the job! Nowhere near as polished as the "big 4" :)

you should really look at Serato Video PC vs Virtual DJ Video PC, I think you would be really surprised in the difference in performance of the 2. and spoiler alert, Virtual DJ Video Mixing trounces Serato Video saddly

I’m thinking of getting the reloop touch as an upgrade from my current 2 channel serato mixer. It comes with virtual DJ Pro 8 and I’d really appreciate if anyone knows of the virtual DJ software updates still apply to the controller or if your stuck with just the one version?

Even though I just bought the Roland DJ-505, external controllers are unnecessary garbage overkill to look cool: if people rely on them especially for events it's a setup for failure; keep it simple IMO

I think that Virtual DJ it’s an amazing software... Light for the CPU, Customizable and Easy to Use. Such a Pity they have waited so many years before uprating their interface and step it up into a professional field.
