When I transitioned from a 2008 HD TV to a 4K TV in 2024, the Bravia 8 was one of my possible picks. Everything was leaps ahead of the old HD TV I had, and all this was really overwhelming, to say the least. I held off until late October for a better deal on any TV, and in the end, I ended up buying the Sony A95L for a deal I'd never seen listed online, but I got it in-store by being at the right place on the right day and time. The Bravia 8 is a good-looking TV and way better than my old TV. I was just taken by what the other brands and models offered and, in the end, got what I thought fit my viewing needs, and it looks incredible.
@mohamedahmed1023Ай бұрын
The lack of smooth gradation is ridiculous. This was present in prior mid-tier TVs. I don't want to hear rationalizations from an organization about why they're stripping out features in a TV that were present in prior iterations of said TV.

Hi Caleb. Thanks for all the work you do. I really enjoy your videos. I learned a lot from you. I received a Bravia 8 as a replacement TV for my A80L that was having some sound issues. I was happy to see what this TV had in store because my A80L was the perfect TV for me. Everything played beautifully and everything was upscale to an incredible level. I’m one of the unlucky ones that received a Bravia 8 with some defects. One major one is if you’re watching any streaming apps from the internal operating system, especially KZbin, there will be a stutter. And it’s a bad one and it’s really annoying. Also a lot of digital noise on dark scenes. Sony’s engineers try to say that this is an Internet issue. Those of us, and there are many of us out there online talking about this, know, this is not the case. All my other TVs work perfectly and the one solution for this is to use an external streaming device. I purchased a Apple 4K device and once I started using it, everything played perfectly. Again, proving it is not the Internet and it’s a defect in this TV. Not everybody has this problem. We also bought a Bravia eight for the apartment in California And it’s fine. I really hope that enough people bring this to Sony‘s attention so they can do some kind of update that will fix this issue. Right now I really wanna just throw it in the garbage and start over with a different brand. Unfortunately all of my sound systems are Sony and I do like the acoustic center sink feature. I would be curious if you have a Bravia that you could try using the internal apps to see if you have the same issue. Like I said not everybody is having the same issue but a lot of us out there are. Thanks.

@@timowthienot everyone has this issue. We have two of them and only one has the issue. I also have some pretty bad digital noise too that cannot be eliminated. I’ve talked to a few other people on different sites and there are quite a few people that have this issue. It is absolutely not the Internet. Both my Roku and Apple TV play perfectly on the same TV. Just the internal apps are the problem

Caleb - Great Review.! The Bravia 8 has been beat up in 2024. Yours was the first truly comprehensive review that sought to ask, “why Sony, why?” I absolutely agree. For the whole of the year after calibrating my first Bravia 8 I have classified this model to my clients as “Sony’s Lifestyle TV.” It seems to me Sony sought to produce a TV in this price range with more Boom 💥 and Sizzle 🔥giving its customers a punchier experience. Personally, as a dealer I have steered clients to the Samsung S90D. In the 55” and above size range you get all of the QDOLED goodness 🤩📺 with none of the WOLED drawbacks, 4 2.1 ports and all for less $dollars$ than the Bravia 8. Sure there’s no DOLBY VISION, but there is HDR10+ which isn’t too shabby and even though the Video Processing isn’t on Par with Sony when it comes to low bit rate / low res content, with 4k content it’s gorgeous. Really looking forward to your CES coverage. Thank you for all of your work in 2024. Cheers 🍻
@lpromer4796Ай бұрын
Would you recommend the Samsung S90D over a Sony A80L exclusively to stream movies and shows? Thanks!
@SENCORE_ISFАй бұрын
@ Great question. Absolutely, The A80L “was” an exceptional Display in its day. Good Pre-Calibration White Balance accuracy. Exceptional PQEOTF tracking, and approaching reference reflection handling and viewing angle. However it’s still a WOLED, color volume, saturation etc. cannot compete. Not to mention the A80l in my opinion (unless) you’re in a dark room should not be considered if HDR/Dolby Vision content is of importance. It maxes out in the 600NIT range. The S90D nearly doubles this figure, being it can reach nearly 1200 Nits for modest periods. Lastly, as good as the A80L‘s reflection handling and viewing angle are, they’re not in the realm of the S90D. Reflection handling is a result of technological improvement over time and the viewing angle improvement is simply inherent in the simplicity of the design of QDOLED. They’re viewing angles are stellar.

Hi Caleb, Thanks for this review. I have been waiting for more coverage of this model. I bought the 77" Bravia 8 Costco model last week over Xmas. I am coming from a 65" A9G Master Series OLED that I have loved, and we needed a 2nd tv. I am a little frustrated with the interface being used to the Android OS. It is not as snappy. I am ok with the few negatives you pointed out because I just don't care for LG TVs after using my parents. So this Bravia 8 comes in significantly cheaper than the A95L or even Bravia 9. We will also be using it quite a bit off angle. Sad to see it not get the glowing review across the board with settings and PQ I was hoping for, but it seems very similar to my A9G so no complaints yet. Also have it hooked up to a newer Sony receiver so lots of synergy there. Thanks for publishing this though!

Also the 77 size is nice but I’m wishing it was even bigger.

I owned 2 Bravia 8s. Loved the picture, but was plagued by sound issues immediately after receiving sw/fw updates. Despite help from an excellent Sony support guy over the course of almost a month, problems continued. External hookup is identical to the Sony the B8s replaced. Finally, B8s were returned and I bought the LG C4. Set it up identical to the B8 and have had zero issues since. The LG is my first non-Sony TV in 50 years.

I too had this issue. The audio and video on the Bravia 8 wouldn’t stay synchronized, even when I was just using streaming services built in the tv and output sound via tv speakers. The worst part was that it was not consistent so I couldn’t just add an audio delay with my receiver and blanket fix the problem that way. Had Sony techs remote connect into the tv and they couldn’t fix it either. Had to return it and get the C4 as well for the Dolby vision. The only issue is that the video isn’t as nice on the lg as it was on the Sony so I am sad in that regard.

I noticed all these issues when I A-B’d the Bravia 8 against A95L, Bravia 7, A80L. This TV is not great for colour accuracy out of the box and the PQ tracking is also too dark. In addition on max brightness the TV is considerably less bright than the LG C4 and Samsung S90D. Sony is definitely up to something here!! And it’s not good. I suspect cost cutting and you can see it in the picture quality. If I was you and you wanted Sony traditional TV attributes I would get the A80L which has none of these issues and is cheaper or the Bravia 7 or 9 and ofcoarse you could also pony up and get the A95L. Either way this TV is well below par especially for the price. Sorry 😔 but that is the truth.

WORD OF WARNING TO PROSPECTIVE SONY BUYERS!!! My 9yo Vizio TV (I know, I know) just died . After watching this glowing review, I beat a path straight to the nearest Costco and bought the Sony Bravia 8. Great picture! Stunning!. TONS OF AUDIO PROBLEMS. 1) My old soundbar, which worked PERFECTLY with any TV connected to it for over a decade, had audio clipping issues when connected to the brand new Bravia 8. Plays sound for 5 seconds, then silence for 1 second, then sound for 5 seconds, then silence for 1 second, repeat, repeat, continuously. No Good. I've tried everything, changing HDMI cables, changing settings, doing a factory reset on the soundbar, doing a reset on the new TV, etc. I even contacted the manufacturer for a firmware update for the soundbar. None available. Nothing fixes the issue. I disconnected the soundbar and tried the TV's built-in speakers... 2) the built-in speakers crackle and buzz LOUDLY at random times. They usually put out correct sound, but the problem randomly returns, regardless of the media source, whether it's internet-based or played back from a local video or sound file on my PC. The built-in speakers sound surprisingly good compared to other modern big screen LED TVs I've heard, but they're still less than desireable, so I've ordered a digital audio optical cable to try to get my excellent soundbar going via a different connection method. Fingers crossed. I do not get the crackling/buzzing sound when listening to bluetooth headphones connected via my PC. Also, my new TV's settings are supposed to notify me of a software update whenever available. After having the TV for about a week, I manually checked for a software update anyways. An update was available (though the TV didn't notify me about that, as programmed) and I applied the update. It did not fix the problem. I've googled around and learned that many, many Sony Bravia customers are experiencing the same issues in recent months and Sony isn't fixing the problem. I've tried to contact Sony tech support, but I'm getting the runaround. So much for Sony being the go-to brand. Their website(s) won't even let me login to a years-old account to register the new TV and won't let me change my password or let me input a verification code to prove I am who I am to let me into my account to get any kind of help. I'm pretty disgusted with Sony right now and am starting to consider returning this POS to Costco. Next step is to contact Costco Tech Support. I hate LG products. I hate Samsung products. If Vizio didn't sell to Walmart, I'd be considering another Vizio right now. You've all been warned.

Lg c9 got burn in towards the end of my extended warranty so I swapped for the Bravia 8, very happy with my decision so far. Way less color banding on the Sony regardless of the weird changes they’ve made to that setting. Considerable improvement to color and brightness in game mode over the lg. dropped the overly blue white point down a hair and everything looks awesome. Has a little green tint off angle on one side like is being reported on the c4’s (same panel) but I use it for gaming and movies in my small bedroom straight on. Currently gaming on ps5 pro but if I ever need more 2.1 ports I will just get a splitter. All and all would recommend for anyone with a similar use case. Update has created an audio issue with sound coming from hdmi ports…people have been reporting it I hope it gets patched soon.

I always recommend people get an external streaming device. Performance is often better and you won't be limited by the TV's OS or remote. And with a soundbar/receiver the tv's speakers are no longer a consideration either. Then the focus can be solely on picture quality.

Yesterday I went to an electronics chain showroom floor and did a comparision between the LG G4, not the C4 mentioned here mind you, and the Bravia 8 both in 55". The G4 model was very impressive, but It seemed to be an easy purchase for the Bravia 8 for me. Strange I thought, as the G4 is the 'flagship' and the Bravia 8 is considered mid-tier.
@yousellouts9 күн бұрын
Bravia 8 is more upper-midrange tier OLED. G4 is superior and considered a high end OLED because of the MLA panel and it doesn't have the flaws mentioned in this video. However the Bravia 8 would most likely have superior image processing and perhaps a more tasteful vivid mode (which is what's often used to demo TVs in store) compared to the G4. So it's not unthinkable you'd choose the Bravia 8, it could be considered 'high end' when it comes to TVs in general.

Bravia 7 has a smooth gradation setting and 20-point white balance so your argument that it's an enthusiast-only/professionals-only feature falls apart a bit. Not so far. But maybe a software update could fix that. No and it will not in the future because they aren't the same company. They will need to synchronize to prevent audio delay. Samsung and LG have this feature with their proprietary soundbar.

Sony needs to concentrate on larger than 77” - 83” OLEDs. They need to start producing OLED panels in the 90+ inch range. Size is now king and many buyers will opt for a 98” TCL LED over a 77” or 83” OLED despite the OLED having a superior picture. Many enthusiasts will pay more money for the bigger OLED but not the smaller OLED when they can get a bigger TCL or Hisense LED TV. My next TV will be a 90-98” Sony OLED.

Thanks for the super informative video. I think, for me at least, the lack of 4 2.1 ports would be the deal breaker. I got a CX back in 2020 for that reason over the Sony OLEDs, plus they're around 10% cheaper. I do feel Sony has slightly better processing and while Google TV is better than WebOS, I use an AppleTV and only interact with the TV's OS to do updates. For sound, I use a Dolby Atmos setup so that is not a factor for me. I'm looking to upgrade my CX to a C4 or maybe splurge on a G4, I'm tired of the low brightness on Dolby Vision content on our CX.

I watched your Bravia 8 video on my 2 week old Bravia 8 😂 and you are spot on in every respect. Couple usability things you didn’t cover: Closed Captioning does not work (on my set, anyway) on the NextGen over the air (from an antenna) TV channels. However, it works fine on the broadcast sub-channels, the .2, .3 etc. Also missing is the setting where closed captioning is enabled when the MUTE button is pressed. I also wasn’t impressed with the little plasticky remote that was supplied with my set. The app buttons are in the wrong place at the bottom and there is no direct access numeric keypad. And the button labels are all cryptic symbols, instead of words. This is easily solved by ordering the OEM Sony remote RMF-TX621U. Much better build and button feel (especially the all-important center wheel) than the included remote, all the buttons are in the correct place with apps near the top and they are labeled with actual words and numerals. A full ten digit keypad is at the very top, there’s a direct access button to closed captions and one for previous channel (jump), and, best of all, it’s backlit, as soon as you touch it. It’s both Bluetooth (a breeze to pair) and infrared. About $35 on Amazon. 2 AAA batteries not included.

I have two oleds in the upstairs bedrooms: an Lg 65A2 and an Lg 65CS. Neither would top the Oled charts but I'm not a gamer and to me they are both fantastic for watching films/movies. My main tv is the 2022 Lg 75QNED91QE. I had the 65 inch 2021 version which developed a minor flaw and was able to return it. That unit only cost me £819. I was able to get the 75 inch 2022 model for £1,000. Would I like to have a 77 inch oled in my living room? Absolutely. But for the money the Qned is fantastic as an all-rounder especially for 4k Hdr football (although watching MU in any format is painful these days) it's incredible. And having trawler the Internet I haven't found a single review - possibly one. Rtings didn't rate the 2021 model but for the vast majority of people a large screen mini led in a living room is the way to go. I'd still like the latest/brightest large screen Oled though 😂

@SquawkBox13 if all else was equal, yes, but the profit margins on mini LED TVs are higher than on OLEDs. If they can push you to buy a more expensive BRAVIA 9 they benefit both from a higher price and greater margin. The A95 is an outlier-they’ve already invested in the design, engineering and manufacturing for it so they need to keep selling it until they hit their profit goal-or at least break even if they decide to abandon it. The next natural question is, “why make the BTAVIA 8 at all then?” The answer to that is some consumers are looking specifically for an OLED no matter what, so they keep an OLED in the line for those customers rather than losing a sale to LG. This is pretty standard market optimization, really.

History lesson of Sony products as I remember from a camcorder history - 3 different models back in early 2000s... 3 price levels. From HW perspective they were the same, only SW was different... Making people to spend more if they wanted specific features. Unless you knew a guy who for around 100 USD could make a SW update to give you the features of the model that was almost 400 USD more expensive... So I think it is not about saving the money in production (it would be SW develpoment anyways) but trying to convince people of buying the more expensive model with higher margins. No one really cares that most people won't understand and use these features. But in the product comparison charts people tend to go to models that give them feeling of getting more for just some add-on on the price...
@denvera1g1Ай бұрын
I'm going to speculate that the omission of color calibration controls may also be intended to drive users that want them to more expensive models(assuming the more expensive TVs use a similar panel tech) The chips used on these TVs are tiny, and generally are not on the latest process node If this has similar silicon to a GPU that sold for $150 6 years ago(using the same, now much cheaper, silicon), i'd speculate they may save more money by just having the same chip on every TV and then just have different software/firmware packages. In other words the cost difference between these chips might be $5, but the cost of having these 2 different pools of chips and code might be $15 It all depends on the cost of the chip, the cost of the added steps/different parts(a different chip means a different board as well) and if there is enough volume on the higher end TV to justify using the higher end chip on the lower end TVs. If there's only 10k units of the premium TVs, but 100k units of the cheaper TVs, then it is a no brainer to have 2 different chips. But if there are similar numbers between the 2, and the price difference is a wash, the only reason to not include it is to push customers to another TV, be it another sony, or another brand. Edit Sony isnt exactly a stranger to weird choices in chips. Why in the world did they keep the old Zen2 design in their PS5 Pro when Zen3 is effectively a drop in replacement with better efficiency, and better performance when using more than 4 of the 8 cores, and 2x the cache per core(may not have an effect on existing games but can increase efficiency by hitting the RAM less or leave more RAM cycles for the GPU) Also i'm sure the people who really care about color accuracy, would be able to figure out how to adjust the source, though you'd be SOL on the built in Android TV.
