I'm 66 and a farmer in Nebraska. It's incredible the widespread and enduring appeal of this song. Even out here where I live. You can hear farmers playing it out of their tractor cabs, and coming out of pickup windows. Here in the friggin' Midwest, of all places! And it's popular among all age groups and backgrounds. Even my 80 year old uncle loves it! Very, VERY few popular songs have ever managed to do that. It attests to the talent of these guys. You just can't listen to this song without tapping your feet and wanting to sing along with it.

according to google, a mile is 5,280 feet. multiply this by 500 and you have 2,640,000 feet. however, this is said twice, ''a thousand miles''. so you have to multiply THAT by two, arriving at the final destination of 5,280,000 feet. Wikipedia science says the average human walks at a pace of 3 feet per second. if you divide your final, 5280000, by 3, you get 1,760,000 seconds. that is only 29,333 minutes, 488 hours, or 20 straight solid days of walking. I would say he made it awhile ago given he didnt rest much....

I didn't know English when I was listening to this song six years ago on that sunny sweet day at school when just a few of us were there with our teacher on the balcony drinking tea and enjoying the warm weather. I was in my world laughing with others and listening to this. Today I found it again and now that I understand English I should say that the good feeling is still there, even better, it feels like I'm still there, under that warm sunlight laughing with my friends and teacher.
