I tip my hat to you sir. You are indeed one of the artists of the RC scratch build world! You've shown some real originality in your builds! You, ExperimentalAirlines, Flitetest, and just a small handful of others contribute greatly to the hobby! I think that the sharing of building techniques, refinements, tips, & tricks benefit scratchbuilders the world over! I became interested in the RC hobby for the first time (at the ripe age of 66) after spending time with one of my grandsons. We bought a cheap Harbor Freight "Yellow Bee" plane then he got first crack at flying it. Very first try it broke a wing and he lost interest. I took it home, repaired it, studied up on the basics, then had success flying it later on. I am now hooked on this hobby and have done several successful scratchbuilds since then. I subbed to your channel and wish you the best. Will

is that carbon fiber you are cutting there? Its better to wear some breathing protection and also try to keep dust and chips contained (like sucking it away with a vaccum-cleaner)...just if you want to keep your lungs healthy of course (and that of your viewers...)
@AndrewNewton

Yes good points thanks. I do wear a mask but had not thought of vacuuming up the dust.
@zezoar
@zezoar 8 жыл бұрын
before i forget it: if using vaccuum you should use some industrial-grade vacuum with special (HEPA) filter or water/oil-filtration because normal-filters dont really work on carbon-fiber. if you use a normal filter: only use that filter for this pupose and don't clean any living room with that filter because it cant contain carbon-fiber residue. another possibility, which is more suitable for hobby-uses imo is to work under wet-conditions like using wet-grinding-paper, or try to wet the file and the carbon-rod so the water can bind the produced dust. Also its good to use some (wet) news-paper or sth to collect all the dust and grinding-residue onto, so you dont need a broom (which would only spread the carbon-dust into the air) sorry for my english i hope it's understandable :) anyways i love your videos and ideas, big thumbs up!

George Stephen and very easy to whack a straight spar back in if the experiment doesn't work. But I tried it sloping yesterday and it flew like a dream, so smooth.

Wow....I had this idea in my mind few days ago...about how to to do dihedral wing....after seen a good video from Experimental Airlines...I thought to use two tubing of aluminum for rigidity at the proper angle....but after seen you video...I think one is more than enough.... Very good work!!! Would like to see a photo of the dihedral wing over the fuselage...and how well the rubber band hold the wing in top without dancing... Thanks

I did put small wedges of foam between the wing and fuselage to stop it rocking.

Good day Andrew. Hope you have been out flying. Good to see your finger has been healing up nicely. How do you know what degree of angle for dihedral. is more better for higher wind or less? plane 1115 gr wing 1430x190 (includes ailerons) fuselage 920, Also on one of your other videos you modified there motor angle on a pusher, what is a good angle to start off with there as well. Sure liked those engine mounts that changed the mounting angle, very cool. I will use washers until I break down and get that 3d printer. Thanks in advance for all your knowledge sharing. Jeff
@AndrewNewton

From memory 6º is a good starting angle. Dihedral is best for light wind slow flying. Not useful in strong and turbulent wind.

@hspeed3656 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewNewton Thanks Andrew, so in windy condition ( like I've being having here for several days now 18km) very challenging for me to say the least. I might be better off with little to no dihedral Jeff

Thats interesting as you are emulating full size sailplane wing joining...as well as making it easier to experiment...I was hoping you would comment on the difference in flying with the dihedral versus flat...??...Rgds...Laurie
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 10 жыл бұрын
LWJCarroll Thanks Laurie. I haven't done a decent side by side comparison yet. Quick impressions with dihedral, it flies smoother with less input required. Aerobatic performance is slowed down. Decalage issues are amplified.

Nice one Andrew, I also like where the Ailerons servo feeds come out the Fuz, very novel. I suppose the advantage of the diahedral is that it will turn in a little better and slowly self right itself?... Oh, btw, I did my first FPV flight the other day on my AXN, I have a clip up...and my first fpv scratch build in Depron is nearing completion.....:)
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, a little bit of dihedral calms down the flight characteristics, really need to re-test it slope soaring for a proper comparison. I suspect dihedral also exaggerates decalage issues for powered flight. If the leading edge is sitting up at all then adding dihedral will make the plane loop up under power, no matter where the CG is. This wing needed packing under the trailing edge to make it sit flat. Congratulations on the FPV flights and I'm looking forward to seeing your build.

Transmitter joystick goes right ,right aileron goes up. I thing dihedral angle is more in wing if i reduce it it work fine. Or if with ailerons wing have a flat (without dihedral) it work. I try at this Sunday. I made many trainer plans. Now want to take next step that's wings with aileron's. I know im new in this hobby. Thanks Andrew.

When I cut a carbon spar, I use a half round needle file and slowly rotate the spar as I file it. The file is obviously much finer than even a junior hacksaw, so there is no fraying of the carbon at the cut.

@@AndrewNewton The one downside to cutting carbon fiber is the fibers that are cut can be light enough to become airborne and it's really nasty stuff to breathe in. A vacuum hose placed near to the point of cutting and some good PPE should help to limit any of these health hazards. As always, I enjoy your quick remedies, solutions and videos. Thanks Andrew!
