First time encountering Kim Burrell was actually live. I was in the audience of a Chritsian show. Didn't know who she was before then but everyone else did. She only sang a little but I knew who she was ever since after that. I was very truly inspired that day by her sharing/preaching not even singing at first. Needless to say Kim is awesome

I think she meant "bad" in the sense that she didn't actually sound like KIm Burrell. She still sounded good though. But usually, when imitates a singer, she sounds EXACTLY like them. Kim Burrell has a husky voice, nearly impossible to imitate.

Dexterous is a word. Btw. Your analyses are beautiful in competency and knowledge. I just love it; you. Your mastery of vocals is phenomenal. This one may be a stretch, but could you dissect Fantasia? She has tons of examples online, including jazz standards and broadways stuff. Her Christmas album shows her control well, in my opinion. There’s even some clips of her singing opera w/ Andrea Bocelli. One of my personal favs is her Lady Marmalade tribute to Patti and her Aretha tributes as well. Please unpack her talent to explain why her voice and style is unique. Thank you so much, sis!

Hey Dileesa...excellent analysis on Kim Burrell's vocals. I agree with you 100%. If I had to add anything, it would be her attitude and her sense of humor. Singers who sing with attitude are Aretha, Whitney and certainly Vanessa Bell Armstrong. And still, Kim doesn't take herself too serious. She's quite the funny girl. And so, this opens her up to attempt, produce and ultimately deliver whatever she's going for. Sidenote: When Stevie Wonder heard her singing (probably on tape), he sent for her. That speaks volumes and confirms what you said about Kim being among the top vocalists.

I loved this analysis!!! Kim B is one of my favorite vocalist of all time as well. I wish you could have delved into her vocal technique a bit more (runs, jazzy voice, scats) all of us real singers are forever studying her runs. Lol. Other than that, spot on.
@Dileesa
@Dileesa 7 жыл бұрын
Toure Richardson thanks! What do you mean delve in? Like discuss the scales she uses? On that I have no clue. There is definitely a pattern she uses but I don't study scales by using theory I just listen for the 'shape' that a person tends to make with their runs
@ToureSings
@ToureSings 7 жыл бұрын
Dileesa Hunter When I said delve into her vocal technique, yeah, I definitely meant like scales she tends to use in her singing which you just brought up in your reply. Lol. That's interesting on how you analyze singers runs and the tone they produce based on the shape of their vowels or phrasing.
@Dileesa
@Dileesa 7 жыл бұрын
Toure Richardson yea when I said shape.. I guess that's what I see when when people sing. I feel their accent points and how they phrase and attack their their lines. I feel like a line graph I guess lol . And each singer has their own pattern they repeat over and over again. Whitney, Tamar, Beyoncé, Jazmine, Brandy, Kim Mary Nary, they're only human so they're creatures of habit.. they do the same or similar things over and over and it adds unique character to their voice. I don't do the theory to figure it out I just learn to anticipate it when listening or singing their their songs
@dejaallen9698
@dejaallen9698 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dileesa I absolutely agree with the whole anticipate thing cuz when I listen to certain singers especially Ms Burrell I always anticipate or I guess someone say I feel like I know what she's going to do because she does it in so many songs

interesting. I find her to be a very melismatic singer. that can be a great thing but it can be an annoying thing to listen to over and over. It does take special skill and control to be able to be a runny type of singer. and another commenter mentioned something that I thought I was the only one that noticed but, she doesn't have a clear tone. It sounds like she needs to always clear her throat. It sounds very phlegmy and like she is straining all the time. but, everybody likes what they like and I never saw what the big deal was about her, other than she is very melismatic.

Kim Burrel sings harmonies within her singing and she is very unique about that, she has a very unique way of finding notes that are harmonies within what she is singing, it's incredible but I didn't know until now and reading the comments about the LGBT thing and am very sad about it... Gotta make the distinction between classical and church vocal classifications. Black gospel singers are typically incorrectly classified by people who aren't classically trained. I can sing tenor in church however I'm classically classified as a baritone. Karen clark would be a mezzo soprano and Kim would be alto for sure!

Dileesa Hunter I bet a lot of people would think Donnie McClurkin in is a tenor but he is classified baritone. She is master church chest belting.

ebony omar I don't quite agree with you ... voice classification is not rocket science and Karen Clark sheard would never be classified as a mezzo in this life and the next not by any standards and donnie is a dramatic tenor there is nothing baritone about his voice.... sometimes I wonder why Jennifer Hudson is classified as a mezzo would really love @dileesa's view on that ...I mean it makes no sense , she's comfortable than most sopranos in her upper register

ok..I will give her Soprano assoluta..if not mezzo. Karen, classically speaking, would have a strong mezzo tone. BTW are you classically trained?

I love your videos. I am a person who studies a persons voice as well. I have a few people I would like for you to do an analysis on: Cynthia Erivo, Morgan James, Mykal Kilgore, and Maiya Sykes. Thanks!

I have to heavily disagree on this one. Kim sounds straight up alto, & it sounds like she only has 1 octave of range & she just runs all up & down them 8 notes. And I've never heard her sustain a note for more than 1/2 a millisecond. She don't do nothing for me.

she is overrated and overconfident. accurate runs but i couldnt listen to a whole cd of hers. she does have an agile versatile voice. I use to go to her church in Houston. her voice is very light on top and heavy on bottom she sings in her mix 95 percent of the time.

Amazing how such a prolific singer can't even break 1 million in sales. With all the exposure she has had prior to the incident with gays.

God wasn't gonna bless that nasty ass attitude. He knew her black tainted heart from the jump. She'd use a gay stylist or producer any day though.
