Yes I've finally found this short that I saw before Return of the Jedi in June 1983!! Truly mesmerising images and music. The anti war messages are clear now as they were then. What a great piece of my childhood!

@@Duvmasta Yes. I saw it at Warrington Odeon in 1983 (5 times!) and this was on first. Been looking for it for years...thought it was called "Time" for some reason! Had a big effect on me. top stuff for the time!

OK, this is strange... I had a clear recollection of watching a CGI short named 'Dilemma' in my youth - very probably ahead of Return of the Jedi as has been said in other comments - and the recurring pendulum motif is certainly a match... But the details are very different. The only other bit that left an abiding impression was the sequence of fish-like spacecraft being swallowed up by progressively larger craft but, in my memory, they were flat-shaded 3D CGI - like something out of TRON or The Last Starfighter, or like the end-of-level bosses in the Darius videogames - not cartoon. I don't recall any music, but I was sure there was a very oppressive ticking as the pendulum crossed the screen.
