1. Bigger, metal crate. 2. You need to spend much more time draining her energy 3. She may have some separation anxiety. 4. She’s still teething so she’ll chew and she needs to. 5. Tell the boys to stop raising their arms as their way of trying to keep her away from them. 6. The energy of the boys is exciting her, raising her energy level. 7. She needs to be crated in your room at night, that is most comforting to her. Get into professional training ASAP.

That's true about the raising of the arms. We had to tell our neighbour's kid to stop doing that to our puppy. It eggs them on and they think it's play time and want to start play biting the hands and then everywhere. He even bit our kids on the rear end. You'll know the bites are just for play if the tail is wagging but you still want to discourage it and teach her to play with humans in other ways. I've learned the hard way with our 60 pound sweetie pie dog.....but we learned!

OMGosh! Please keep that dog inside! Also she doesn t want to be in the inside crate because it s too small!!!!! Get her a bigger crate. Keep her in your room where she feels like she s part of the family. She will get destructive if left alone too long. Dogs are pack animals. After the first couple of nights you can probably just leave her crate gate open. Train her to go in when you tell her to. Teach her to stay. If you can t train her yourself get her a trainer. Throw balls or sticks for her. Over and over and over again. Every single day. She looks like she needs a lot of exercise. Why would you tie her up inside!! I am 65 yes old. My whole adult life I ve had rescues. Most of the time 2 dogs at a time. Not one dog has been a young puppy, all have been very energetic and a couple have been a little troubled. All of them about the size of Fenna or larger. You have to train her to be a part of your pack. Inside with you. Your yard is not big enough for that dog to just be amused out there all alone. She s bored out of her mind and a little angry that she s been shunned and banished out there all alone while her family is inside. And a good harness is better than that collar. You can control them better. A good one and relatively inexpensive is Easy Walk no pull harness. There are so many things to work on with her. I think tons of exercise is your answer along with training and keeping her with you all.

ALL 5 of our dogs were inside pets throughout our 48 years of marriage and here's our take on what we've learned. 1. Patience: she needs time to adjust and so do you all. Once she is comfortable knowing she won't be alone, she will calm down. She loves being with her people and is curious as to where everyone is. Tethering her to the table with her leash causes anxiety because she's still curious about her surroundings and where the rest of her 'pack' is. It's only been 3 days! 2. Crate: it's a large wire enclosure with a door and a solid floor; she should be able to stand up and turn around. Old towel inside is ok, (rub it on each of you to transfer your scent) but NOT her bed. No toys or bone either. You purchased an animal carrier (for transporting small pets), which isn't appropriate for a dog her size. 3. Sleeping outside: This will confuse her and elevate her anxiety because she won't understand why she's being isolated or 'punished' for unknown reason. Letting her sleep in a crate at night in the extra room is the best solution. You did a great job calming her that night when she was in there. However, she was cramped in the small carrier and uncomfortable. The wire sides of the larger crate allow her to see her surroundings and feel secure. 4. ROUTINE!!! I realize it's hard with two young, energetic boys, but getting EVERYONE into a routine will go a long way in creating a successful, calm home for Fenna. Everything is new to everyone and so, as you said, there have to be boundaries. Just like you told the boys about not touching her bone or her food, there are rules for good doggy / child interaction in the house. BUT consistency is key. Fenna appears to be quite intelligent so with repetition, she'll learn appropriate behaviors. Feed in the morning, water available all day, potty time and nap as needed, exercise in the yard as much as possible, then doggy dinner around 5-6 PM, family time (either inside or outside) and then a walk before bedtime -- the longer the better. She already has the idea of going to the door for potty, so just be alert to when she wants out. However, leaving her alone outside any longer than it takes for her to potty isn't the best option. She may want to run the yard or play fetch before returning inside (both excellent ways of releasing energy); she needs active outlet for her energy. 6. LOVE!!! shower her with praise when she's had successes. It all takes time; so let yourselves adjust day by day without self-criticism. Peace be to you and yours.

dogs are pack animals and not meant to be alone outside. it's fine for them to be in a crate at bedtime, but should be by your bed so you can lay your hand beside the crate and tell them it's ok. a dog left outside alone is like leaving a 2 year old alone outside unsupervised. and the breed she is, she needs a job - - something to do with her time. I would have not recommended this breed for a first time dog owner. Having a trainer is a fabulous idea. . . .keep it up.

Please don't keep her outside alone. It's so cruel to isolate animals like that. They are pack animals and have a strong desire to be a part of the pack. You guys are her pack, you chose her to be a part of your pack. Heavy exercise during the day will help her settle better at night. Curled up on that chair outsidr she is cold! Her fur isn't long and full like huskys or labs, her short hair isn't much insulation for cold weather. Maybe get her a sweater. Look up KZbin videos on how to train her not to jump up on people. She's a smart dog, she will learn quickly. Why is she on a leash in the house? Is she peeing everywhere? Not sure why she isn't allowed to go through the house. Letting her investigate the entire house will likely help calm her down. Being leashed all the time would feel so constrictive and cause anxiety.

Basic rules. No outside unless you can watch her. More to the point go out and play with her! No negative training techniques, i.e. pepper spray or leashing to chairs. Once she starts obedience training put her in a sit/stay in the room near the kitchen but do not let her in there while you're eating. After praise her, give her love and treats. At night put her in one room, with limited access to things, and let her just relax. Play with regulate the energy and family time will teach her to behave.

I have had four rescue dogs as an adult and I can say that the dog you have now is not the dog you will have. She has been traumatized. She will be needy and insecure for about 12-18 months in my experience. Then she will be so much more comfortable and feel safe. However, crate training is probably impossible with a dog that feels so insecure. If you think of the dog like a foster child, you would probably hold it until it went to sleep, you wouldn’t lock it in a room. So I personally think you should just try to have the dog sleep next to your bed and not in a crate. If your yard is fenced in, get a dog door. It will change your life. The dog will be much more relaxed because it can go to the bathroom when it wants. Let the dog make decisions. If it wants to sleep indoors during the day and not play outside in the cold, let it make that choice. This is a time to build love and trust. It will be so worthwhile to put this effort in and the dog will bring so much joy to your family. It will also help you both become a little less rigid and more accepting of chaos. And the surprising fun you can have with a little dog chaos.

Personal opinion...please don't leave your dog outside and especially at night. Why does she have to sleep outside? Isn't she a family dog? She has anxiety, is scared, and longs for human companionship so she is barking, and being destructive. Especially her breed type, she is very smart and needs to be mentally stimulated and have an energy outlet. Dogs are companions and are happiest when with their people. Alone time!? That's not a thing (unless it's crate time but still with her people). This is a shelter dog who is displaying a ton of insecure and reactive behaviors already. It can take YEARS of positive reinforcement with even the best of trainers to overcome. Leaving her outside is a huge step in the wrong direction. (And I'm not referring to the cold although the temps you described are not great for her.) I'm afraid you guys don't know what you just got yourself into! Eek! You're going to have *major* problems that develop and FAST. Digging and ripping out trees will be the least of them. This has "adoption fail" written all over it. I've seen it over and over. I highly suggest "Dog Training by Kikopup". Emily can be found here on KZbin. It's a full-time job.🤞 p.s You can't tie her to the table and expect good behavior. You need to tie her to YOURSELF so you can watch her every move. Reward calm and settled behavior. p.p.s Digging is due to boredom and being left alone. You're getting the results you are setting yourself up for. p.p.p.s I foresee a nip at the kids coming up soon. No one is teaching them how to respect a dog, never mind one that comes pre-loaded with this many issues. I am surprised the shelter let her go to a home with little ones their age. Please watch them like a hawk when together!

My dogs only go outside to go to the bathroom and run around for 5-10 minutes then they come back in. She’s digging and tearing up trees out of boredom and being outside to long unsupervised. Hi. So, just a few things, from the outside looking in and as an owner to a working dog as well. Fenna shouldn't be tied to the table. She bit through the leash to get to you. If you get a leash she can't bite through, SHe's going to get so stressed and anxious and everything on that table will be thrown and ripped up and the table flipped over. She was literally just stuck in a cage and alone for who knows how long. Why would you isolate her further? You literally have an already trained dog. I've seen her multiple times walk over to her bed and lay down in it. That's a hard thing to show some dogs to do. All you need to do for bed time, is bring her bed to the end of your bed and tell her to lay down. SHe already knows that's where she lays down. You guys are making it harder than it is because you're treating her like she is a robot. She has feelings and emotions and she wants to be included in your family. Get her toys that stimulate her like a Kong. I get West Paw toys for my dog, like the Qwizl. I put treats in there and he is kept stimulated and enjoys it and he goes off and enjoys himself for a little bit trying to get the treat and then he NAPS. You can't ignore your dog outside and expect her to behave how you want her to. It's pretty obvious she is afraid of being left outside. Stop doing that to her.

It's next to impossible to adopt a dog here in New England. Seriously, you can get licensed to be a foster parent to humans before a shelter will give up a dog to you. And yes- they would storm the castle to retrieve a dog that was being left outside or tied up!

@@JessicaNiles it’s not abuse to leave a dog outside as long as the temps aren’t extreme and the dog has proper shelter (they need to add straw inside the dog house and a rug on the doorway for insulation). Ever heard of a sled dog? Ever even been out of the Northeast? Also, trespassing onto someone’s property and stealing their dog will get you shot in many places. Sounds like a trashy thing someone from the Northeast would do 🤷‍♀️ No respect. At least they are planning on taking her to training and took her to the vet. I’m sure they will get the advice they need from an ACTUAL professional. Getting/training a new dog can be exhausting. At least they’re be honest and are open to advice from the vet.

@@spants1058 I'm aware of outdoor dogs AND cultures outside of NE. Imagine that! I was speaking to the shelter workers who make visits and WILL remove a dog from a home if it's seen tied up outside or left to live outdoors for the majority of the time. Understand that the northeast is the area that takes in the rest of the country's unwanted animals because we actually spay and neuter them and find them appropriate families equipped to care for them (home checks are always a part of the process). Most of the people commenting need to relax. Adjusting to a new dog/puppy is an emotional roller coaster, and it’s natural to feel stressed/angry/scared/anxious. At least the Dillards are honest about their feelings and the stresses of adjusting to a new dog/new dog adjusting to its new home. They are at least understanding that they need to work with her, and are taking her to training/taking advice from a trainer. They seem to have been unaware of crate training- I was as well when I got my dog. I had no idea you have to ease them into it. Malinois are an extremely high maintenance breed that need to be constantly stimulated. They do not make good pets. That being said, they are doing the right thing by taking her for multiple runs a day. They are still learning. It’s not like they are dumping her back at the pound. People need to relax.

She is a heavy duty working dog, not a backyard pet. I have a colleague with a Malinois. She does police type training and agility every day and competes in obedience trials. I don't mean to be harsh, but it isn't fair to her to expect her to be a well behaved pet while living in the backyard and just going for walks every day. I wish the shelter had done more pre-selection counseling to make sure you got a pet that matched your lifestyle. Please discussed options for obedience and agility work with your trainer. She'll also make a good running partner when she learns not to resist the leash.

She’s bored outside. You need to bring her in and keep her with the family and maybe even put her crate where she can see you at night. I always put a blanket over the crate so it makes it seem like it’s a cave or shelter. They like that feeling of security. And until she’s older and likes being outside alone, you are going to have to keep her with you all the time. She needs to be inside with the family. She’s a puppy (like a toddler) and she’s bored and feels alone outside. As she gets older she may want to be outside by herself from time to time, but not right now.

Fenna is not making bad choices- you are. Notice how when Fenna chewed through her leash in the kitchen she went right to to you? She was not being bad, just wanted to be with her human. You could possibly put a baby gate at the door, to keep her in the room (if she doesn’t jump it), but I’d load her up with toys and what not, and keep her bed in there. Eventually, she’ll associate that room with “bed time”, and will be content in there. If she does wake up in the night, and has room to walk around and play, she may just lay back down until you all wake up.

We just adopted our first dog. Since the first night she has slept in bed with my teenage boys that share a room. She sleeps so peacefully with them because she feels secure and comforted. The only time we put her in her wire crate is when we leave home and we cannot bring her (usually an hour at most). We do not want her to get into something that could hurt her while we are not home so we put her in the wire crate. Other than that she is never in the crate. She lays in our beds with us and we rub her belly and cuddle with her. I think you should consider treating the dog more like a family member.

From the main page of the AKC: "The smart, confident, and versatile Belgian Malinois is a world-class worker who forges an unbreakable bond with his human partner. To deny a Mal activity and the pleasure of your company is to deprive him of his very reasons for being." This is a super hyper active dog and they are smart. You will only create more stress and disappointment for yourself trying to "deter" her actions only, she needs to be active and part of the family. Active does not mean a once or twice a day "family" walk. You will need to find something that will wear her out and challenges her mind. Also, since she has been spayed at an early age she will take quiet a bit of time to come out of the puppy stages of chewing. Some tips from a life long dog owner, and my cousin is a vet tech. 1. Get a harness for walks. Do you want someone pulling on your throat or your waist/arm to move you? 2. It is truly cruel to leave your animals outside unless they are built for that. Such as a husky. You have a short haired dog. See the difference? 3. Digging = bored, unhappy, upset, etc. stop leaving her outside. She’ll probably stop digging. 4. She’s a large dog. That crate and dog house is tiny.
