Dillards Take The Oregon Trail! -Day 1 (Part 1/10)

We road tripped from Arkansas to Oregon (less than 100 miles difference in distance than the actual, historic Oregon Trail)! It took us 3 days to get there (much better than the 4 months or so the pioneers had to endure)! Once in Oregon, we visited lots of friends and saw many places, from Portland to the Seaside & Newport coasts, including Astoria, Eugene and Bend! Then we made the 3 day trek back home, stopping on the way to see some of the actual wagon tracks left by those who took the original Oregon Trail many years ago!

When I was 32 years old back in 1990 we drove from Rhode Island to Colorado Springs. We drove 24 hours a day and it took us 2 and one half days. I remember Kansas as such a flat state. It was a long drive across. Then when got to my Dad's way up in the mountains so beautiful. Loved going there!

I love the maps you made them. I used to get books on where we were going and make up questions to answer in open book tests. Then they would get presents or spending money for the trip! When we went to Williamsburg,VA they knew about what they were gonna see and do! They are grown now and still talk about it!

I have great memories of road trips as a child! My dad took our family of 6 to Montana and other states. Your boys will have great memories! Also where I live in Iowa our Wal Mart super center does not have a gas station.

Oh what memories watching your road trip stirred up for me. Very happy memories too. My husband and I ha ve two sons (they are currently 38 and 37) Like you guys, we loved road trips. However, we lived on a very tight budget. In order to travel and have vacations we would pack food for a picnic...I packed 4000🤣 sandwiches for our trips!) We would stop at a park along our route to eat and let boys run. We lived on a very tight budget so we were always looking for ways to stretch a dollar yet made sure our boys traveled outside ofour state! As a child, I recall my parents packing “hoagies” for us to eat when we traveled. . Funny as I LOVED those picnics at the various rest areas along our route. Never did I dream my parents packed our food in order to stretch a dollar. I just thought we were so very fortunate. my parents were very creative when it came to vacationing on a tight budget . Mom even made a big thermos of koolaid too (my boys weren’t as lucky. I brought water on our family outings.)

Thank you for taking the time to share these types of videos with your fans and viewers. I am presuming that Derick did not take the bar this summer. As someone who took both the Missouri and Illinois bar exams, I can’t imagine trying to study for the bar exam while taking a family vacation of this magnitude. Since Derick has his CPA, is he going for an LLM in taxation? I have to hand it to the tax law lovers out there…it takes a special kind of personality to want to deal with the tax code all day, every day. G-d bless ya.

I find driving 12 hours a day much to hard on me. I prefer six or so hours of driving and integrating in sightseeing along the way. It's the journey not the destination! I like to drive three hours in the morning, spend lunch and several hours after enjoyiing the sights of the town I'm in, then 3-5 more hours of drving towards dusk. The kids were AMAZING in the car ride! I would have been squawking and I'm 49! LOL. ARE WE THERE YET???
