I live near Salem Oregon and grew up going to end of the Oregon trail as field trips. My mom and I enjoyed going back a few years ago. Its usually pretty quiet. There's a room to try on vintage clothing. Candle making, notebook to make. Its really amazing to think about how people traveled, died or survived the journey.
@sarahstrand4393 жыл бұрын
I feel your embarrassment with the fuel situation. I've been in Oregon most of my life and the first few times I drove out of state myself I forgot that other states pump their own fuel so I just sat in my car for 5 minutes waiting for someone to come do it for me. I felt so dumb having to ask someone show me how to pump it myself.
@ElizabethAnneReads3 жыл бұрын
That's the worst thing about road trips when you are a native Oregonian! My first trip with just girls (no dad or brothers to do it) we pulled up to a gas station and we all just looked at each other...uh...we don't know how to do this...I literally watched a little old lady do it and told myself if she can do it, so can I! Hahaha

I live on a little tiny Island on the East Coast of Canada, and our gas stations here have a similar thing. Most of them will have the option to pump your own gas (self service), and also pumps where they will fill it for you (full service). Because full service requires an attendant, it actually costs a bit more, so most people opt for the self service anyway. So if you're ever in Eastern Canada, look at the top of the pumps, and it will tell you if it is a self or full service pump you are pulling into.

I will say, having your fuel pumped for you is a thing- I haven’t seen it in years… it’s called “full service.” I grew up in a small town on an Indian reservation in Western, NY- they had full service- actually still do at a few places. Here in North Carolina there are still gas stations that offer full service but not many that do it. If you pull up to the pump that says full service they pump your gas, clean your windows and check your oil, washer fluid and antifreeze. It does cost a little extra but they don't automatically charge for tips but they do expect you to tip them.
@lindaburkhardt64303 жыл бұрын
To bad you didn't have enough time to enjoy Ft. Clatsop. It's a really interesting place "inside" but you do need time. Would have been very educational for your boys. I think they would have loved all the "frontier" experiences there. We lived in Seattle area for 12 years and love it, but like Portland it has changed for the worse. That being said I think your family would enjoy a Washington trip; the coast, Mt. Rainier. the Olympic peninsula, rainforest, Twisp ... the possibilities are endless!

You pump your own gas in North Carolina too. Back in the day, having someone pump for you was considered part of full service. They'd wash the windshield, check the oil, etc.. Gone are the days. Some gas stations picked the pumping because they had a lot of drive offs. Then they installed cameras to take a picture of your tags and your face.

In Western PA it used to be a bit of a mix. I had been to places where it was full service, and places where it was self service. It was surprising to see all of the full service stations in New Jersey. The full service stations have been pricier, in my experience, but you get what you pay for.

Hi Jill & Derek & kids! My husband and I did the same thing in NJ when we stopped for gas. It was winter so the person had a heavy jacket with fake fur around the neck. My husband thought the guy was going to mug him. I sat in the car & reacted like u. It was before cell phones with Google. We had no idea there were states that pumped ur gas. Now I'm originally from Vermont & there its both. In places where they pump they have signs that tell u this. They also have signs that say self pump. No confusion 🙂

So weird to see you at that Korean BBQ place, it’s a half-mile from my house! But I can tell you with certainty that it’s NOT *downtown* Portland. 😂 Still Portland though! Oh and the reason you pumped your own fuel at the Love’s in Eastern Oregon is that a few years back, Oregon passed a law allowing it in counties with very low populations, basically to make it so people could still fuel up at night with a card even if the station was closed.

Most of Oregon someone else comes out to pump your fuel, but just to make it confusing there are some places that you can pump your own. They are mostly in eastern Oregon when the population is less dense. There are also some places that it depends on what time it is. It also can depend on your vehicle, like you can fill your own motorcycle. Don't worry if you visit here, people aren't going to be that upset.

I live in Nebraska and as far as I know, there is still 1 gas station that the attendant comes out and pumps your gas, washes your windows and will check all your fluids for you. For a minute when pulling up to said gas station you feel as though you've gone back in time and it reminds me of The Andy Griffith show. Lol.
