Thank you for your interest in my ancestral history. You are intelligent and did a fine job in this essay. I'm a proud middle-aged Haitian American man from Flatbush, Brooklyn, and regardless of the present situation in Haiti, I am most proud of our history! Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines are my heroes, and they were men of incredible strength, intelligence, cunning, and courage! They were powerful conquerors and have their place in history. White supremacy was conquered under their leadership, and they will NEVER forgive us for this! This is a perfect example of the reality of racism being prevalent in modern society. Our victory and freedom are a history and monumental feat that has been hidden for a reason!

I am also a soon to be middle aged man also of Haitian heritage. How do you explain the infighting between Haitians (African born versus island born Blacks versus gens de couleur). I would appreciate an explanation for the never ending infighting among us that begin even before Jan 1, 1804 and continued well into the 1915 occupation and beyond. Thanks

Thank you for the excellent discussion. This is a wonderful book. One of the other chapters that stood out to me, along with the ones you mention, was his discussion on the the production of Columbus as a 'discoverer' and the U.S.'s de-facto americanization and adoption of Columbus as a U.S. founding father - a narrative that has in many ways erased Columbus's role in the Caribbean and obscured the fact that he never set foot on U.S. soil.

Metaphisics of silence and ethics of forgetting are lovely terms... These remembrance days always bothered me. l see them as sort of remember to take your revenge days.. l always admired silence of 1 million+ Muslim refugees from Balkans between 1890s until 1950s including my family l raised with that conciousness happy to hear these nice terms that l can use from now on Thanks
