Dillon 550 9mm Load Series pt 1 - Setting up the 550

In this video we are setting up the Dillon 550 for 9mm. Covering all of he components and tools to load 9mm 124 gn Hornady XTP. Installation of the Dillon 9mm / 38 super caliber conversion. 550 Tool head and roughing in the powder measure and failsafe rod.

I put my new 550C together today. Everything went good until I went to load a case into the shell plate - the case didn't slip smoothly into the shell plate. When I went to load a case it seemed to meet an obstruction and I had to lift it a bit to get the case to slide in. I guess I wasn't paying attention to detail because I think I put the dang shell plate in up-side-down. I'll flip it tomorrow. This morning, I checked and I did put the shell holder in up-side-down, Now I can load a case smoothly, also, I had the increase the compression of that spring that makes sure the powder measure is fully back.

Great series Squatch I have the 550b for a few years.And I only have 1 machine still have a problem setting the shell plate and with the primers not seating fully in their cases at first correctly it just takes a while any hints on my problem tyaot

I'm new to the Dillon 550 and havent loaded any rounds yet, still learning to run it really. Question on powders, is it better with any one type? I know alot of people use ball powders with these but I see you are using Unique which is a favorite of mine. Have you ever tested variable charge weights with Unique on the 550? Another favorite is CFE Pistol which meters so much better, but I think Unique is a touch more accurate in 45ACP. My only complaint with Unique after its metering is availability haha

Loaded about 1500 .45acp casings with no problems. Changed over to 9mm and swapped the large primer slide and tube out for the small version for this caliber and am having problems with the primer feed. I have removed and checked the slide multiple times to insure proper installation and cannot figure out why the primers are not always being inserted into the primer cup from the feeder tube. The slide appears to be going all the way back when the handle is pulled down. I have found that a slight tap with my hand when the slide is all the way back generally (but not always) results with a primer in the cup. I cannot see any adjustment that will help this, but there must be one. Help!!

I'm going to start reloading nine millimeters, Does the tool head come with the actual press? Or is it separate questioremark one final question? How much is the 3 dies that I need to completely prime shell? And projectile oil if that makes sense. I am completely new to all of this. So please excuse if I don't get the terminology correct. I just started this process I set up my dies I cast my bullets from the 365-125 Lee six cavity mold. When I everything was said and done the bullet has all the right specs with the length and width but it still does not chamber I was wondering if you have any suggestions. I'm using Lee dies I have all four factory crimp. Also I can spin the bullet in the casing so it's not crimping right

Sounds like a sizing die issue. Are you using new brass by chance and not sizing them?

I’m just getting into pistol as well as reloading. I have 9mm,357 and 50AE. I also have rock chucker and Area 419 Zero press. Starting reloading on the Zero. Takes a LONG time. Would like to keep my presses however would like to get a Dillion for pistols. Rifle calibers I use is .223,.270,6.5PRC, 7mm, 280AI and 30-30. What Dillion should I use? I plan to shoot quite a bit. All personal preference. It all depends on what I feel like doing there is no wrong or right way. Personally I like recapping before hand.

Hey quick and random question. I have a hornady AP 5 step and I’ve had a Dillon XL650 I’ve never set up yet but am going too, so I can gift my hornady. But do the hornady shell plates fit on the Dillon. There’s no answers online I can find.

Ok so the Hornady shell plates are exclusive to that press. You will need Dillon conversion kits that come with the shell plates you need.

I have noticed that my spent primers are not going into the spent primer holder effectively after de capping the shell casing. Any ideas or adjustments on how to fix this?

This is a problem with the 550. The first thing I would do is remove the cotter pin holding the spent primer church together and replace it with a solid pin like a paper clip. The cotter pin tends to keep the chute from opening fully or at all.

I have seen some people selling machines on eBay for crazy prices do to back orders. Dillon pricing on their website is pretty much what it is even at their dealers. Used machine are 80% new cost if that gives you an idea.

What is the reason you use deprimed cases? Is it to ensure the primer pocket is clean? Is there a problem depriming in the reload process?

It is just a personal preference. I like to ensure the primer pockets are clean to confirm flash holes are clear and the primer seats smoothly.

After depriming 5 shells as you showed, my 124 g bullets fall into the case. How do I fix the problem with Station1 (550B)? I'm new to Dillon loaders, my friend gave me the 550B before he moved.

Do you have your sizing die all the way down to the shell plate? Also confirm the correct die.

The diameter after sizing should be .374 ish if that is close then back out your expander and make sure you are not over flaring. Also check your bullet diameter. Should be .355 .356 for 9mm

It is hit or miss. They have de monetized quite a bit of our videos. The monetization is nice as it goes back into the channel but we never planned on making any money from it. Rumble may be a better alternative however the following isn’t there yet.

Just a heads up, you can get a set of Swiss made calipers on eBay for the same price as new harbor freight. I break a set about every year so I keep a couple on hand.

What model of 550 some older models use a different spring setup. You can upgrade to the failsafe system as well.
