Theres only two people on KZbin or anywhere else that I've heard actually be able to truely get the sounds of the original players, and actually play like them, too. I used the USA, Bill & Becky and the SH-13 in various guitars. The Bill & Becky eventually turned out to be my favorite.

Cool Vid, Ola! "Food for Thought", for sure. Subjectively speaking, I like the sound of the BL USAs best in this "comparo". That said, I have found that the BEST test of a pickup is how satisfying a "clean" sound can be produced with EQ settings as close to "centered" as possible. The better it sounds in this circumstance, the better when "pushed and dirtied". In my personal experience, I have not yet found an equal to the Dimebucker with this test.

I think the SD sounds significantly darker (and noisier) than the other two, especially noticeable in the staccato part around 2:10. Between the OB and the BL USA it's hard to decide :) They are very similar. In the mix I liked the OB a tad bit better. Cool video 🤘

You hit it on the head- it’s not just the pickups, the different guitars even if they’re the same will sound different. I’ve got four USA dime dean’s- fbd (Duncan distortion), southern cross, slime razorback, and a stealth. The latter 3 all have dmt/dimbucker and they all sound significantly different, about as different as the 3 guitars in your video! Really blew me away how 3 very similar builds could all sound that different with the same pickups.

I own the original Bill Lawrence dual rail pickups from the late 80s. The exact ones Dime used and let me tell you, the moment I dropped one in my Jackson Kelly it came to life!

I liked the Dimebolt most, but all of them sounded great on different parts of the riff. Some sounded better with palm mutes and others with open chords or faster riffs.

Its difficult to say between the OB and USA. The SD is my least favorite. I think I like them in the same order you had them stacked in the video. Great playing Ola! You are so knowledgeable on everything Dime and always have his tone dialed! You should be the Pantera tribute band guitarist! 💯

I’m not an expert on Pantera, but I like a lot the band. Once said this, to me the Original has the feeling of the CFH record and maybe a little of the VDOP too. The USA model (my favorite) is in the vibe of the VDOP and the Dimebucker is ideal for all the extreme work Pantera did for their last albums. Interesting video Ola, as all that you have in both channels 😊

The original bill lawrence 500 xl not the USA honestly in my opinion sounds like Dimebag and even some van halen . I have a dime with it in it and it definitely does dime justice

I'm surprised you didn't include the Duncan Distortion neck as well. That was what he used in his FBD ML along with a Dimarzio Super D in the neck.

Nice video, I really would like to hear the difference between the pickups, but with harmonics and in the way Dime used to play, something that interests me was the sustain of some of his recordings, like cemetery gates, at the end of the song we can really hear the guitar screaming

I was looking to get an upgrade for some dual slug pups in a guitar. I was looking at BL and this seals the deal. I need it for low tuning and this seems solid for that. I can switch the current pup to my new strat since it is more ballsy for riffing than the basic single coil.

Ola, please do an honest review of Fokin pickups whether they can really compete with famous manufacturers. In particular, I am interested in the "Emperor" and "Berserk" models, thanks in advance.

The first BL sounds like it has more bass, the second BL sounds a bit more even between bass and trebles, and the Dimebucker sounds more treble leaning. I also personally prefer the USA version, but they all sound great. None of them are drastically different. They all still sound plenty like Dime and then you can tweak and refine the tone from there with the amp/cab/pedals. And yes, the guitars may make each sound a bit different. Ola needs to try this again with the same three guitars! 😬🤭

I agree with you. I think the US one sounded gnarly without being too harsh. I have one in my N4 and it sounds awesome. It is the 500L in my Guitar, I believe, rather than the XL, but I don't think there's a world of difference.

I like them all. Got a Washburn N2 from a friend that took the 500 out of it first, so I did a fresh wiring with a Dimebucker and SD Jazz. Topped it off with a real OFR and had coil splitting all around. That guitar sounds like a Tele with the Dimebucker split, it's kinda funny.

I like the Bill Lawrence USA L-500 XL. But what I think could be is the wiring and possibly different brand volume and tone pots. But I could be wrong on that. Anyway, great video and keep doing what you're doing.

Hi ola how do you set up your dual rectifier like the preamp bass middle and treble presence and also the switch on the back triode or pentode and vacuum tube or rectifier mode do you use channel 2 for one riff and channel 3 setup differently for lead thanks man and have a Nice day

Question for Ola: What's the real influence does the power amp section has in the final tone? If you get an external preamp and plug it direct on a DAW without a power amp section (or any kind of simulation of it) running an IR; and compare to this same preamp plugged in the fx loop of an amp and send the speaker out to a loadbox, and then to the DAW running the same IR. Have you ever tested something like this?

With you headed off to Petrucci camp, perhaps now would be a good time to compare the different Petrucci DiMarzio pickups between the CrunchLab/Liquifire and the Rainmaker / Dreamcatcher. Might help those contemplating an EBMM JP15 vs the Majesty as a new guitar.

Hi Ola I do have a question on how to eq a muddy pickups on a low range guitar . I've been really frustrated about my overly saturated amp (plugins) and I really do think it is the pickup that is the problem not the plugins in particular (If you recommend changing pickups, what pickup will I choose ) Thank you

So I'm curious about the OBL, as I hadn't heard of that one in any of the Dimebag debates. Also, I'm slightly more confused by the video. We didn't compare a Bill n' Becky with the USA, right? Also, which were you using in the DimeBolt? I thought the Bill Lawrence USA pickups had the branding on the front, and the Wilde Bill n Becky did not, like the one in the DimeBolt guitar.

Closed my eyes and finally decided the stealth with the original was the closest. The bolt being second with the usa, although both are basically a coin toss, and then the cross with the dimebucker being the farthest away by a pretty good leap. Sure surprised me! Only real noticeable difference between the original and the USA was the usa had a bit more low end and something going on in the 700-1200hz region.

Ola, great playing and nice reviews. I thought the USA Bill Lawrence L500XL sounded best in this mix. All really good pickups though. What about a Brass Block? The original Floyd came with a Brass block. This changes tone as well.

I used to buy and sell these on ebay 15 years ago. I had a pre-lawsuit LP copy that I put the Bill&Becky in(My personal favorite) and it lit tf UP! I had to convert the pots to 500K but SO worth it!!!

Ola clearly you need to just swap in the different pickups on the same guitar and do a comparison, that would eliminate the woodwork and build issue as well as other components. Alot of extra work for a similar outcome but it would be interesting!

I like the higher output of the Dimebucker but they all sound fantastic. but as Glenn Fricker will tell you the tone is more in the preamp and speaker cab (or emulator)

IMHO The L90XL is the #1 to find in good shape. Got one for Xmas in 1979. Cost my folks like 90.00 It was a big deal and it sounded incredible. Lower gain than L500 but more dynamic

I've had a USA Bill Lawrence in the bridge and Duncan full shred in my jackson dk2 for 20 years. It's an amazing combo. A friend had a dimebucker and liked the Bill Lawrence better too

I bought a Bill Lawrence Usa Xl500 for my Peavey HP and it seemed way happier on cleans even than the stock alnico paf style. Anyone who says they are only good for metal havent played them

That USA is the best sounding out of the testing. It seemed to have decent output and a crunchy/tight delivery all rolled into one. By far, the more notable of the three!

Throw all that gain on there and pickups make so little difference as do guitars. Great test. Moving the mic a quarter inch would make a bigger impact. Glenn Fricker @ SMG has been testing this quite a bit lately which pisses people off to no end.
