You should add peat moss for planting blueberries and also incorporate slow release organic sulphur to lower the pH of your soil for growing blueberries at home. Of you can just remove some of the soil and mix in 70% concrete sand combined with 30% peat moss and mix together to create the perfect soil for blueberries at home. Please call us with questions, as we want you to be successful growing blueberries at your house: (609) 561-5905

My five year old blueberries have grown about two feet since last year and are now about eight feet tall. The top couple of feet which is all leaves never had any fruit this summer, so do I need to chop the tops down or will the top growth produce fruit next year?
@dimeofarms
@dimeofarms 5 жыл бұрын
Cut back those tops and reduce the bush to no more than about 12 canes. Usually the ideal range is between 9 to 12 canes per bush. Taking out the old canes and allowing those new canes to develop and push out which is where your largest #berries will come from.

Okay I have a question, I have a blueberry bush (don't know exact age but probably about 3 years old) I had no idea that I have to prune it and so I let it grow. And obviously it has grown too much so I don't know how to prune it corretly. And I am confused because in all the vids about blueberries I've seen online, I've seen a type of bush but mine doesn't really look similar to them.It's branches are not redish, they are either green or brown and I guess it grew in a weird way, lower branches are pointed upwards but it's younger branches on the top grew horizontally 😅 does it because I have never pruned it? It has realy few fruits this year and all the fruit is at top branches that grew horizontally, if I prune it I have to cut them of as much as I understand. Will it get any harm from it?

The branches will turn a reddish color in the fall which is when the time for pruning is best. Often is the case that pruning blueberry plants or bushes should only occur when the bushes are larger and need to have some of the older canes removed. You should not have anymore than about 12 canes total coming from the base of the blueberry bush and should remove any twiggy growth on the bottom of the bush. But prune only when necessary, not necessarily every single year but to promote more vigor, growth and larger #blueberries. Thank you for your question: www.DiMeoFarms.com/blueberry-plants

I have very old bushes! Where to start? They are huge. Do I cut it way back? Help!
@dimeofarms
@dimeofarms 6 жыл бұрын
Well here's where you should start. Lots of people that have an old blueberry bush are afraid to prune it heavily because they think that doing so will end up killing it, but that's not the case. Pruning it back heavily will promote new growth, plant vigor, and greatly increase the size of the #blueberries once the new blueberry canes develop. You should cut it back so there are no more than about 9 to 12 canes coming up, and cut the bush down to a height of no higher than 4 to 6' feet tall. Then watch how many new shoots come up from the bottom. If it's not too old, you might be able to reinvigorate it back to it's youth. Our family has blueberry bushes up to 65 years old that are still producing nicely. Thank you for your question. Best regards: www.DiMeoFarms.com

Blueberry bushes need acidic pH of 4.5-5.5 in the southern land of California. The first 3 years they don't need pruning. The blueberry shrub needs moisted forest clearlyings, to grow about the same as a rose bush.
@dimeofarms
@dimeofarms 4 жыл бұрын
True but it's very easy to add acidity to the soil and lower the soil pH by simply planting with peat moss and then top dress mulch with pine bark for acidity or just add "Holly Tone" ... then when it comes time for pruning, you are correct that you can wait years to prune because the main purpose of pruning is to promote plant growth, vigor and to increase the size of the blueberries and for overall health of the blueberry bush when they get to large mature size. Thank you for your comments. www.DiMeoFarms.com

@@dimeofarms yes indeed I live in the central valley of California. I see the blueberry fields dressed, with pine bark, an they do add peat moss/landscape cloth during planting. I believe they wait three seasons, before pruning, this does inhibit growth, mainly because it's the second growth which produces blueberries. goo.gl/search/When+does+the+blueberry+plant+produce+blueberries How Long Does it Take Blueberry Plants to Produce? | Home ... Time to Maturity A blueberry bush is at least two or three years old before it is mature and established enough to bear fruit. During the first one or two growing seasons, you should pull off any flowers that appear on the bush to encourage your blueberry plant to concentrate its growth on its foliage and root system.

It appears you prune your bushes sometime after harvest and before fall. Some experts and growers warn against this due to concern about disease and pest infestation. On the same note, is leaving the cuttings in the field a danger of the same? I'm not criticizing, but just asking. It seems since berries produce on one year growth, right after harvest would be the optimum time to prune. Thanks

Leaving the brush in the row and brush cutting it with a mower is a good thing for two reasons. First, it helps to build up your soil with new organic matter lever to maintain soil health and also the plant grows off of it once it breaks down. Yes after harvest is a good time to prune but the DiMeo family prefers to prune the blueberry bushes during the winter months of December, January, February and March because it's always best to let the leaves fall off the bushes first so you can actually see inside the bush and have a much better idea what you are pruning. But sometimes, the are pruned right after harvest if the farm workers need something to do to keep them busy going into winter. www.DiMeoFarms.com

Many DiMeo Farms customers staring u-pick blueberry farms actually do in fact, grow grass between their blueberry field rows but, commercial blueberry growers often do not plant grass between the blueberry rows in the field. Its all a matter of what application your blueberry farm star-up, your berry field layout and what your overall berry production goals are. For those that main have the goal of generating the most pounds of blueberries per acre, often do not plant grass down the blueberry rows, but those that run a pick your own blueberry farms or agritourism farms often do plant grass in their berry fields so they kids don't get all muddy when they have families that com blueberry picking after it rains. All of the hand pruning is done first with loppers. We recommend the Corona 32" Orchard Lopper. Not cheapest kind or brand, but they are the best.
