You have to remember that at the time this came out, there was nothing like it. "Sid and Nancy" felt revolutionary at the time. I saw it in the theater probably 4 or 5 times, it was just incredible. Alex Cox wasn't trying to tell a literal history; it was an almost surrealist, poetic film that was based on the psychology and emotions of their relationship, not the history of the band. The band stuff is just surrounding that and isn't meant to be "biographical". "Sid and Nancy" is not a "bio-pic" and was never intended to be one. I never understand the people who criticize the film as "not being accurate" when that was never Alex Cox's intention in the first place.

@@Stigmatix666 Daniel Day Lewis was originally supposed to play Sid. Oldman said this about the movie " "I wasn't really that interested in Sid Vicious and the punk movement. I'd never followed it. It wasn't something that interested me. The script I felt was banal and 'who cares' and 'why bother' and all of that. And I was a little bit sort-of with my nose in the air and sort-of thinking 'well the theatre - so much more superior' and all of that." He reconsidered based on the salary and the urging of his agent. He lost weight to play the emaciated Vicious by eating nothing but "steamed fish and lots of melon", but was briefly hospitalized when he lost too much. Oldman later dismissed the performance, saying: "I don't think I played Sid Vicious very well" If you have ever seen Alex Cox's movies they are not known for their acting. Go watch Straight to Hell which stars Joe Strummer and Courtney Love, the Pogues act in it. Cox's best movie by far is Repo Man with Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton.

The stupidest thing in this film is Sid's swastika t-shirt was replaced with hammer & sickle. I presume it was done to cater to American audience. @@howey935 I think the cat was that cat but they skipped out on that scene. Probably would have been too disturbing but I think it was mainly for the sake of the narrative. The movie hints that there's a possibility Sid didn't kill Nancy but there's still a chance. The real Sid sounds like he was trying too hard to come off as tough and badass, and all scary, picked on people and animals he knew he could harm. I'm sure that poor kitten (I heard it was a young kitten) wasn't the only animal he killed. They try to portray this in the movie. He was really pathetic and weak, naïve and easily manipulated. People can say what they want, but Gary Oldman made this movie in a lot of ways. I like Sid Vicious and although some say Gary Oldman may have not portrayed his exact personality, I believe not many people could have got closer. Sid was an extremely hard character to portray. I do wish that the film would have been more about Sid then Sid and Nancy in a way , because I believe Sid was more himself without Nancy. Personally I didnt like the real life Nancy. I felt like all she cared about was dating a star and drugs. I believe there was more to Sid Vicious, much more that he never got to say out loud. I think he was a just a kid trying to find a way to live through the punk scene. I like punks. Sid Vicious is my favorite, although I really like Adam Ant as well. But Gary did the best he could as far as the script he had to work with. He did dedicate, losing weight, talking and other things to achieve the outer portrayal of Sid. I think the problem isnt the actors, but the fact that everyone only cared about the star Sid Vicious and not the real boy behind the star. Now if they had made a movie about that perhaps people would have a different opinion. Otherwise, Gary Oldman is a terrific actor and Sid Vicious was more than what a lot of you say. He wasn't just a junkie or dummy. He just wasn't given a chance. That's all I have to say, if anyone wants to argue, it's pointless, Say what you will, but please leave me out of it, this is just my opinion.

The combination of music and paradigm is extremely powerful in this movie, for me at least.

Oldman said this about the movie , his performance as Sid " "I wasn't really that interested in Sid Vicious and the punk movement. Oldman later dismissed the performance, saying: "I don't think I played Sid Vicious very well"

I remember reading in my small college town, one of the newspapers doing a paragraph in the middle of the newspaper about Sid Vicious killing Nancy Spungeon. I had no idea who the heck any of those people were, but, I wouldn't have known because I don't like that kind of music. A few of the people I went to college with did, not very many, but, a few, and I remember going to school and everyone was talking about it, whether they liked the music or not, for a few days, and then, it was all forgotten. Years later, I read the book Nancy's mom wrote. I felt sorry for Nancy, but, I don't think I liked her. I really felt sorry for her parents and her family. They got all sorts of grief from people calling her daughter ugly names.

The film is at its best in the private interactions between Sid and Nancy and in those Gary Oldman is great. These are the parts of the film where poetic licence has to be used.

Wow in Dallas they didn't even have Sid on the right side of the stage like he always was. I really didn't think Gary Oldman was a good Sid, even though he's an amazing actor!!

Watching these clips I want to say that Chloe Webb was brilliant. Gary Oldman is just an acting god as always, but my issue is with Andrew Schofield who just looked utterly bored throughout - nothing behind the eyes. Lydon gave off the boredom thing too but it was always heavily laced with disdain and utter contempt. You could also tell that the wheels were turning in his head, constantly taking his surrounding in and judging everything. ETA: Such a short and heartbreaking life, he wasn't a great or even good musician but Sid Vicious continues to live on. Something about him was larger than life and I still haven't quite worked out what or why that is.

you know there's a lot of problems with this film when you compare the actors to the real people aside from Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb, but it's a very well made film and before KZbin back in the 80s; this was one of the very few sources of any information about the Sex Pistols for someone growing up in Middle America or elsewhere that wasn't London. that's just my opinion. Maybe my opinion sucks but I used to watch this film quite a bit. I think John Lydon was horribly portrayed but his character wasn't so important in this film. It's a film essentially about Sid and Nancy. now before I catch a lot of crap, if I would have made the film, I would have researched all the characters and tried to get them all right. what really makes this film suck is that they are so badly portrayed. But if you get past all that and you want to know what happened to Sid and Nancy, it's a pretty brilliant film. anyway the shot of Anarchy in the UK looks like the studio filming rather than the actual boat filming? No big deal but I believe there is footage of the actual event that you can compare with the film portrayal of it. Otherwise this is pretty cool and I think you for making it. You definitely have my view

Can't wait to see Danny Boyle's Sex Pistols series, just to think of what he could do with the material seems exciting. This was great for what it was, obviously Oldman's virtuoso performance, but also, as has been said, the poetry employed in portraying the abject misery, with occasional brief flashes of romance or 'love' in Sid and Nancy's crash course.

Chloe is a good actress, but I guess she was told to play Nancy as some sort of bubble headed bimbo. Nancy had a genius IQ and that should have been incorporated in the film. Nancy could control Sid because she was more cunning, more worldly, and 1000 times more intelligent than he was.

Great performance of Gary Oldman in "My Way" version but still , he lacks to be a heroine addict for beign 100% perfect . Real Sid always had the eyes semiclosed cos drugs+alcohol in performances , specially since he reached the popular state . +money = + drugs = death . Still .. Gary Oldman is my preffer actor by far .
