Who else, anywhere on the planet, could pull this off? There is no-one like Peter Hammill.

That's a short live excerpt of Hammill's opera "The Fall of the House of Usher", based on the famous Edgar Allen Poe's book. As a project that began long, long ago in 1973, Hammill only could conclude the first version of the opera in 1991. In it, he composed and performed all the piece - main voice and keyboards - but necessarily having other guest singers who played a very important role as the several characters of Edgar Allen Poe's work. The libretto was written by Hammill's longtime friend Chris Judge Smith, from the very early Van Der Graaf Generator. The whole opera lasts 77 minutes. One year later, in 1992, he performed live the short excerpt on the video above. But he was not satisfied with the first version (released 1991) and years later re-recorded and released the definitive version, counting with the same guest singers but adding layers of guitars to his keyboards, creating an almost "orchestral" impact. So, the definitive "The Fall of the House of Usher" was released in 1999, once again a 77 minutes piece in a deluxe edition CD. Sadly, almost nobody knows the piece, that was Hammill's most ambitious project to date.

Saw Peter play this in London in 92. Potter, Stuart Gordon and David Lord were in the Group, but I think PH did the Usher Suite on his own. "...must just get in Character for this one"... Brought his hands down harder on the Piano than anyone ever has for the final crash finale.Gothic Monstrosity indeed!🎭
