We went to the chess hall of fame, which is across from the St. Louis chess club wheee this was held. My parents payed for me to enter so I could watch one of the rounds. I watched this game happen along with Karjakin vs Caruana's draw 3 feet from the players. It was awesome. Excited to see your analysis!

in 3:14, 13. Qb3was played by Ding, a really strong and brilliant move to be mention was castle(13. O-O), sacrificing the bishop, well, it's not actually a sac, cause you will get the piece back due to tatics, but in the end of the variation, white remains a lot better, for anyone curious about this variation, analize it with an engine or by yourself

what a beautiful discovered check at the end. 'last move' is referred to as a 'spear mate.' when i was = 25 i ran into an old Professor & chess master at a local coffee house. i asked him for a game. he said: 'yeah, i can spare 10 minutes.' i defeated him by playing this exact mate; the 'spearing mate.' similar to a 'smothered mate.' that was a good day.

Qd1 Qh5 perpetual. If you try to escape that by playing Kg3, f4 check will open up a discovered attack on undefended white queen. After Kxf4 Qxe5, Kxe5 there's no way for white king to infiltrate the position. It will be a draw.

Hello fellow humans, Leela would like to add the best missed win during this game: At 9:10, the best move for white was actually c4. Your rook is under attack and you cannot play Qb5 anymore, so what are the options? If you'd play -...a5 - Nice counter-attack, but I can just take your knight. (+3,67 - Qxb6 Rxe5, Rf1 Qd7, c5 Rg5, c6 Qd5, g3 Rh5, c8=Q...) -...Rd7 - I can just play h3 and play this out, the other c-pawn is coming (+3,83 - h3 f6, c5 Nc8, Bd6 e5, Bq7 Qd2, Rf1 Nxd6...) -...Rxe5 - ...and you are just down the exchange after Rxe5 Qd7, after which I eventually push my other c-pawn... (+4,49 - Re1 Qxc7, c5 Nd5, Qc4 Qc6, Ra1 g5, g3 h5...) Have a wonderful day, Leela (All searches are done to 4.0M nodes with the 42850 network, no TB)

I can't see moves, so can someone explain why at 11:02, the winning move couldn't also be to queen the pawn? Rook can't immediately capture, because of the mate potential at G7. I know that MC's queen can harass DL's king a bit (H5 > D1 > H5, etc.), but I think it's all a waste of time and either the king walks up near his queen at E5 or there is a queen exchange at some point ... leaving DL with a Queen-Rook against MC's Rook. This would also offer an improvement to Agad's oft quoted phrase -- my favorite endgame is the one where I have a *queen* and my opponent does not.
@67L48

Maybe the pawn on F5 prevents the escape and it's a perpetual check. QD1, KH2, QH5, KG3, QG4, KH2, QH5, and so on.

what i found at 11:07 is this. pawn is pushed and promoted to queen; followed by Qxg2 if black does not defend g2 square. if black does, then take the rook with the newly promoted queen. it is either checkmate or two queens and a rook vs a queen. thoughts?
@VR471
@VR471 5 жыл бұрын
Do you know what? Black DOES NOT have to defend g7(Its not g2 like you said, it's g7). What most of us overlook is that our opponent may have other useful moves than the one we expect him to play. In this case, Carlsen has Qd1+, Kh2.... and Qh5+!!! Draw by repetition. I'm not going to tell you what happens if king moves to g3 after Qh5+ because it's so obvious.
@W4rfire
@W4rfire 5 жыл бұрын
And one more questions for 11:21: simplay playing c8=Q is wrong because of of repeated moves after Qd1+, Kh2, Qh5+ and so on, right? Because otherwise I can see no way out for black here, or do I miss something? Rxc8 would lead to Qxg7#

11:10 isn’t it possible to just go c8=Q as in if the rook captures c8 then checkmate On g7 and if any other move Qxc8 I cant see anything else but it looks promising

11:13 when i paused the video i thougt that pushing the pawn will win the game either you capturer on c8. and getting checkmattet on g7. Because the rook is covering the g7 square and the queen is eying it. and therefore will there be checkmate.? #Agadmatorresponse

Why would black capture? Qd1+ and it's either a draw by repetition or mate in 2 with both of white's queens taking the role of silent spectators.

11:10 what's wrong with make a queen first?The rook can't capture because there's a mate in 1 in next move and it's queen g7 so for example the black moves his queen to g6 to help to the defense but the queen you just make will capture the rook so it's two queen and a rook againts one queen so it's too much in material.

11:17 does c8 work? it seems like black is getting mated after that very soon. Did I miss something? Blacks King can't escape to g6 because Rxg6 will be mate and if black captures the queen on c8 than Qxg7 is mate.
