The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

You don't understand. It's ridiculously difficult to focus when you are suddenly in a different time zone with jet lag and hardly enough sleep. Ding arrived very late and without even a second. He got no time to prepare because he was busy qualifying when everyone else was preparing.. I hope Magnus refuses to play only because it would give Ding a shot.. he's one of the most deserving candidates as of now. 😉

This is by far the most motivational Candidates in recent time. Come on, Ding couldn’t play necessary matches to qualify for candidates, he had to play at 4 in morning, and hikaru proved that he is not only fast but also furious. Also not to mention, Ding is without any second or team to prepare. Nepo is on fire of revenge. so many storylines!!! It was a roller coaster.

Yeah kinda a happy ending. Nepo got his redemption arc, hopefully the next WCC won't be as bad even if he loses. Ding proved that he is still a beast and a worthy challenger after the last minute inclusion controversy and a bad start. Hikaru proved to the chess world that he is also still a beast, a streamerman that won Grand Prix and 3rd at candidates. It's kinda sad for Fabi. But he seems to lost interest in the tournament after the fact that it's almost impossible to be 1st. He seems doesn't care about being 2nd.

1. What is so good with 36. Rb7? Keeping the rook on the 7th rank without potentially being harassed by the knight? 2. What is Nakamura's take on the Berlin draw now?

@8:10 "the Knight would have to move" the only square the Knight could move to would be a5, and then after ...Rxa3 White would be able to capture on a6, as that pawn would not be defended by the Rook on a3.

It’s interesting that Hikaru has seemed nearly unstoppable when playing aggressively and playing to win, and yet when he plays to draw he loses. Moral of the story play to win knowing that falling back on a draw is possible.

I really hope Ding wins the battle for the title of World Chess Champion against either Nepo, or even Magnus, because, although I believe Ding would have a hard time with Magnus, I do think that he has a good chance of winning against Nepo. Only thing that really screwed him over in this tournament was the defeat against Radjabov, but then again, a 15 year old Radjabov defeated Garry Kasparov and ended his long wing streak.

at the 15:08 mark when Hikaru plays Bc1, why not just a5? not winning but I think it complicates the position more. I don't have a chess engine. Would be interesting to see

Thank you for increasing my vast knowledge about Lasker. Wonder how Hikaru feels about that decision to collude with Nepo for a draw now. Such things are bad for chess, and though I initially wanted him to win, I am glad it bit him in the end.

That draw was changing nothing in terms of mathematical chances. That was bad from Naka, he forced it and Nepo agreed in order not to have worse position, but logically it changed nothing.

at 12:31 if you take the pawn on e4 with the rook then you have f3 attacking rook and knight, but what am I missing after Ne3+ so white has to move the king and the rook can move to let say back to e8?

What distinguishes semi-Slav from full Slav? Is it capture on the d5 square by the N on f6 rather than by the P on e6?

You cant play f3 to after rxe4 because of ne3x, its the same variation. You have to play kf3

Yeah what a close call. WOOHOO!!! GOD JOB DING LIREN ON BEATING HIKARU NAKAMURA!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HIKARU SURE GAVE US QUITE A SCARE!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA #9LX #saynoto2900 (It's a long story the hashtags are related to this.) (Ok I'll tell you the story. Magnus Carlsen is Wesley So's enemy re #9LX . Sergey Karjakin is Magnus' enemy re #saynoto2900 and Daniil Dubov the TRAITOR. So, I support Sergey since I support Wesley. Hikaru Nakamura is Sergey's enemy re FIDE's choosing Daniil and Hikaru over Andrey Esipenko. So, I'm against Hikaru. Lol.)
